MLK’s Youngest Son Wants To Restore His ‘Good Name’

Dexter King, the youngest son of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., says he is angry about the way his siblings have “maligned” him in a recent lawsuit claiming that he pilfered funds from his mother’s estate, and he wants to restore his “good name. They [claim] that they’re being injured,” King told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But the money’s in their bank account. If you think you’re being injured, go get the money out of your bank account. I don’t mean to be flip about it, but it’s so ridiculous. I’m still reeling over the ridiculousness of it, the recklessness of it.” The Journal-Constitution said that King provided bank statements and other documents Dexter said proved that his siblings, Martin Luther King III and Bernice King, has been benefiting as much from their late parents’ estate as he has. Thus, Dexter told the newspaper, the elements of their lawsuit – which accuses him of taking money from Coretta Scott King’s estate for personal use and mishandling estate funds – are patently false. Dexter is president and CEO of King Inc., which controls the intellectual property rights of Dr. King’s papers. “I believe that it’s important to set the record straight, and at this point I can only think about clearing my good name,” Dexter said. “Frankly, I’m very angry in the way they’ve maligned and damaged me. “You can call me a lot of things, but I am not a thief.” According to the Journal-Constitution, the bank statements Dexter provided show that King Inc. made the following disbursements to the Martin III, Bernice and Dexter: $477,772.15 was transferred to Bernice King; another $377,772.15 went to the account of Martin III — $100,000 less because, according to a separate document, he had borrowed that amount from King Inc. a month earlier; a third distribution of $477,722.15 went to Dexter King. “Whenever there’s a distribution it has to be equal — that’s what really counts, and that’s what happened,” Dexter King said. Jock Smith, the attorney for Bernice and Martin III, said the controversy erupted because Dexter King has refused to call a meeting of King Inc. in at least four years. “It has been years since there has been a meeting,” Smith said. “No information has been provided to Bernice and Martin, so you must begin to wonder what is happening with the corporation,” Smith said. “How are they to know what he is doing? And what they know he is doing is not good. If he would spend time talking to his brother and sister, instead of the press, progress would be made.”
Dr. King’s Dream Speech did not say anything about , “After I die my children will fall apart. Dr. MLK dream was about juding the content of one’s character and not the color of one’s skin. Are the King’s sibling replaying their father’s speech, “I have a Dream” and listening to it? I did not volunteer to become a parade marshall to escort the King relatives and other officals during the last MLK King March in Atlanta, Ga that Mrs. Correta Scott King lived to see. I put away my fears of being shot or targeted on that day, and my pride for peace among all mankind gave me strength to walk with pride down the streets and monitoring the rope that separated viewers from the King Family on that day. The year when Dr. King and John F. Kennedy were in political leadership for the improvement beliefs of America, was the very same year I was born. King siblings, after you all split the spoils and make peace with everyone, what are you going to do about Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” -future vision? We the people of the United States of America should take all three of you to the alter court for breach of a legal Will.es, I said it, because Dr. King made it loud and clear that “I have a dream”, and right now you all are not fulfilling his request in his Will(a legal document – his writings- his papers – God’s mission – prophecy – hint: a spiritual message with a reality foundation). Get it together and put away the cookies and milk. We need you three to get with the program or pass the torch to your own children or cousins. Now, which one of you are planning on being the true leader no matter what. Did you let your Father die in vain? Are you sending a tornado storm to America’s People? I am sick and tired of being sick and tired of reading about problems that creates more problems and no solutions to solve them. Are you encouraging a Willie Lynch Papers episode for a movie, “The Fall of the King Descendants”, I don’t think Oprah Winfrey would want to touch your story. Yes, each King family member has a legal right to their parents’ estate, but what are you going to do with the King Center that is in need of great repair and support? If Dr. King knew what you all were fighting about if he coule, he would probably turn over in his grave and vomit. Because this makes me even sick to my stomach to read about. It would be nice if the three of you would apologize first to each other, then American school children, and to the general public. I am concerned about your future Dexter. At least you want to do the right thing, clear your good name, now what about clearing your Father’s Oustanding name, what about you King III, and what do you have to say about yourself Lady Bernice, it appears you are suppose to be closer to God than the other siblings? Make peace with each other and move on quickly. Rev Jessie Jackson did it, and many other American Leaders. I forgive you all for the reported mess. Therefore, please, please don’t break the American pride and the International respect that people around the world have foryour father, the Rev. Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. and you all as siblings. My prayers are with you Dexter and your siblings. In Jesus Name, settle your differences and get on with protecting and living your father’s dream. Because we do not want the next generations of black, white, brown, yellow , or even orange/tan children to experience another nightmare in history. We still love you all, but take care of your business and stay focused. Smile. Keep the Dream Alive.

