Nas Writes Open Letter in Response to Gang Beating

Long considered one of the most conscious emcees in Hip-Hop, Nas decided he could not sit by after seeing video footage of the tragic death of 16-year-old honor roll student Derrion Albert in Chicago late last week.
Nas wrote an open letter to the youth yesterday in which he told our teenagers, or “Young Warriors” that they are “fighting the wrong war.”

Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong wars! Killing each other is definitely played out. Being hurt from the lost of a love one was never cool.
Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong war! I know that feeling, that frustration with life and needing to take it out on someone, any one. But….
We chose the dumbest things to go the hardest for. I remember seeing deaths over 8 ball jackets, Fila sneakers, and name plate chains. Deaths over “he say, she say”!!!!! “I’m from this block or I’m from that block”, or “my moms n pops is f*cked up now the whole world gotta pay”!!!
I remember feeling like I was the hardest “n*gga” breathing. And I couldn’t wait to prove it. But let’s think. What are we really proving?? And proving what to who?? Everybody knows Chicago breeds the strongest of the strong but I just feel, me, being ya brother from another state feels your pain as if I grew up with you in ya very own household.
You have the ability and mindpower to change they way we are looked at. Look who’s watching us young warriors, look who’s throwing us in jail constantly, look at the ignorance in the world. Look at the racist dogs who love to see us down. Loving to bury us in the ground or in jail where we continue this worthless war on one another.
Young warriors…. We are WASTING more and more time. We gotta get on our jobs and take over the world. Cuz this movie left the theaters years ago, Juice, Menace, Boys n the Hood , Blood n Blood Out, Belly!
When we see each other why do we see hatred? Why were we born in a storm, born soldiers, WARRIORS….and instead of building each other up we are at war with each other.. May the soul of this young person find peace with the almighty. I’m with you young warriors. You’re me and I’m you. But trust me! you are fighting the wrong war.

I had so many ideas that I wanted to share after reading this letter by Bro. Nas. All I can bring myself to say is this: There is a soul that has been taken undeservingly for such a foolish reason. Let this and every other act of violence be a lesson to us all, that life is a gift, and we are all a part of HIM- the breath of life that breathes you. We all make up an intricate part of the bigger picture. With just one link missing, our purpose is not complete. LOVE-give it, breathe it, speak it, nourish it, embrace it, allow it to lead you to HIM. Accept it and know that it is the only one true thing in this world that connects us to Yah. Those people who committed this crime are lost, without any idea of where to go, who they are, or from whom they Came-This too is a tragedy. My heart, thoughts, and deep condolences go out to the family of this young Man. So many lives have been affected by this. Yet so many more can be changed, if we just pay attention. Shalom!
As i view the video, i can only say, it starts at home. We have always had two strong advocates in our community, and thats God and the Church. God still sits on the throne, but the Church must get back out in the streets. I hear so many times , you go out there and get shot messing with those bad children. Perfect love cast out fear. Use wisdom, stop depending on governmental funding to fix all our problems. We need to began prayer in our churches, every week if necassary, God will get serious when he know our hearts are sincere. God has never failed us. Look how far he has brought us a race. No lets not blame anyone, but ourselves. Because God has all power in his hand, the devil can not do more to us as a race than what we allow him to do. Come on people of God. The harvest is ripe, but the labors are few. Our baby’s are crying out for some type of love, That love can only be given by God. Look around in your church tomorrow, and tell me how many young black men are attending. Why is that, we can rid around in the community with blind folds on, and say we love God?
Thanks nas for ur words.. its about time rappers are giving words of incouragement and not rapping about h*es and drugs… i feel that young boys will listen to nas before they listen to there parent.. hiphop is what our young black ppl love to listen to and to young black boys the life that rappers rap about is the life that black boys wanna live.. to some ppl at watever cost.. but what the young boys dont know is rappers are just making money there not really doing as they rap so more raapers should come out and do as nas and let blacks know KILLING IS SSSOOO NOT COOL AND UR HURTING UR FAMILY AND UR VICTIMS FAMILY.. i live in chicago but i refuse to be a protagy of the “hood” i will rise above that hood mentality and become another educated black woman whos independent and i will be an advocate for my young blacks.. i want to get to our youth while there young because when there teenagers and older its a little to late…black power!!!

Nas has always been the man, And is still proven why it’s well deserved, However the problem is bigger than the kids, look at the harsh condition in the community, education, Lack of resources, I’m not making any excuses for these guys, But there are some contributing factors. The teachers are under payed. the courts done took fathering out the household, The schools looks just as worse as an jail. No one trust the police !! I feel bad for the family !!

I am so glad that someone with some sense is able to take out the time and speak to our young teens of today! I now have a whole new respect for Nas… I agree lets stop the violence.
