This whole thread is infinitely ridiculous. I thought I might read some intelligent commentary (or at the very least, amusing) regarding this story. Instead, I happen upon a sparring match. I have to say, I agree with freedom here (with the exception of bringing the non-issue of race into the equation). If you make an ambiguous statement like “it’s a privilege, NOT a right” and someone makes conclusions about it that are incorrect (which, in asking if the government was responsible for granting the right, would have been my conclusion also), then it’s your fault for not explaining yourself. Granted, you don’t have to, seschris, that is very clear. But, if it were me, I would have understood that freedom wasn’t trying to goad me into some awful conversation, but rather that he or she was trying to enter a healthy debate in a public forum. I would have explained that I believed god grants the privilege, and that maybe (since your point, seschris, is that not all people should be granted the privilege) god is fallible in this instance.
My point is, if you really didn’t want to be “bullied into submission,” you probably shouldn’t have continued to reply to freedom’s responses. In that alone, freedom won: he or she got you to respond (thought not in the way they wanted) to their (in truth, valid) questions.
