MLK’s Youngest Son Calls His Siblings’ Lawsuit Ludicrous
July 14th, 2008He said he was stunned that his sister and brother were taking him to court

(L-to-R: Dexter, Bernice, Martin Luther King III)
The youngest son of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said Saturday that he was “blindsided” by the lawsuit filed by his brother and sister, accusing him of pocketing money from his parents’ estate. “It totally blindsided me,” Dexter Scott King told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution of the suit filed against him by Martin Luther King III and Bernice King. “I think maybe it was a reckless attempt to express their grievances. They are false claims, and I will be addressing that accordingly.” Specifically, the lawsuit, filed in Atlanta on Thursday, accuses Dexter of mishandling funds from King Inc., hiding documents from his siblings and taking money out of the Coretta Scott King estate. At the center of the controversy are millions in King family assets, including some $32 million in contributions from the city of Atlanta to acquire 10,000 pages of Martin Luther King’s writings and other documents. It’s not the first time that the children of the slain civil rights leader and the late Coretta Scott King have been at odds regarding the King Center in Atlanta and the handling of their parents’ estate and legacies. Dexter and Bernice, who sit on the board of the King Center, say they want Dexter, who is President of King Inc., to convene the board. “He owes Martin and Bernice an accounting of what has happened with all of the money,” said Jock Smith, the attorney representing Martin III and Bernice. “We’re trying to get an accounting as to the financing and well-being of the estate. The way to do that is to get records, books and accounting.” Said Dexter, speaking to the Journal-Constitution from his home in the Los Angeles community of Malibu, “We are private family. It is a private business matter, you know, a family dispute, if you will. It’s probably blown out of proportion, but until I’ve had a chance to thoroughly review the complaint, it’s just kind of difficult for me to address it.”

i understand wanting to hold peo[ple accountable no matter who it is but this is a little to much but it all goes to show that dissention will show it’s head in the best of us i wish them the best and it will all work aout money is still the root of all evil
Sad…Sad…Sad
As far as I can determine from what I just read, Dexter is evading his siblings from a business-minded standpoint. 1. They are not a private family (anymore); 2. It is not a private family matter. The King estate was contributed to by the public, and from a business standpoint; as requested by Berneice and Martin III, a proper accounting should be presented. Dexter’s comments are unacceptable; and, this matter would not have become public had he kindly done the right thing from jump; and, responded when his siblings requested the information from him. With him holding position as President of the Corp. managing the estate, he has no right to with-hold meetings, nor information being requested-especially of a monetary nature. And, even at this point to pretend that he has no knowledge of what they are talking about is what is ludicrous. Before any lawsuit is filed, the plaintiffs must have a valid charge. The defendent knew prior to the filing of such suit that things had gotten to this point. This is not new to Dexter. He is playing them, and think he is now playing the public; but, I am seeing straight through this. It has become a game, and Dexter is the one playing it. I am not blind to it. Common sense is common sense, and business is business. He need to conduct himself as a decent business man. I have highly respected the King family all of my life, and still do; but, I will not make excuses for anyone. It is what it is.

