(L-to-R: Dexter, Bernice, Martin Luther King III

The youngest son of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said Saturday that he was “blindsided” by the lawsuit filed by his brother and sister, accusing him of pocketing money from his parents’ estate. “It totally blindsided me,” Dexter Scott King told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution of the suit filed against him by Martin Luther King III and Bernice King. “I think maybe it was a reckless attempt to express their grievances. They are false claims, and I will be addressing that accordingly.” Specifically, the lawsuit, filed in Atlanta on Thursday, accuses Dexter of mishandling funds from King Inc., hiding documents from his siblings and taking money out of the Coretta Scott King estate. At the center of the controversy are millions in King family assets, including some $32 million in contributions from the city of Atlanta to acquire 10,000 pages of Martin Luther King’s writings and other documents. It’s not the first time that the children of the slain civil rights leader and the late Coretta Scott King have been at odds regarding the King Center in Atlanta and the handling of their parents’ estate and legacies. Dexter and Bernice, who sit on the board of the King Center, say they want Dexter, who is President of King Inc., to convene the board. “He owes Martin and Bernice an accounting of what has happened with all of the money,” said Jock Smith, the attorney representing Martin III and Bernice. “We’re trying to get an accounting as to the financing and well-being of the estate. The way to do that is to get records, books and accounting.” Said Dexter, speaking to the Journal-Constitution from his home in the Los Angeles community of Malibu, “We are private family. It is a private business matter, you know, a family dispute, if you will. It’s probably blown out of proportion, but until I’ve had a chance to thoroughly review the complaint, it’s just kind of difficult for me to address it.”

Well yes, this is a private manner. But sometimes if you got family members that JUST WON’T COOPERATE because of their stubbornness, pride, and hard-headedness… you gotta go and get THEM PEOPLE involved. I’m sure Dr. King is looking down, with his chin in his hand with great disappointment. This needs to be fixed and fixed FAST so as to not loose the support of the millions of people who work to keep his center, monument, and dream alive!

This must end and soon. Although they are the children of legends, they too have faults. I hope that the outcome of this lawsuit will not be made public. The findings should only be revealed to the king members. They simply need time to heal. My oh my what a burden they have had to carry. Let’s not ridicule them now. Let’s pray that they arrive to a peaceful resolution that bonds siblings as they very well should be.

With all the love in my heart,
Andrea

Money is not the root of evil……..The LOVE of money is the root of All evil, 1st Timothy 6:10… its the love of it that makes people a little crazy, with the kind of money that family is seeing come through King Inc., what some $32 million, it would be amazing if there was NO problems,…they are no differrent than any one else….. we all can fall to temptation…Pray for them, it is sad and trivial in reflection to Dr., Kings legacey…….I hpe the best for them.

Death with assets left bring out the worst and true nature of some.

It surprises many how far one will go to get ALL or more than the others named in a will.

Where little sister/brother was the caring one~~becomes the ruthless, underminding, cut throat who schemes his/her way to suck the life out of their family for a few pieces of silver.

Many families have been torn apart due to the greed of one or more heirs. There is no misunderstanding of the facts, if they are clearly laid out on the table with questions answers accurately and quickly.

As with any family…..I hope this one gets it together….for each of their sakes.

The issue here is not about “the Love of money is the root of all evil” or “Money is the root of all evil”; the issue is the disparity over money among the MLK siblings. It doesn’t matter how you say the phrase, the problem is over money. As I have read through the comments, I see comments about a phrase and how it was stated when the subject is infighting among the children of a Black-American icon who is a part of our Black history and how the children of this icon is soiling the legacy.
Come on folks, lets stick to the subject here.

Dr. King and the Mrs. are turning over in their graves by this outrageous lawsuit.

This situation is a shameful one. In one of the many speeches made by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he asked that we be judged not by the color of our skin but by the content of our character. If Dexter is stealing money, this proves to be a flaw in his character and should be dealt with accordingly – use all available resources within the organization to investigate the accusation rather than bringing it to an outside mediator and/or reposition him within the organization to limit or revoke his accessibility to these funds. There may very well have been misuse of funds, but to bring a lawsuit against your own family member over money is petty and vindictive in my opinion. Everyone has a weakness of some sort and his may be money. As stated by a few others, “Love of Money is the Root to All Evil” and this is proven every day in countless ways. The King family is not immune.

