I agree with Justice Thomas in the sense that the best should be admitted to the best schools…PERIOD. If you allow sub par (academically) students in, then we will end up having a sub par country of less than elite doctors, lawyers, businessmen, etc. Comparing test scores, gpa, and extracuricular activities should be sufficient. Where does race come into getting high LSAT scores?? If it’s because many minorities do not have access to test prep, or college aid, then we should target those factions….not allowing the non-elite into the top schools. END AFFIRMATIVE ACTION…THE BEST FOR THE BEST.

UMLAW one question…would you send your child to an all black school? I doubt it, because you know the education is substandard and often do not have the resources you mention because noone cares about black kids.

It is obvious, that white schools have more money therefore their children end up as you put it, often times end up as “the best”. A black child and a white child that come from similar upbringing and financial status equal the playing field. However, as you know, far more blacks live in poverty than whites.

Ignorant: i would not want to send my child to an all Black school b/c, as you said, it is more likely that it will have substandard education/resources. That is a situation for the government to handle, and the local communities. In terms of admission into the top schools, they should only let the most qualified people in…PERIOD. No matter what obstacles the prospective student had to go through, if he/she doesn’t have the grades/scores to match the standard, he/she doesn’t deserve to get in. Being in poverty or going to substandard schools doesn’t give you a pass to an ivy league college/grad school…it really doesn’t.
I have heard of the phrase ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.’ But that’s not always apropos. I didn’t know anyone…but i eventually got into Michigan Law. My parents didn’t know anyone when they came to this country (i was born here). Hard work, and good scores trump ‘knowing someone.’

You have it all twisted. Justice Thomas does seem like a hypocrite since he ‘used’ AA to get into Yale Law School, but maybe he shouldn’t have that position in the first place. This, if anything, could be a reason AA shouldn’t exist. You and many others do not like his perspective/qualificiations. He got there basically b/c of AA and the appointment from a President. How is he closing doors by getting rid of AA?? Are you saying that the only way an african american can get into ivy league schools is via AA?? Here I go again. I am Black and against affirmative action. I don’t care about Thomas. The best person for the job is the one with the qualifications to do it. If you hire a person based on color regardless of skills, you don’t get the product that position calls for. It is illogical. We cannot demand equal rights and at the same time preferential treatment based on our color. We have to demand equal rights and access with controls in place to ensure discrimination isn’t based on anything but proper qualifications. Why is that so hard? One poster spoke of our ancestors struggles. Well so shall I. Our ancestors were abused, but they still managed to build their own schools, homes, stores, banks, etc… What happened? Forced integration. After desegretion, the government forced integration. Blacks no longer wanted to IMPROVE what they had, but wanted to get what whites had. They demanded it, when they should have said, “ok, we want to now improve what we have and build on it”. Instead we demand preferential hiring practices and preferential admission to higher institutions. Why not just demand equal access to government programs to improve schools and equal consideration for business loans? Why do we keep banging on whites doors to let us in to places they don’t want us? Why don’t we own many of the businesses in our urban communities? Why do our children celebrate anti-intellectualism?