If we all take time and reflect back to the old testament scriptures, there were several prophets that were chosen by God to lead and be examples to His people. A lot of their children did not follow the ways of God nor their father’s legacy. This same scenario has been happening for centuries. Let us not discredit the sacrifice Dr. King made by discrediting his children. I’m truly sorry to hear that life has brought them to this place and time, but I also pray that they will reflect back, reconcile through prayer together then move to a positive place in their lives. I think all of us that experience the Civil Rights movement and grew along with the King children felt at some point they would inherit the same fortitude and courage their Father had. However, this hasn’t happen yet and maybe it’s not meant to be. As Black Americans, we are in a very sensitive place in history right now and all of us must realize the the enemy is just trying to bring all of us down. I just hope the King children realize that no one can take their Dad’s place, he has done what he was sent to do. Let’s all pray for the King Family through this challenge.
You ppl should be ashamed of yourselves (MLK Children). Has your father taught you nothing ???? If you guys have any ounce of your father left in you, than court will be the last result. You guys are family. How can you get the Justice system involved ?
Greedy Bastards….. God should take all yuor fortune away f you don’t know how to deal with it now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You greedy Bastards…. God should punish all of you by taking the whole fortune away… and guess what ??? Once he does you guys will only have eachother left… ever think about that ????
as someone on the outside looking in i say get it together guys many people are watching and holding to your every word…..i realize it’s the principle behind the matter….NOT GREED……bernice as a minister i know you are allowing god to direct u and not human motive u must remember u are the bridge that closes the gap to democracy……so please don’t allow who u are in christ to be determined by this issue…..take care
dexter there is no I in T-E-A-M
STOP IT!!!
THIS IS SHAMEFUL THAT YOU ALL WILL TAKE YOUR BROTHER THRU THIS TYPE OF SITUATION, WHEN YOUR FATHER LIFE WAS TAKEN FOR GREED, COLOR, OPINION ON LIFE, OUT SPOKEN MAN, AND NOW YOU WANT TO PUT HIS NAME TO SHAME BY GOING TO COURT FOR NOTHING THAT WILL MAKE LIGHT OF THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE STANDING, SITTING AROUND WAITING ON THE MOMENT OF DISTRUCTION OF THE KING FAMILY. GET IT TOGETHER AND DO WHATS RIGHT SIT DOWN AND TALK COMMUNICATE GET TO THE BOTTOM OF IT TOGETHER NOT WITH MEDIA ?????
Their parents have got to be turning over in their graves right now over this. But I do know how greed can get when there is money involved. I just hope he did not cheat his siblings out of monies, especially when there is enough for all of them to live comfortably. This is really sad and disgraceful.
the truth is the truth and well-being of the family to live in harmony.
If there are financial issues they need to be addressed. I would prefer that his children resolve this matter as a family. However, the legacies of Dr.
Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King are much larger than their immediate family. Many of us have contributed funding, time and other resources to help fulfill their dream. I enourage these young people to stay focused and maintain the strong character traits instilled in them by their parents.
nothing new here pk’s have always found a way to stand out …. usually it is negative … pray for them
i don’t think the kings were rich or that well off (middle class) to say the money that is being fought over is funded by donations etc. they should have let the state or gov run the king center years ago etc any. its not even that nice anymore…. national historic wanted assist with that facility but they rejected that years ago the place if rough looking they need to worry about that!
A father asked his 3 sons to each go and bring him a strong twig. Each son brought back a twig. The father tied the twigs together tightly and gave each son a chance to break it. Neither son could break the twigs. He took the bundle and gave then each a twig and asked them to try to break the single twig. Each son broke his twig easily. The father then said, “You are like these twigs, together you will be difficult to break but alone it will be easy to break you.” I am sure that Martin and Coretta is disappointed that their children are broken twigs.
guest what, its gone. you had your chance to expand the legacies. hope you have your own thing going on that will be prosperous for you. we all have a gift, what is yours. God, gave you something too, what is it, ask God.
then and only then will you know if running your parents legacies is what you are suppose to be doing. what your parents built, is obviously too big for the three of you, you are proving that now. all of you are wrong. this is not the whole story. it go’s alot deeper than this, thats clear. you could be fighting God, not each other. it just maybe God taking your hands off. I encourage all of you thats hoping the king siblings would get it together, to ask God if he’ll allow you to have it, he’ll lead you, its up for grabs.
guest what king siblings God has something esle for you to do.
LET GO! HOW ABOUT THAT?
I think that a stand had to be taken in keeping the wishes of the mother to be carried out.
Although, it would have been better for them to discuss this issue among themselves and work it out. Aflter all christrian should not take one another to court. Not to mention them being family. Family shoudl be kept together not alllow money or I should say the love of money to be the cause of discord and separation.
City of Atlanta paid $32 Million for the documents. There must have been a shady deal going on there. Why if these are good kids and thought the legacy of this great man was important. They should have donated the writings to the city of Atlata. THey charge for everything even to tour the house in Atlanta. THESE ARE PROFITEERS!. Living on the Beach in Malibu, The apple fell far from the tree.