It is obvious that the Atlanta siblings want to protect their estate and keep up with their brother. There is an old saying that you should keep your friends close and your enemies closer. It is obvious that the out of sight, out of mind days that existed between the King siblings have ended. It has become easier to sue in order to say hello and to communicate with each other. I hope that these legacy children take the high road and hug each other on TV or do a press conference to save the entire King Family name, because it is truly being tarnished right now. Yes, families argue, but the King family rarely acts this way as the ultimate black family role models.
Love Conquer all. Loving each other strengten the family ties! A family that prays together stays together. God must be in the mist! Keep your thoughts on Jesus and he will bring peace. Money is the last thing you need to be disagreeing on because you can loose instantly, love last for ever.
Dexter, you are wrong, wrong, wrong. this lawsuit would not happen if you met with your sister and brother and show them what was going on. why would that be a problem unless you are hiding something. i am sure your siblings tried to get this settled without a lawsuit and all the publicity that followed.
Ok Children, now as a personal friend of your Pop’s and Mom’s, i’d like you kids to kiss and make up, and the next time anything like this happens, everyone will personally get a ‘Time Out’, until you learn to share and behave yourselves!! Let’s move on foward now!!

I truly believe that this matter should have been resolved within the family rather than letting this hit news. Many people have their opinions and believe that this family would not suffer any errors. but the truth is that we all suffer errors in our life. Their simple error was a lack of communication on both sides. These siblings should just pull together and resolve this matter. We who have siblings know that this is nothing strange to families. We disagree, but the key is resolving the disagreement. This family was built love through my history teachings of this family. So love will conquer all and love will help them to overcome this situation. So to all who are leaving negative comments about Dexter, Bernice, and Martin III, stop it because their human just like any of us and they are subject to lifes error, this such being Lack of Communication. God Bless the Kings and remember to LOVE!!!

Wow! That’s a lot of money to be given out. Well they just need to resolve this matter and start having those meetings again. Gosh, they should have never brought this drama on the King name.

unbelievable, yet, believable. Truly sad. Last I heard about fiiiiiine Dex, he was in LA trying to get an acting career going. It must be very, very hard to be the children of the King Legacy. But, not impossible. They each need to find their part of their parents lives and what they stood for and implement it in their own lives to carry Martin and Coretta’s lives on!

This is too sad. I didn’t even want to come here and read it. And at the same time, I can sympathize with how things get torn apart when the parents are gone. Good luck to all 3 of them. If they want reconciliation, do it. But whatever happens, DO NOT INJURE YOUR PARENTS LEGACY. THAT WOULD BE MOST TRAGIC!

God sets high and sees low. It is terrible that something like this is taking place among Dr. Martin Luther King Sr’s children. I believe he and Mrs. Coretta Scott King are turning over in their graves knowing that their children are in this ball of confusion. These are demonic spirits trying to attack them because our God is not an author of confustion, but an author of peace.
They need to pray together and rebuke that demonic spirit coming against them in Jesus’ Name. A family that prays together stays together…then “no weapon formed against them, shall prosper.” Need I say more…
