National: Howard University is a Haven For Crime; Atlanta Accused Murderer Was A Slick One, Deputy Testifies

Howard University is a haven for crime. With at least a dozen Howard University students getting jacked on campus in the past month and two others getting raped, the school’s police department wants everybody to carry the dispatch number and keep their cell phones at the ready. “I urge students to call the dispatch number, since most students have cell phones,” Campus Police Chief Leroy K. James told Jessica Lewis of Black College Wire. “[Use your cell phone so] that when you’re in a situation where you need help, you get help.” Nearly half of the robberies occurred on the historically Black campus in Washington, D.C. The number of robberies and assaults is likely even higher than the number reported by campus police, because the figures do not include unreported crimes, Lewis writes. The number to the dispatch is (202) 806-1100 and is to be used whenever students find themselves in a situation requiring police assistance.

Atlanta accused murderer was a slick one, deputy testifies. Accused mass murderer Brian Nichols is one slick criminal, a Fulton County Sheriff’s deputy testified Wednesday. During Nichols’ trial, on charges that he killed a judge and three other people in a daring escape from an Atlanta courtroom in 2005, Deputy Sharon Pauls told jurors that the defendant had warmed up to Deputy Cynthia Hall and eventually convinced her to escort him to court without shackles before overpowering her and brutally beating her. She was left brain-damaged from that whipping and won’t be testifying, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Pauls said that Hall, who escorted Nichols to court each day for his rape trial, chatted with him daily like he was a friend. “Deputy Hall stated we didn’t need to place leg irons on him,” Pauls testified. Two days later, the Journal-Constitution reports, “Nichols beat Hall after she removed his handcuffs so he could change from his ‘inmate blues’ to his civilian clothes for trial.” There were other times when Nichols displayed his cunningness, Pauls said, pointing to an occasion when the defendant allegedly tried to get jurors to see his handcuffs while being escorted to his initial rape trial, knowing full well that such an event could have caused a mistrial. Jurors aren’t allowed to see defendants in shackles or cuffs because jail jewelry makes them look more like dangerous criminals and could prejudice the jury against them. “The defendant told his attorney that he thought a juror saw him,” said Pauls, who now is a patrol officer for Clayton County Police. “It was concluded that she [the juror] did not see the defendant.” On two other occasions, she was forced to warn Nichols about trying to carry ink pens out of the courtroom in his Bible, she said. Inmates can only have rubber ink pens, because the others can be used as weapons. “I said ‘Nichols, I told you before not to take pens out of your courtroom. And he said I don’t have a pen. I said, Yes you do. It is right there in your Bible.”

Is it just my imagination or are HBCU’s often located in bad neighborhoods? Howard University, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Johnson C. Smith University, etc….

Victoria Said on

that is not you imagination seschris! HBCU are often loacted in some of the worst neighborhoods and thats so sad. look at VSU you can walk to the hood from there or try St. Aug’s right across the street the hood! now look at the white colleges. nice neighborhoods. that is so wrong. we gotta make a change.

A lot of the HBCU campuses are located in the black community because they were founded doing the days of slavery and Jim Crow. Since then the Neighborhoods have declined older people moved away and a lot of properties were foreclosed. Are you can be like the Univer. Of South Carolina buy the blacks out are take over the property. Years ago these Neighborhoods had very middle class and professional blacks in around the colleges. Ballet Schools, campuses were open to people in the area you could go swiming and use a lot of the Colleges facilities. And get help with your homework.

its sad to say seschris but alot of the areas where HBCUs are located are definitely near or in the hood. i’ve had friends tell me about dodging bullets on the way to class. As for the Nichols situation, i agree with you Niecie that Halls should’ve just stuck to her job and not let her guard down. I also feel like there should’ve been another officer around while Halls was escorting Nichols.

Howard might be in a bad neighborhood but its a good school…..HBCUs were created to serve the BLACK community as a whole so smetimes u hve to look beyond the neighborhood n look more into the academics it offer….Howard has its own problems which can be fixed if they really care about the students…hpefully the new president will help us out….i still love Howard it da place to be!!!

I was just curious if you are a graduate from Howard University; in addition, what barometers did you use to say that it’s a good school.
thanks

I attended VSU-and it was interesting because in one direction you could walk to the hood, but if you went another way you would be in a white neighborhood. I took an African American Sociology course, and the professor( i don’t know how true this is but it could be true) stated that HBCU were built in the hood to remind African Americans of their place in society, and no matter how educated we are, we will still be considered ghetto and lazy and that our degrees do not matter. Just thought i would share this

two comments, one] that female officer was trained.to escort inmates in a safe way. she new the rules. her mistake cost her dearly. two ] i went to prairie view a/m when you are commited it does not matter were you are in the hood or in the ghetto stay on course so you can say. .that is were i went to school but that is not were i am from an do not forget to give back to help the people in the hood.

Most colleges period are located in the innercity…HU is just having its times…I mean crime is everywhere….Virgina Tech needisaymore??

Some would say Yale University (New Haven, CT) is in a bad area also… as a matter of fact someone was shot and killed last week…
Dude saw her coming all the way… Women need to realize that some men out there will tell you anything in order to get control of your mind…

I graduated from VSU and grad school from Howard U. and am extremely proud of it! I love my schools!! They are both GREAT! Yes, there are some improvements that can be made to ensure the safety of students. Overall, I think these same problems exist at EVERY school, they are just more highly publicized when they take place at an HBCU. Walking through the streets of DC may not be the safest place for students. I do believe that being in that particular neighborbood gave me a better appreciation for the Dr,’s Lawyers, Politicians and other prominent people who received there education at HU. People from those same “ghetto” or “bad” neighborhoods in Petersburg and DC made a way out of no way and got a degree. Look at Temple for example..located right in the heart of Philly. Philly is a haven for crime but we don’t hear much about what takes place around Temple. Sad to say but crime is everywhere.
