I graduated from VSU and grad school from Howard U. and am extremely proud of it! I love my schools!! They are both GREAT! Yes, there are some improvements that can be made to ensure the safety of students. Overall, I think these same problems exist at EVERY school, they are just more highly publicized when they take place at an HBCU. Walking through the streets of DC may not be the safest place for students. I do believe that being in that particular neighborbood gave me a better appreciation for the Dr,’s Lawyers, Politicians and other prominent people who received there education at HU. People from those same “ghetto” or “bad” neighborhoods in Petersburg and DC made a way out of no way and got a degree. Look at Temple for example..located right in the heart of Philly. Philly is a haven for crime but we don’t hear much about what takes place around Temple. Sad to say but crime is everywhere.

Some would say Yale University (New Haven, CT) is in a bad area also… as a matter of fact someone was shot and killed last week…

Most colleges period are located in the innercity…HU is just having its times…I mean crime is everywhere….Virgina Tech needisaymore??

two comments, one] that female officer was trained.to escort inmates in a safe way. she new the rules. her mistake cost her dearly. two ] i went to prairie view a/m when you are commited it does not matter were you are in the hood or in the ghetto stay on course so you can say. .that is were i went to school but that is not were i am from an do not forget to give back to help the people in the hood.

I attended VSU-and it was interesting because in one direction you could walk to the hood, but if you went another way you would be in a white neighborhood. I took an African American Sociology course, and the professor( i don’t know how true this is but it could be true) stated that HBCU were built in the hood to remind African Americans of their place in society, and no matter how educated we are, we will still be considered ghetto and lazy and that our degrees do not matter. Just thought i would share this
