National News: Civil Rights Era Suspect’s Trial Delayed.; Abercrombie Sued Over Muslim Head Scarf
August 7th, 2008Trial for Civil Rights Era suspect is delayed. James Bonard Fowler, the White Alabama trooper who will stand trial for killing a Black man at a civil rights rally a half century ago must wait another month or so before facing his accusers. The trial, originally scheduled for Sept. 11, will be held on Oct 20. Fowler allegedly shot Jimmie Lee Jackson in cold blood in Marion, Ala., in 1965 following civil rights demonstration. Fowler, who was indicted last year, says the shooting was self-defense.
Abercrombie is sued over a Muslim head scarf. Arguing that Abercrombie & Fitch violated the civil rights of a Muslim job applicant by denying her application because of her head scarf, a Muslim civil rights group has sued the popular clothing outlet. According to the lawsuit, filed at the Oklahoma City branch of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the district manager for the clothing store at Woodland Hills Mall told a young woman in late June that her hijab, a head scarf worn observant Muslim women, did not fit the Abercrombie image. “Employers have a clear legal duty to accommodate the religious practices of their workers,” said Razi Hashmi, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Oklahoma, which helped the girl file the complaint. “To deny someone employment because of apparent religious bias goes against long-standing American traditions of tolerance and inclusion.” The council declined to release the name of the plaintiff; she is younger than 18. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 stipulates that employers must attempt to accommodate the religious practices of an employee unless doing so would create an undue hardship for the employer.

Was there any way to lose the scrarf..does it really matter. If the reason the scarf is worn cause of religious reasons..and it cannot be taken of…then why not apply for some other job. If this scarf is indeed messing with the establishments image ..then there are other Jobs besides this one. I’m very sure… there are clothing in this store that the Muslim wouldn’t wear any way …so work at a place such as that. No need to sue…just keep the peace and move on. There are other Jobs… such as field work….lol… or whatever. What if someone had a religion to wear sagging pants and wanted a Job there also……should the establishment be sued because the company wouldn’t allow them to work there. COME ON PEOPLE!!! LET TRUST AND LOVE GOD AND TREAT EACH OTHER IN A PEACEFUL WAY.
MY LORD!!! WOW
The bottom line is this innocent girl should not have been rejected a job at this establishment because of her hijab. The employer should’ve looked at her credentials. Nobody should be forced to seek other employment because of thier religion. The first person that commented is a moron.
You do realized I pray that your comment was so ignorant. For you to compare wearing an hijab to sagging pants just shows that you really need to learn more about other cultures. Let it would’ve been a black woman and she wasn’t allowed to wear her hair in those weave hair styles or a dude that didn’t get it and he says it’s because he’s black you’ve been all on that talking about injustice…. We must remember all people must be protected no matter what. Not just black but hispanics, indians etc. remember that because in one way or another we’re going to need each other.
Racism is not just for Black – If your not White…….
What goes around comes around
I’m really shocked and surprised by the first commentor (Shannlinwo). You are either an idiot, or foolish, or just plain stupid. Clearly, this person is someone who was born here (in the US) and hasn’t ventured any further than a 15 mile radius of his/her home town. And when you said “some other job … such as field work”, I damn near fell off my chair.
It’s idiots like the interviewer telling her that she wasn’t a fit for the position because of her “appearance”. And it’s idiots like you (commentor #1) who perpetuate racism and in ALL ITS FORMS.
Shannlinwo: you are sounding just as rasist as that employer right about now- and then at the end you have the never to say trust and love God and be peaceful… you are makling no sence…maybe you just typed your 2 cents wrong…NO ONE should be treated this way PERIOD…and if someone doesnt believe in God they do believe in law and BOTH the law and GOD say treating people this way is WRONG! and thats my 2 cents
The first poster is very young…it’s so sad-the children of our future. *smdh*
Wow! (to the first commentor) that was hella ignorant of you to say that! What the hell does wearing a hijab have to do with sagging pants? Communication and comprehension are vital, especially when writing on a forum such as this. Now if you were comparing a hijab to a yarmulke (that’s the little skull cap/hat worn by Jewish men; two things that are actually related and make sense when paired or compared for that matter) you may have had a point but then again not really because of the comment that followed. No one should have to seek employment elsewhere because their religion or culture requires them to wear a scarf or any other garment.
The manager was lame for telling her that and you’re lame (Shannlinwo) for saying and thinking that ignorant B.S. Don’t be so pious! You’re comparing apples to oranges…again communication and comprehension are vital….step your language arts and reading skills up a notch and try to offer a more intelligent response next time.
LETS HANG THAT RED NECK BASTARD!
yes the first commentator is most def insane.
1st off they said her hijab didnt fit their image not her religion. ppl look closely at the paragraph. i’m 6ft 6 me working in a small people store wouldn’t fit the bill either. certain jobs require certain dress codes…like some jobs require women to wear skirts and men slacks ties and such. if i walked in2 a surfer store with a suit and tie on i might be turned away, because the patrons wouldnt have a connection with me off top by my appearence. why do we always have 2 make things in2 religious matters or race matters
I agree with The Reighn. It is not all about religion or race. Certain jobs have certain dress codes and in this case, she would not be a good candidate for the job. You all know that, so please keep it real.
Reighn and Crystal you missed the point. Shannlinwo, you don’t have a clue. What the both of you are saying is true but this is clearly discrimination. What the both of you are talking about are dress codes or uniforms. Reighn, if I owned a surf shop I would expect you to interview with a shirt and tie. I might require you to work in shorts and a t-shirt wearing sandals because of the image I want to portray. I reside in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Woodland Hill Mall is located. Half of the men who work in their store are guy. While not bashing guys. Does that fit the image they want to portray? If so or not, what image is the image they want to portray? Most of the employees just wear their clothing line.
were are my comments
it appears that THE REIGHN is the only one that really read this article.
but REIGHN…what do you really expect from a site that promotes hate in intolerance. of course the majority of the people on this site are gonna try to make it about race or discrimination.
it’s a job…and the look didn’t fit. it’s about business…and nothing else.
can we PLEASE stop trying to make all this about black and white or God….because it’s not about any of that.
I mean really…… Why in the heck would anyone apply at a store that they couldn’t or wouldn’t benefit from. Companies hire employees that they too can also benefit from which is why they would require you to have and display a certain image…….that being the image that reflects there company. So lady please stop the madness and tryin to get a quick buck off of something YOU yourself supposedly can’t change.
