National: Prejudice Could Cost a Black Worker Thousands; Carjacker Killed During Shootout

Prejudice could cost a Black worker thousands. Racism is costly. In fact, racial prejudice is a key reason for the wage gap between Black and White workers, according to a new study in the Journal of Political Economy. Over a lifetime, the researchers concluded, racial prejudice accounts for a quarter of that gap, costing a Black worker up to $115,000. Kerwin Kofi Charles, from the Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago, and Jonathan Guryan, from Chicago’s Booth School of Business, found that educational inequality, differences in workers’ skill levels and other forms of discrimination likely account for the rest of the gap. The study’s authors monitored a series of surveys conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. In the surveys, White people were asked their views on issues such as interracial marriage, Whites-only private clubs, neighborhood segregation and whether or not they would vote for a Black president, e! What they found was a significant link between wage gaps and bias. “Though prejudice explains only a minority-albeit a significant one-of the Black-White wage gap, the costs borne by Blacks … are large,” the researchers found. “Consider an 18-year-old Black male choosing between two states… . Our estimates imply that if he lives in Florida rather than Massachusetts. … the net present value of his [lifetime] earnings will be about $34,000 smaller. If he lives in Mississippi rather than Wisconsin … his discounted earnings are about $115,000 smaller.”
A carjacker is killed during shootout. Henry County (Ga.) Police say they shot and killed a carjacking suspect early Thursday during a gun battle. The suspect stole a motorcycle at gunpoint from the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store on Ga. 138 near Stockbridge, police say. When the suspect wrecked the motorcycle a short distance away, officers say they chased him into a wooded area. “Multiple shots were fired at the officers by the suspect,” Henry County police Capt. Jason Bolton told WSB-TV. “Ultimately, officers did return fire,” Bolton said. “The suspect was struck and was killed.” No officers were injured during the incident. The name of the person killed was not immediately released.
THIS IS WRONG TO PUT A PRICE TAG ON SOMEONES LIFE, DEPENDING ON WHERE THEY LIVE…I HAD A COUSIN THAT GOT KILLED WALKING TO SCHOOL IN THE CROSS WALK, A BIG TRUCK RAN HER RIGHT OVER . HE SAID HE DID NOT SEE HER AND THE CROSS WALKER DID NOT GET OUT OF HER CAR….JUST BECAUSE SHE LIVED IN WEST OAKLAND THEY DIDNT WANT TO GIVE MY GRANDMOTHER ANYTHING BUT 30,000.00 SAYING WE LIVED IN THE POOREST PART OF OAKLAND AND THAT SHOUDL BE GOOD ANYWAY THEY WAS….WELL WE FOUGHT AND GOT WAY MORE BY SUING THE CITY OF OAKLAND THE TRUCKING COMPANY. SHE WAS ONLY 17 TEEN SO HOW DID THEY NO HE FUTURE AND WHAT SHE WAS WORTH.

I’m glad that your family sued because some white people value their children’s futures as being worth more than ours. We can no longer accept their assessment of our worth. We decide our worth by our actions; they are counting on our inaction. Visit any local welfare department and you will see the REAL deal. More white folks living on welfare than blacks.

I didnt quite understand why there ever was a such thing as when I think its pejudice in all races not just 1 which was at one time only whites but now I see it in all races including my own which is pretty much black I dont think I mixed with any other races and I dont quite get why people look or act in such a jealous enraged way in some sense it really called ( torcher) and it be-on stopping not its actually going to a level that people are stopping in front of people home and making them feel like they are being spot lighted before the whole town or something of that sort . What give people the right to torcher another human being is (Lies) and (Deciet) people are being mislead not only by chuirches but but Big time governmant as well it old and out of date people should try and stick together instead of bickering for the own well being instead of looking out for other.The World has taken a drastic change since the early B.C. and A.D.
