MLK’s Youngest Son Calls His Siblings’ Lawsuit Ludicrous
July 14th, 2008He said he was stunned that his sister and brother were taking him to court

(L-to-R: Dexter, Bernice, Martin Luther King III)
The youngest son of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said Saturday that he was “blindsided” by the lawsuit filed by his brother and sister, accusing him of pocketing money from his parents’ estate. “It totally blindsided me,” Dexter Scott King told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution of the suit filed against him by Martin Luther King III and Bernice King. “I think maybe it was a reckless attempt to express their grievances. They are false claims, and I will be addressing that accordingly.” Specifically, the lawsuit, filed in Atlanta on Thursday, accuses Dexter of mishandling funds from King Inc., hiding documents from his siblings and taking money out of the Coretta Scott King estate. At the center of the controversy are millions in King family assets, including some $32 million in contributions from the city of Atlanta to acquire 10,000 pages of Martin Luther King’s writings and other documents. It’s not the first time that the children of the slain civil rights leader and the late Coretta Scott King have been at odds regarding the King Center in Atlanta and the handling of their parents’ estate and legacies. Dexter and Bernice, who sit on the board of the King Center, say they want Dexter, who is President of King Inc., to convene the board. “He owes Martin and Bernice an accounting of what has happened with all of the money,” said Jock Smith, the attorney representing Martin III and Bernice. “We’re trying to get an accounting as to the financing and well-being of the estate. The way to do that is to get records, books and accounting.” Said Dexter, speaking to the Journal-Constitution from his home in the Los Angeles community of Malibu, “We are private family. It is a private business matter, you know, a family dispute, if you will. It’s probably blown out of proportion, but until I’ve had a chance to thoroughly review the complaint, it’s just kind of difficult for me to address it.”

Its too bad if true. Just because your family doesn’t mean people do the right thing. Me and My sisters have spent 20k fighting my aunt after she stole my disabled moms home and misused her pension etc. This is very common.
The King family is not that their cracked up to be. Everyone has faults. I don’t know if they are all that.
It is a sad day when the Legacies of Dr. and Mrs. King are tarnished. This is not what they wanted. Why has it come to this? MONEY? Over integrity. I just don’t get it. And this family cannot lead the rest of us in their Father’s Legacy if they can’t even deal with one another. This whole situation is so sad. I will be praying for them and hope that this situation is resolved soon and they get back to the business of taking care of what their parent’s fought so hard to achieve for the betterment of Black America.
we have been in battle with a relative that sold my moms house to herself and misused her pension etc. Mom is totally disabled and yes it was her sister. This is very commom in our society, misuse of other peoples funds. Greed, Stupidity, I don’t know what you call it. Were 20k in dept with legal fees fighting this stuff. Family can take you down.
I fell that when you have issue that you should deal with it behind close doors not in public for everyone to see.
As a family member of the King Family. I hate to see them fighting like this because if there mother and sister were alive this would be going on. At this point I see the family split and I dont like it at all. Hopefully all this can be straighten out because this is not the way cousin Coretta would want them to act.
I can’t see myself fighting with my brother and sisters over any money matters regarding my parents should they pass.None of them represent the legacy and heritage of their mother or their father.
Hey Annette, Thanks for clearing that up about Money. I was getting ready to correct it before I read your comment. Yes, the bible quotes ” the LOVE of money is the root of evil. We need monies to make things happen, but it saddens me that these sibling are fuding over finances. Why didn’t they discuss this among themselves instead of going public? but I’m not surprised they are disbuting over it. As a race of people, we have to stop trying to bring one another down. When the Change do come, what are we going to do?
Money is not the root of all evil. The love of it is.
1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
I hate to hear this about any family. This world is not getting better a it seems the words are saying it is. Perhaps the bible is telling us the truth when it speaks about this inthe last days.
2 Timothy 3:2
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
2 Timothy 3:3
Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
Timothy 3:4
Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
Timothy 3:5
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away
Annette Colbert Beavers:
You’re correct. It’s the “love of money that is the root of all evil”. Money does not have the capacity to be evil. What people do for money is another matter all together and we all know that some people will do just about anything for money. As for the King family…it sounds like a lack of proper and adequate communication is the culprit here. Back in the day…black folks had too much pride and good sense to air our dirty laundry like this. We have fallen to the level “others” in that manner. This is a private matter and should be handled as such…PRIVATELY!!!
Dr. and Mrs. King would NOT approve!!!
C’mon why are you guys so stunned as if Dexter didn’t know these allegations were coming up against him. I am sure that both Minister Bernice and Martin have tried to contact their brother within all parameters. I am sure without any doubt that they have tried to reason with him and he has refused. We all have been in a situation similar to this one: When you borrow money and cannot pay it back – you ignore the lender- When someone borrows from you and they cannot pay you back- the lender gets screwed around with many excuses from the borrower. So don’t forget the A<B<C sides to this story. Dexter has alienated himself from his family long before his mom took ill. Dexter has been trying to find himself for a very, very long time. Let’s just pray that any further action remain in a private sector. Regardless of their family history and backgrounds these siblings need to become comfortable within themselves.
This goes to show something that I learned over the years growing up remember, “FAMILY MEMBERS ARE PEOPLE TOO” , they will mess over you worse than a friend would. There are friends out there that will treat you better than a family member.
The mighty have fallen.
Felesia in H-Town your comment is soooooooooooo very true. Yes, family members are a trip, and friends-true friends will be there for you more than your family. It ’s sad that the King family has allowed this to happen, but they are human, and not excluded from what has been written in the Bible about the last days.
Mother against daughter,
Father against son
Sister against Brother………
I agree with skipper….seriously.
Its a shame that a family like the King FAMILY is having problems and siblings taking eacho other to court….Money isn’t everything and so not what their parents where about. I’m sure MLK and CSK are so mad right now cus their kids are not representing them well or acting as if they have family values.
It was just a matter of time before one of them would start dipping into that money.
This is awful. What is wrong with the King children? You never hear of fighting between Malcolm X’s children (one of his grandchildren is accused of setting the fire that killed Betty Shabazz), Medgar Ever’s children, the Kennedy’s offspring, or Jesse Jackson’s children. The King children should be working together to continue their parent’s legacy, not fighting. It is sad. Hopefully they can get it together.
I think that they need 2 get past all this quickly. We all have faults and we hold them up to the light of their father and mother as if they were them… sure they are a reflection of them so they have 2 carry themselves in that manner, and try not 2 bring reproach on their parents’ legacy. Fighting over money is very petty given the people involved. However if Dexter has proved himself not to be trustworthy then this should be looked into and addressed, atleast look into the records before it is taken to the courts especially given the alleged amount of money that has gone missing and even more so if he’s pocketing the said money. We also have to think of why he would do this. If he’s struggling financially (which he probably shouldn’t be) then that needs to be looked into as well… why is he struggling? I don’t believe in family taking family to court unless its absolutely necessary.
I always thought that when the oldest daughter died, the family would eventually collapse. Dr. King is in heaven celebrating his dream watching Obama do his thing and then he’s weeping because he’s watching his own children fall apart over money. How bittersweet.
It is the LOVE of money that is the root of evil! Not money…but the LOVE of it. And when you have one person taking control of the money without a board to oversee EVERYTHING, then you have problems. Here the King family have millions of dollars of problems.
