NFL Great Gene Upshaw Dies
August 21st, 2008He was the controversial leader of the players’ union

Gene Upshaw, an 11-time All-Pro NFL lineman and the executive director of the NFL players’ union, has died of complications from pancreatic cancer, The Associated Press reports. He was 63. A longtime on-the-field force for the Oakland Raiders and Los Angeles Raiders, Upshaw was also the longest-tenured labor leader in sports. But it was in the latter job that drew the most criticism, as many players often contended that Upshaw was not as effective as he could have been in fighting for the rights of players, particularly those of older players, who had sacrificed their knees, necks and neglected families for the sake of the league. Critics noted that many of those older players have suffered life-altering ailments from their football days, a time before lucrative salaries and pensions, and should be better compensated. Upshaw was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Terri, and sons, Justin, Daniel and Eugene Jr. Click to send condolences.

My condolences go out to the Upshaw family but for the masses watching are you noticing all the famous deaths that are happening? People dont just die, GOD calls you home and just like many of you who know when a higher power calls you home it is either for a good or BAD reason, I am not stating which was his reason but try to understand what times we are in, whether you want to believe or not, notice how many of these celebrities are in key parts of our so called famous society.
My sincere condolences go out to the family of Mr. Gene Upshaw. He was trulu a trail blazer in the game of football. You are in my prayers
I was saddened to learn the unexpectant and shocking news of Gene Upshaw’s passing. I met him over 30 years ago (late 1970s) when he played for the Oakland Raiders. He was an active member of the downtown Oakland YMCA where I worked. Gene was always very nice to me and never expected to be treated like a big time, celebrity football player. During those days, he was just one of the guys who came to the gym to workout. I am very proud to say I had the opportunity to personally know him–long before any controversial or negative labels that he was unfortunately given later during his life. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. Gene, rest in peace. I believe you are now in a much better place.

To the players, NFL families and friends my condolences go out to the family of one of the greatest offensive lineman in the game. I am a die hard RAIDERS fan and grew up watching and learning about commitment to excellence, and he and the RAIDERS organization where about that. But as we all know we all have to past that way, and GOD is still in control. i lost my father early in the year but he is now among the truly great players of all time, and I know they are talking football for this season. May GOD grant the family PEACE & BLESSING
