Moroccan Floods Kill 13 People
October 27th, 2008Moroccan floods kill 13 people. In Morocco, floods from torrential rains destroyed several homes resulting in the deaths of 13 people, reports the BBC. The floods swept away 11 people in the country’s Nador province (which was hit especially hard by the storm) and two people in Tangiers. The rain that hit Nador was the heaviest the region had seen in more than 20 years. “The deaths are due to heavy flooding in the wadi of Guerti which swept away 11 people, including a child of two,” a Nador spokesman told Agence France Presse. About 20 homes fell because of the flooding and many homes are still under water. The two people in Tangiers died when flooding caused a river to overflow and engulf more than 100 manufacturing plants that have since been closed. Rescue teams along with the nation’s army have been sent to the area to help with relief efforts, according to the interior ministry.
