National: Ohio Veterans Group to Honor Black Soldiers; Laura Bush and Michelle Obama Meet; The High Court Upholds “Victims’-Impact” Evidence

November 11th, 2008

Ohio Veterans group to honor Black soldiers. The Dayton African American Legacy Institute will for the first time honor Black soldiers at an Armistice Day memorial  program. The program honors local Blacks who died while serving their country, reports The Dayton Daily News. “Each year, I see celebrations for our veterans, but I never see observances for the Black soldiers who sacrificed for us,” said Bill C. Littlejohn, Dayton Municipal Court Judge and board president of the institute. “African-Americans fought in every war from the Revolution to the present day. The group recognizes that for decades Black soldiers returning from war were ostracized.  “We want to honor their heroism and their perseverance,” Littlejohn said. The group will hold a reception and program this evening called “African-American Veterans: A History of Service and Sacrifice.” They will present medals they received from the government posthumously to families of deceased veterans and to living veterans, Littlejohn said.  .

Laura Bush and Michelle Obama

Laura Bush and Michelle Obama meet. First lady Laura Bush shared some tips with Michelle Obama on how to survive in the White House – particularly with young daughters, according to Reuters. As she gave Michelle Obama a tour of the mansion that will soon be her home. “It was a bit of a momentous day,” Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters on a flight from Washington to Chicago about the Obamas visit to the White House Monday, less than one week after Barack Obama won a historic election to succeed President George W. Bush.  “I don’t know that I would characterize him as awestruck.” Read the rest here.
The High Court upholds “victims’-impact” evidence. By a slight majority the Supreme Court said on Monday that the lives of the victim can be weighed as evidence in determining the fate of the accusers. The justices turned down appeals from two Los Angeles convicted murderers who said it was unfair that videotapes of the victims’ lives were played for jurors before they decided the killers should die.  Defense lawyers had argued that this “cinematic evidence . . . designed to play on the jury’s emotions” should be excluded from a sentencing hearing in a capital case. In the first case, the justices rejected an appeal from Douglas Kelly, who was sentenced to death for the 1993 rape, robbery and murder of Sara Weir. She was found dead in a North Hollywood apartment after being stabbed 29 times. The justices turned down a similar appeal from Samuel Zamudio, who was convicted in 1997 of murdering an elderly couple in South Gate. In both cases, video of the victims were played for their jurors. However, Stevens wrote, “the videos added nothing relevant to the jury’s deliberations.”  Justices David H. Souter and Stephen G. Breyer agreed the court should take up the issue, but it takes four votes in the high court to grant an appeal.

Black soldiers (along with those courageous black men who served in the other branches of the military) have been shamefully overlooked, especially during the Black History month obeservances which are sometimes old repeats of the previous years’ observances.
How many armchair African-American historians know who Crispus Attucks was or what his contribution to U.S. history was? How about who was NOT really the first black Navy diver was.
Who was the first black man to become a an Army general? (To those who already know the answer, did you know that after he was discharged, he had to accept being an enlisted man to return to the Army.) His son also left a significant mark on military history. But instead of subjecting you to questions, I’ll share the answers.
Crispus Attucks was the first black man to die in combat during the American Revolution.
Master Chief Carl Brashear, the subject of teh film Men of Honor was the first black man to be designated a Master Diver, but he wasn’t the first black man to be a Navy diver. Chief Gunner’s Mate John Henry “Dick” Turpin, who survived the sinking of the USS Maine in 1898 is believed to be the 1st black man to make the rank of CPO in the early 1900’s (1917?). He was a Navy Diver. Benjamin O. Davis was the 1st black man to become a general. In 1898, he was commissioned as a 2nd or 1st lieutenant with the U.S.Volunteers. At the end of the war, he was discharged. He wanted to serve in the Army, but in order to return with the regular Army, he had to enlist. Within a few years, and as an NCO, he was commissioned and rose up to flag rank (and happily, lived a long life). How many flag officers from any branch of the Armed Forces have enlisted service behind them? BTW, his son, Benjamin O. Davis Jr, became the 1st black man to become a general in the Air Force. While in West Point, fellow cadets shunned him. (I wonder how many of them made flag rank?) He was one of the celebrated Tuscogee Airmen. Benjamin O. Davis Jr retired as a lieutenant-general (3 star general) and in retirement was given his 4th star. I won’t downgrade this under the banner of Black History. I consider this to be American History . Read up, boys and girls. (The same goes for you ladies and gentlemen,)

Michelle Obama meeting laura bush, is analogous to an angel(Michelle) meeting satan’s wife(laura). Michelle Obama will be an extremely fine(literally) 1st Lady, & she will bring class, dignity, intelligence, compassion, sincerity, & most definitely beauty to the white house or now BLACK HOUSE!!! These are qualities that the previous 1st lady never demonstrated, but then again President Barack Obama will bring intelligence, honesty, dignity, compassion, & sincerity to Washington D.C., which george(example of white affirmative action)bush never possessed let alone brought to the white house.

Kirk C. Odems (aka the most racist blogger on here),
First off, Obama is 1/2 white. His mother is White…so, i guess you’re saying that he is 50% evil. Also remember that if the so-called ‘devils’ (whites) did not vote for the Biracial Obama, he WOULD NOT HAVE WON!! Blacks only make up about 20% of the votes.
Secondly, every time you say that Bush was an example of white affirmative action, you’re strengthening the notion that all affirmative action should be destroyed. So, Bush (in your opinion) got to where he is b/c he is white. And he doesn’t deserve it. Well, then black affirmative action would be a situation where a Black person gets a job or a college acceptance but is NOT DESERVING OF IT. You are so racist but call others racist. STOP BEING A HYPOCRITE.

You are so right. That is some ugly furniture. The Obamas will surely bring some flavor to the private suites of the White House.
