National News: The “Mama” of the Civil Rights Ear Is Remembered; Birmingham, Ala., mayor addresses Black community crime
March 3rd, 2008The “Mama” of the Civil Rights Ear is remembered
Rosa Parks was the “Mother of the Civil Rights Movement,” but Johnnie Carr, who passed away last week, was “Mama.” That’s how hundreds of people who packed her homegoing ceremony at Alabama State University Saturday remembered the childhood friend of Parks, who suffered a stroke at the age of 97. “Dr. Carr was ‘Mama Carr’ to me, and the family understands that,” said state Rep. John Knight, D-Montgomery. “She would spank me from time to time. My mother and father needed help with me, and she gave that assistance.” Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright thanked Carr’s family for sharing her with the rest of the world. “We’re so fortunate worldwide, and particularly here in Montgomery, of having her in our midst to always be that example of pride, but most importantly of motherhood,” he said. “She was our mama. She helped us when we needed her. She would pick us up when we fell. She would console us when we were hurting, and she always inspired us with words of encouragement.” Even President Bush sent a statement of praise, calling her a “a true patriot and staunch advocate for civil rights.” Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, proclaimed “long live the legacy of Mrs. Johnnie Carr and her works.” Click to send condolences.
Birmingham, Ala., mayor addresses Black community crime
Birmingham, Ala., Mayor Larry Langford has kicked off a second phase of his campaign to reduce Black crime in his city. In early February, he pulled together about 4,000 Black men to address what he called a growing crisis. This time, he’s getting Black women in on the act. At this weekend’s crime summit at the Fair Park Arena, only women were invited for a forum to explore solutions. “I don’t make any apologies about the summit, I know where the problems are,” he said, noting that he is not ashamed about airing dirty laundry. “And I’m tired of being afraid of you as my brother. When we had nothing, we didn’t have these little positions; we were forced to come together. It seems like the more educated we’ve become the bigger fools we’ve become. It is time for you and me to look at each other and not be afraid of each other.” The third phase, a family summit for men and women of all races, will be held within next few weeks, he said. What do you think is the best way to address crime in the Black community?

I think it is wonderful what the mayor of Ala. is trying to do. Lets open up the dialogue, who better than the citizens of the area to give you their opinions on the answers. I also find it very interesting that when all we had was each other (post slavery and during the civil rights era) we cling to one another it truly was about the village in raising our children. Now with all the advancements that have taken place for our people we seem to have lost a sense of ourselves the strength, pride, respect and LOVE we had for one another…
The Mayor of Alabama is right when said that we are as foolish educated as we were uneducated. We always blaming Europeans for the bad things that happen in our community, but the first time African American’s get a couple dollars, they buy into the Europeans idea of what is the “Ideal Dream”. For example, everytime African Americans invent something (stop light, computers, etc)….they blame Europeans for it being stolen, but we quick to kill Pulu (another African American) for a nickel or a weed sack or we sell it and when the buyer, which is usually European expands on the invention the African inventor gets mad when the Europena does not give them a penny above what was written on the check the African happily cashed, accompanied with the picture of the African American with a spanking new car, house, link chains, rings, and furs made courtesy of Europeans as Exhibit A at the hearing we lose or we get some “mercy money” in order to stop us from looking like a fool. Then we know so much, why aren’t Africans that are wealthy moving to other 3rd world (impoverished) countries in order to satrt over the Imotep philosophy, because once again we have adopted the Imperialist attitude that we worked hard and we ain’t going no where. Quitting while you ahead doesn’t mean you are losing, it simply means cut a loss that wasn’t bankable anyhow. That is why, Civil Service Agents are still easedropping, because all of us got tapes of us bad mouthing each..From the European saying demeaning things and publicly love us all to every group including Africans saying things in supposed privacy that questions their integrity in public when they say we should get along. We are all phonies and everybody need to stop faking like they are not. Ya’ll saying the war is in a country Pulu never been too, but really the war is in America and been in America since the first treaty went bad, and everybody think lets create babies with the enemies so we forced to be together when we all know the child always favors one over the other. Be afraid if your children don’t love you.
