National: Ex-Atlanta Police Sergeant Sues Chief
March 17th, 2009An African-American ex-Atlanta Police sergeant is suing the city, alleging that Chief Richard Pennington discriminated against her when he let her go two years ago. When the Atlanta Police Department dismissed Karen Wells in April 2007, officials attributed it to a “lie” she had told, she says in her suit. But Wells, who had been with the Atlanta Police Department for 25 years — the last 14 as a sergeant — at the time, says she never lied about anything, only that she misunderstood the question and made a mistake in her response. In her lawsuit, Wells says that her firing was triggered by an internal investigation about whether another city department had paid police officers properly for working additional hours to guard a water main break. In May 2005, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports, a water main broke on Peachtree Street in Buckhead. Wells was granted the extra work hours she had requested to guard the water main break. When asked whether she kept copies of paperwork for “extra jobs,” she said no. Less than two weeks later, the lawsuit contends, Wells told police officials she made a mistake because she was distracted by her mother’s surgery and was suffering from anxiety and depression. The department notified her on April 25, 2007, that she was being terminated, the lawsuit said. Wells, who is Black and 40, argues that she was punished more harshly because of her age, gender and race.

If she was under stress. It would be easy for her to have spoken with out thinking . I know if my mother was in the hospital that is all I would be focus on.

I apologize to fefe and to all the beautiful black people for all the negative things that I have ever said on this blog. I am suffering from a serious mental illness that forces me to take out my frustration on blacks every day. My Asian lover was taken from me by a black man and I have never gotten over it. Unfortunately the chief wanted to let her go anyway and the “lie” was just enough to give him an excuse to do it. This is what you call office racism.

Richard Pennington was wrong. There was a white male investigated by the FBI and a black major investigated by the FBI they were only terminated for less than 30 days. This female has been unemployed for 2 years why because she was not part of Pennington’s click. The terminated female worked the extra duty job along with 22/23 other officers. The investigation was botched up. They worked the job because the mayor wanted police presence at the location 24/7. They saved the city million but was treated like they did something wrong because the city owed those officers money.
You are right Pennington wanted to get rid of the female for personal reasons. There were others involved with conflicting responses but was not required to provided additional responses. The female was doing a great job but not well liked by others. There is so much to this story. After the female was terminated a major and three lieuteants lied about returning to work but not charged with stealing time or lying. The article was in the AJC or Creative Loafing in May 2007. There error was considered an administrative error because Pennington signed the form as well. A major lied- artice in ajc or creative loafing about the reason he failed to obtain certification sign documents as the academy director outcome retired. This female was not given no options. The words jjustice, due process or facts mean nothing the female is still wainting for her day in court. Women rights or justice for all mean nothing when you are not part of some policital click.
Has anyone attempted to contact the female. BET this would be a great article to share with other black female who struggle actually work in law enforcement that is not part of the click and treated like dirt when they refuse to sleep around like a dog with a dog. Women in law enforcement have to prove themselves time and time again. They have to work extra hard when they do not sleep around. White female are treated like queens and black females are treated like ************.
