Muslim Researchers Sue Texas A&M
September 29th, 2008Two Muslim researchers sue Texas A&M. Two Muslim researchers at Texas A&M University are suing the institution and several of their colleagues, claiming that they were mistreated and eventually fired merely because of their religious beliefs and native country. In a federal lawsuit, the husband-wife couple Mundhir Ridha and Saeeda Ali Muhsen say that their colleagues regularly mocked and mistreated them, at one point even throwing feces and urine on their prayer rug. “The folks at A&M treated them horribly because they looked different, ate different food and spoke differently and because they are from Iraq and Muslim,” the couple’s lawyer, Shane McClelland, told The Houston Chronicle. He said that an investigation has turned up evidence that the pair were exposed to a hostile work place. Ironically, Ridha and Muhsen, who specialize in in-vitro fertilization, ended up at the university after fleeing persecution four years ago for their research in their native Iraq. A spokesman for Texas A&M said that “it’s the university’s policy not to discriminate against anyone.” Ridha was fired in 2007, three years after being hired by the university after complaining of the work environment. Muhsen did sabbatical research for two years and worked for the university for about six months before getting fired.
