National: Blacks Evaporating in Oakland
December 16th, 2008Blacks are evaporating in Oakland. Oakland, Calif., is hemorrhaging Black folks. Less than three decades ago, the city on California’s East Bay was nearly half African American; today that number has declined to fewer than a third, according to new estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau last week. The figures show that Oakland has lost 27,000 African Americans since 2000, although some question the method the federal government is using to conclude the dramatic decline. Oakland City Councilman Larry Reid is not one of those who doubts the numbers. He says that in his East Oakland district Blacks represent the majority, but he believes that will not be the case in the next half-decade. “We have an incredibly fast-growing Latino population. It’s been that way for about the last seven to eight years,” he told The Oakland Tribune, noting that many Blacks are fleeing to larger, cheaper homes in other Bay-Area communities, such as Tracy and Stockton. “African-Americans are no different from any other people. They want to send their kids to good schools. They want to feel their neighborhood and their kids are safe.” In 1980, about 47 percent of Oakland residents were African-American; now that number is closer to 31 percent.
They are evaporating because they are killing one another. Having triple digit numbers of murders since 02 is the real reason. I’m from “tha twn” but happy to be out of it. Ill rep it all day (I refuse to claim TX, lol) but it isn’t a place I’d want to reside again.

The reason why they are fleeing is because of the over-saturation of Mexicans. But it not just Oakland, it’s everywhere!! We are being forced out of our own neighborhoods!! Once where African Americans where the majority, it’s now all Mexicans!! No sense in trying to close the borders now. Welcome to the United States of Mexico!!

I fully agree with SendEmBack. The neighborhood I grew up in now makes me feel like the person from another country. I had hopes of returning and buying my parents old home, but now I’d never live there. The music, the kids running around like ants, and so many cars you can’t find a place to park. I’m gonna stay where I am til they run me outta here, cuz their coming in my new neighborhood now too!

I LIVED IN OAKLAND FOR MENY YEARS ON 101 ST AND BIRCH AND I STARTED HAVING KIDS AND I KNEW I HAD TO MOVE IN ORDER TO SEE MY SON GROW UP…THE STREET WILL GET YOUR KIDS , AND YES I WAS SCARED FOR THAT, SO I MOVED MY SON IS 16 TEEN NOW AND IM PRAYEN FOR ONE DAY TO SEE GRAND KIDS.I KNOW ABOUT OAKLAND AND IT IS NO JOKE….OAKLAND DONT PLAY.

Well that’s a lot of black people but lord know’s that we don’t need LATINOS stepping in cause it’s bad that there every where as it is in TEAXS,CALIFORINA, and now OAKLAND now that’s just too much me personaly i would like to live some where, where there’s no LATINOS maybe ALASKA.
I agree with you Barbara, I am from Oxnard, CA and I wanted my son to see 21 so I left. I just went back to bury my dad and I felt like I was in Mexico. I read the paper in Oxnard and everyday its killings. I know if it is bad in Oxnard, it has too be worst in Oakland. I always thought I would go back to Oxnard someday but they can have it.
I live in Oakland and like anywhere else it has it’s problems, it’s a beautful city. A lot of people left to go to places like Tracy, Stockton, and other places when the housing market was good, now that their house out there isn’t worth much they want to come back. We need to pray for our city and our children.
It was a set-up for black people to move out of Oakland. Since the redevelopment of West oakland. The plan was to make it convienient to those who work and lived in san francisco and surrounding areas to live where its affordable for them. That also brought with it $$$$$$$ for the city Oakland . That’s when oakland homes and rentals sky rocketed and The plan was to push black folks out. Yea there is crime here, but, you tell me where there is no crime along with social economics. I’m not using social economics as an excuse…. believe it. I’m living it clearly!
See we’re the first to leave when things don’t work for us, instead of fight ( and I don’t mean physically but mentally) We need to be at those meetings when they are making laws that will and are going to use us as ponds