This is only a test rendered by mans greed and perpetuated by mans desire for revenge. If these weaknesses are permitted into their decisions, the true cause of the circumstances will be over looked, twisted and mutilated rendering a reasonable and appropriate course of action imperceptible.

I sincerely hope for the best for them all.

I have wondered where Dexter has been for the past 2 or 3 annual King Celebrations. I thought it odd he has not appeared with the family other than at Yogi’s funeral (I remember wondering if he’d show then)…

Dexter is a young black man who had expansive ideas about ‘updating the legacy’…He moved to California to the land of ’sharks’ and has likely been taken in by some (or one) of them….Nevertheless, I’m sure Martin and Bernice have tried to speak with him and get an ‘update’…He’s obviously missing more than the annual celebrations and unfortunately when it comes to BUSINESS we have to ‘take care of it’ – no matter what your name….

We can often get soooo emotional about business but there is a time for emotion and there is a time for Business – it’s time for Dexter to explain his ‘bizness’…..word.

Jealousy can be deep among siblings, even as adults. They may be at odds with each other since they have lost both thier parents and a sister,Yyolanda King. They need to be advised about the God kind of Love especially since something like a lawsuit could make things get ugly and, well you know, God don’t like ugly. Berniece and Martin didn’t have their parents to get counciled into the proper approach as a family, therefore it seems that they have blindsighted the youngest brother, Dexter with a lawsuit. Let us pray that they come through this without a lot of strife, anger and division. They were not as powerful as their parents, but some still considered them as role models due to legacy of their father’s destiny. May God Bless the King family for strength and endurance. In His Love, Minister Moseley.

Too many people on here are speaking as though they actually know these people personally. We don’t really know what is going on behind closed doors on wither side. Everything is just speculation after we read news articles. And if any of you do know them personally…you need to be speaking with them not blogging about their business on BET. What kind of friend blogs about a friend.

My prayers are with the entire King family! Remember this, your parents (who made great sacrifices for America) gave the entire world hope; you owe them the respect of just getting along! Please, do not allow the great King legacy end with this generation (his children). If you do not shine your lights on the world, the Creator may raise up another family to do so. We love you all!

I think this is a shame! Until now – I have never heard of the King children/family in any kind of controversy – I think brother Martin & Sister Coretta must be turning over in their graves.

What a terrible shame this is!

Dr. King and Mrs. King were dedicated to improve the lives of every American. They dedicated their lives to fighting for the rights of every one who was being mistreated. The civil rights movement was not about Black America, it was about ensuring that the words of the Constitution held true, that all men and women would be treated equally. Unfortunately, in America being treated as an equal does not mean that one will be treated fairly. Dr. King and Mrs. King wanted to help better the lives of anyone who was being discriminated against. Discrimination, be it based on gender, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, religion, disability, is what they dedicated their lives to abolishing from the American culture. Dr. King’s legacy is that he believed that one day there would be no White America and Black America but that instead there would be one America where all of the people who inhabited it would be seen as solely American without the hyphens that keep our country separated. It is sad that his children are squabbling over money associated with their parents’ estates. They should be working together, alongside one another to preserve their parents’ legacies. They should be helping one another to heal and find peace. I pray that they find within themselves and with each other the strength and courage to strike down the evil that consumes one when they love money, when they fall in love with money. They should love one another as God loves them. When they do they can move forward and use the money from their parents’ estates to continue working in their names to unite Americans. Their father had a dream that their mother worked tirelessy to help become a reality after his death. She did so because she did not want his passing to be in vain, to be for not. She knew that the best way to honor his life was to continue his work. Though she grieved the loss of her husband, her life partner, she never forgot what he meant to her and the country. Their children need to come together to honor what their parents stood for and how their passing affected an entire nation. Love, integrity, acceptance, honesty, strength, compassion. Their parents were an inspiration to us all and they are disgracing their memories. If Bernice and MLK III suspect or believe that Dexter was/is misappropriating funds from the Mrs. King’s estate and King, Inc. then they should have spoken with him privately and worked to find a solution to the problem instead of suing him. Money should never divide siblings, especially these brothers and this sister. Their parents valued family, faith, and fairness. I pray that God helps them to remember from where they came!!
