National News: Georgia Boy Dies After Being Shot By Little Girl; NAACP Will Protest Conn. Town’s Police Actions

August 18th, 2008

A Georgia boy dies after being shot by a little girl. A Georgia teen died Saturday after being accidentally shot in the head by a 12-year-old girl late Friday. Police said that 17-year-old Trevayne R. Cozart was pronounced dead at the Gwinnet Medical Center in suburban Atlanta. He had been playing with a friend when the friend’s little sister fired a weapon. Although the girl’s mother was home at the time, she was not in the room where the shooting to place, police said. No charges have been filed against the parents or the child.

NAACP will protest police actions in Conn. town.

The Stamford, Conn., branch of the NAACP, saying that police are “mentally abusing” Black youths, will hold a protest against local law enforcement on Aug. 31. The mass action will mark the first demonstration under NAACP President Jack Bryant, who took over the helm of the chapter five years ago. “I feel this plan of action is necessary as the need to begin policing our police department,” Bryant told Mayor Dannel Malloy and Public Safety Director William Callion in an e-mail a week ago. The mayor responded that he was willing to meet with Bryant, who told The Advocate newspaper that the “the time for meetings is over. This issue has been exhausted with meetings between the police department and the community. I think it’s time for action now.” Bryant says that the complaints from the African-American community have been pouring in. He says that he even witnessed one “disturbing” incident earlier this month but declined to offer details, The Advocate reported. “I approached the officers and they said it’s an investigation and they couldn’t give me any details,” he said. The incident didn’t involve a beat-down, but it was troubling, he added. “It wasn’t physical police brutality but I think mentally it was police brutality … I don’t want this to seem like we’re singling out the whole police department. I’m sure there are a lot of good police officers on the force. There’s just a few who make it seem bad for those whole police force.”

You know everybody’s going to ask: how in the world did a little girl get a hold of a gun, a loaded one at that!!!!! haven’t the parents ever heard of “lock & key”, & also stashed it away where the little girl couldn’t possibly get to it! Damn shame……My condolences though (besides my rant).

what a shame… this young girl has to live with this for the rest of her life. Why was the parent not charged? She should be held accountable. People know where your kids are going…. I wonder if his parents knew guns just laid around this house for any 12 year old to use? This is a shame.

I really hope the NAACP can bring some unity to this situation. I really think it should begin at our Black youth. Why not round up the Black youth and try and get them to stay in their place ..this would solve so many of the probelms thats going on. What are they doing to have to come into contact with some of these over extreme officers. I say just stay in their place …stop keeping up so much trouble. If there was no police at all…folks wouldn’t know what to do…cause these same thugs that are being mistreated by some on the police force…. would give us the what not. There would be no peace… some of the teens would be out of control.

Obviously shannlinwo, you dont live in that area. Not everyone in that area is a thug. I have plenty of friends from Stamford black and white that all agree that the degree of harrassment these police use on black youth is not neccesarry.

Shannlinowo…. It seems like you have been in “place” quite some time. I can tell you are out of touch with community Issues and American youth. It sounds like you live in a time bubble get out of the protected community you live in and walk among your people . You will learn that we live in the twenith century now and you do not have to be in “place’ to become a target , you can still experince you brothers and sisters and not fell at risk. And guess what !… You don’t have to submit to anyone who treats you in an injust manner. you can be a black person with a voice and have ideas , Now you can speak out and be heard sometimes you will be the object of attention but that is the price you pay for progress. I have one question for you are you an “african American”? I say this in no offence.

Suburbia speaks…thank you Shannlinowo! We all want peace and to be treated fairly..whether we’re in a gated community or in the PJ’s behind barbed-wire! We all want it!

“Gated negros”.. That have chains around their minds. And a false since of protection will allways view Themselves as ‘other than” when filling out a form!

lynn… naw I’m not offended by your question ….sure I’m A Black American……I’m not in a time bubble. Maybe you really did’t understand my comment…reread it maybe you missed something. I’m very much in touch with my people and has always been and will always be.

VVS….THANK YOU…YES WE ALL WANT IT.
lamar…ok you right I do not live in that area…surely there are more than thugs thats being harrassed….but they are causing the innocent people to be treated as such. See this what I was saying about the NAACP rounding the ones up thats causing all the trouble and try and to get them to simmer down. Well lamar the article didn’t say anything about the whites there..so I didn’t comment on them. lamar then it seems that area do have a problem…and maybe some of those officers need to be remove from thier post. It’s sad to hear bout so much trouble with some of the officers ..for they are making the good officers look bad. I do hope the NAACP can bring some peace in this.

The NAACP must become proactive in Stamford. For years all they have done is make NEGATIVE noise and fight internally. While the organization was developed to react and act upon civil rights, the branch in Stamford does not have to react or over react to many negative situations.
If the leadership of the NAACP is truly interested in uplifting the minorities in Stamford they would be proactive and provide preventive opportunities for the youth. These actions would include:
1. Ensuring a minority is part of the Board of Education (there will not be a minority on the BOE once Bob King is replaced by Julia Wade)
2. Fund educational programming
3. Work with other organizations to develop opportunities for youth and young adults (esp. related to skill training)
4. Go into the underserved communities and develop relationships with parents and youth
5. Invest in scholarships for deserving youth going off to college (I would like to see an audit of the funds raised from the last Freedom Fund Dinner. They had to have raised over $15,000 given the ticket and table price, attendance and it was held at a low cost location.)
6. Given the fact that the minority population in Stamford is nearly 50% Hispanic, the NAACP should invite a number to Hispanic leaders to join the Executive Committee.
7. Given there inability to retain TRUE leaders with the skills needed to lead and be respected by community, the current leadership should retire to allow the organization move forward.
8. NAACP has to recruite, train and allow younger citizens totake the lead.(there was not a person under the age of 40 in the DOZEN FOOL MARCH on Sunday. Nor did the persons that started this CRAZINESS participate. This confirms that the organization is not effective nor has a voice in Stamford.
We as citizens have to hold the NAACP and other like organizations accountable. If they collect funds to help the underserved, everyone should audit the results. Are they able to deliver on expections and do we need the NAACP? What have they really done lately? Voter registration and foolish protests are not enough!
