NFL Great Gene Upshaw Dies

August 21st, 2008

He was the controversial leader of the players’ union

Gene Upshaw
Gene Upshaw, an 11-time All-Pro NFL lineman and the executive director of the NFL players’ union, has died of complications from pancreatic cancer, The Associated Press reports. He was 63. A longtime on-the-field force for the Oakland Raiders and Los Angeles Raiders, Upshaw was also the longest-tenured labor leader in sports. But it was in the latter job that drew the most criticism, as many players often contended that Upshaw was not as effective as he could have been in fighting for the rights of players, particularly those of older players, who had sacrificed their knees, necks and neglected families for the sake of the league. Critics noted that many of those older players have suffered life-altering ailments from their football days, a time before lucrative salaries and pensions, and should be better compensated. Upshaw was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Terri, and sons, Justin, Daniel and Eugene Jr. Click to send condolences.

My condolences first go out to the Upshaw family. Mr Upshaw was one of the greatest offensive lineman that has suited up. He and Art Shell together were the BEST guard and tackle tandem in pro football history. And me being from Pittsburgh and a diehard Steeler fan I witnessed great battles with the Raiders in the 1970″s. And believe me, mr Upshaw and mr Shell were true warriors. That is how I will remember Gene Upshaw.

My condolences go out to the Upshaw family but for the masses watching are you noticing all the famous deaths that are happening? People dont just die, GOD calls you home and just like many of you who know when a higher power calls you home it is either for a good or BAD reason, I am not stating which was his reason but try to understand what times we are in, whether you want to believe or not, notice how many of these celebrities are in key parts of our so called famous society.

I was saddened to learn the unexpectant and shocking news of Gene Upshaw’s passing. I met him over 30 years ago (late 1970s) when he played for the Oakland Raiders. He was an active member of the downtown Oakland YMCA where I worked. Gene was always very nice to me and never expected to be treated like a big time, celebrity football player. During those days, he was just one of the guys who came to the gym to workout. I am very proud to say I had the opportunity to personally know him–long before any controversial or negative labels that he was unfortunately given later during his life. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. Gene, rest in peace. I believe you are now in a much better place.

To the players, NFL families and friends my condolences go out to the family of one of the greatest offensive lineman in the game. I am a die hard RAIDERS fan and grew up watching and learning about commitment to excellence, and he and the RAIDERS organization where about that. But as we all know we all have to past that way, and GOD is still in control. i lost my father early in the year but he is now among the truly great players of all time, and I know they are talking football for this season. May GOD grant the family PEACE & BLESSING

My condolences to his wife and kids. He was one of the greats. As a kid in the 60’s, when my friends and I would play football - on offense I’d pretend I was Chuck Foreman, on defense I’d pretend I was Gene Upshaw.
God bless.

Eugene Upshaw was one of my heros when I was growing up. I wanted to play left guard like him. I had an oppurtunity to meet him one time at a football camp back in the late 70’s. His age of 63 same as his jersey number. I have all the respect and Love in the world for him I wish his family well. God Bless!

Tarris said on August 22nd, 2008

Sad to hear about the death of Gene Upshaw. Being a true Steeler fan from the 70’s you can understand how I felt about the Raiders, however Gene Upshaw’s contribution to the game of football cannot be overlooked. My prayers are with the family.

It’s hard to loose people we love and we need the love of God to come forth more in times of crisis and tragedy moments. May everyones families and loved ones be in the power and will of God. If there’s anything I can do, let me know, my email is queenlove93@yahoo.com. I know what it feels like to loose someone, I lost my brother Brian Frederick, who was in his early 20’s when he died and we are still in need of investigative help to see what happened and to bring to justice any conspiracies that have been covered up.
