MLK’s kids continue to battle.
The very public legal squabble among Dr. Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King’s three surviving children stands to scuttle a $1.4 million book deal. For the past several months, the King kids – Bernice and Martin Luther King III on one side and Dexter King on the other – have been battling in court over their parents’ estates. Martin and Bernice have filed lawsuits arguing that Dexter, who is president and chief executive officer of the estate, King, Inc., has mismanaged money from the estate and even tapped funding without authorization. Dexter has produced documentation he says proves that he has made no unauthorized withdrawals and that his siblings have gotten equal periodic allocations. In the latest incident, Penguin Group, the New York-based publisher, agreed to pay $1.2 million to King Inc., and another $200,000 to the Rev. Barbara Reynolds, who taped conversations with Coretta King before her death in January 2006. Now, Penguin has threatened to kill the contract and is demanding that the estate return a $300,000 advance unless it receives photos, personal writings and letters within seven business days. While Dexter signed the agreement with Penguin, the siblings are arguing over which documents and photos should go to the publisher. They also say that their mother no longer wanted to work with Reynolds, who was a longtime journalist before going into the ministry. Representatives for Dexter King say that he was well within his power to execute the contract and that he discussed the deal with his brother and sister before signing it. “He signed the contract, but that’s his job,” Craig Frankel, Dexter’s personal attorney, said. “No one questioned when they got their share of the sale from the King papers whether Dexter had the authority to sign a contract. Nobody complained when they got their millions.” But Jock Smith, an attorney for Bernice and Martin Luther King III, said they knew nothing of the book deal until they were asked to turn over the documents a few weeks ago. “This basically comes down to a situation where Dexter has done things on his own,” Smith said.
You know its a dang shame how money destroys everything in its presence!! The more money at state the more bull that comes behind it!! Now these siblings should be ashame of themselves considering what they’re father lived and died for!!! I must believe that Dr. King and Coretta are turning over in their graves!! HELP US LORD…SAVE US FROM OUR GREED AND SELF CENTERED ATTITUDES!!
I am sure that there are millions involved, but how many millions does one need? It is a pity that the lure of money turns even the children of a great man and woman into greedy, self centered scroundrels. Now they are in the courts where only the lawyers stand to win. Win what? Part of the millions that the children are fighting over. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME……ON ALL OF THEM!!!
What a shame! Dr. King & his wife fought for peace and justice in this world for all people! Yet, his children are squabbling over the estate! I’m sure they (Dr. & Mrs. King) would not at all be happy! This one family who you would think, would have it together. Where’s the peace?!?!
ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS……………I AM ASHAME OF THEM DISGRACING THEIR MOTHER AND FATHER NAME, GROWN ADULTS…GREED IS A POWERFUL THING……GOD COULD FIX THAT ….;WHERE THEY COULD END UP WITH NOTHING….

spilt it up amongst you …your father fought for freedom, equality and peace and look at their seeds fighting oveer who gets dollars..if anything, it shouldnt even go to you unless you’re actively continuing your fathers work…acting like yall truly deserve it..
Now I know that the Rev. Dr. Martin L. King and Coretta Scott King ARE TURNING OVER IN THEIR GRAVES RIGHT NOW! If she was still alive, none of this would have taken place. They should be able to dispute all this matter with each other as siblings and not let the “white man” determine what they should get or not. They are siblings, and they should all be incorporated in what’s going on in the King’s, Inc. and estate and everything else. This is a darn shame, real talk.
Martin,Bernice and Dexter I pray god lifts his three siblings up to another spiritual level of peace.I pray you children of god rebuke the enemy off your relationship as family.I pray god uncovers the true enemy to you.It is not your sibiling.Most of us cannot imagine the pressurized lives you three have faced.The good of it and the duress of a public life.I plead with you siblings in jesus name, do not let the flesh world use you like this.In life most of us have been dupped by our flesh desires and how the world does it.We look to you to show us the way.Our world has not had a leader to come close to what your dad gave us.As siblings you have more financially than most of us can dream of.Money cannot buy back lost loved ones.Please King siblings do not let the world use you like this.You can live well and prosperous with what you have.Please do not let your fathers legacy go down with this world pitting his children at each other.This shows you did not inherit what you need to stop this distruction of your mother and fathers legacy.We love all three of Martin and Coretta’s babies.God please end this sibling rilvary for the King family.AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Separation of a family by greed (money). Its a shame that a family raised like they were are being separated by money. Their parents are not happy right now with the way they are handling things.
Now you know that is really a shame. Has anyone looked at the bigger picture. I am sure your parents did not sacrifice their lives for their children to be arguing and fussing like strangers. It is really a disgrace. As someone stated earlier the only people that will win is the lawyers because the money they are paying them could be used to future the cause that their parents lived and died trying to change or put it back into the community or a scholarship fund for some young man/woman who is not able to finance a college education can have a chance at the dream their father spoke about on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. I know Bernice is a minister and attends church but how about the brothers. There are only three of you left, does God have to touch another sibling for you all to stop this mess.

Poor MLK (may he R>I>P>) the bad part about this situation is the only time we hear anything about his children is when they’re batlling over HIS money in the media….How sad>>> They learned nothing growing up!!! Not even after watching their mother carry on her husband’s name!! What a waste and a sorry excuse for children!!! Get together King kids…Your father is probably turning over in his grave!!! Never once have we heard of any of them doing anything for the minorities and they have the nerve to be fighting over money!!?! Get it together cause that sh*t is not cool!!!! Be happy with what you have!!! “GREED AND MONEY IS STILL PROVEN TO BE THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL!!!”
My thoughts on this family situtation has to do with the math that is causing division. 1+1+1=3 as we all know it. 2 of the 3 siblings appear united in their convictions about the need for more inclusion in the financial business affairs of their parents. It is very clear that Dr. Martin and Coretta Scott King left their children an enormous legacy which has resulted in millions for the King children and therefore there should be a greater legacy for Dr. King’s grandchildren provided how both his and Dr. Coretta’s Estate is managed. It appears that one of the three children and that being Brother Dexter is managing the estates without the full participation of his brother and sister, Martin Jr. and Bernice. If this is what is happening, I’m in agreement that if efforts to communicate with Dexter have not proven sucessful so that the three siblings are united with decision making about their parent’s estate, then Martin Jr. and Bernice have to take it to the next level. Its not just Dexter whose concerns are to be considered with this matter . It is also Martin Jr and Bernice whose concerns must be taken into consideration. Also, Dr. Kings first grandchild was born a few months ago so legal sensitivity must be given for Dr. King’s grandchildren as well as the overall mission of what their father and mother wanted to accomplish for the family generations to come. If proper oversight and management is not taking place, there may not be a financial legacy for the King family in the future. With our prayers for the King brothers and sisters Dr. King’s legacy for his children and grandchildren will not only stay alive but will increase so that that they can continue to keep the hope of alive of others as their father and mother both desired.
If this is all true it do sound as if .’Dexter’.Did a little side betting on this own with out the consent of his brother and sister. I think Dexter said to him self well Iam in charge of things so I should get a little more It may have been ok if he just asked his brother and sister.

I AGREE! THIS IS SO EMBARASSING TO SEE THAT SUCH A INTELLIGENT FAMILY CANNOT RESOLVE ISSUES OUTSIDE OF THE PUBLIC EYE. THIS JUST GIVES THE ONE’S WHO CAN’T STAND FOR WHAT DR.KING STOOD FOR, SOMETHING TO LAUGH AND TALK ABOUT.I DON’T RESPECT THEM AT ALL, DR.KING AND MRS. KING IS, I KNOW, DISSAPOINTED.
