Nigerians Demand Apology for District 9 Film

district 9

Leaders of an African nation have sent a letter to Sony executives demanding an apology for the way Nigerians and other Africans were depicted in District 9, one of this year’s blockbuster summer movies.

From the Associated Press

“Information Minister Dora Akunyili has asked movie houses in the capital of Abuja to stop screening “District 9″ because the South Africa-based sci-fi movie about aliens and discrimination makes Nigerians look bad.

We have directed that they should stop public screening of the film,” she said. “We are not happy about it because it portrays Nigeria in bad light.”

Nigerian officials are offended by the barbaric and cannibalistic behaviors in the film portrayed by Africans.  As of today Sony officials have not responded to the letter.

While the movie was released in North America in August it was released in Africa a few days ago.  The objections to the film are growing as a Facebook Group, Nigerians Offended By District 9, has more than 630 members

The founder of the group also created a video explaining his cause.

I think Nigeria is doing the right thing. I am glad they are doing it because media companies like Sony have made buffoons and minstrels out of the African diaspora for too long. More power to Nigeria for their good work.

They’re a little late for demands aren’t they?!

You people are cry babies!

David you are very stup*d to call us cry babies. I am not Nigerian but a proud African. We are sick and tired of western media/companies portraying us in a bad light all the time. Africans demand justice and by God we will get it. We are tired of being exploited for monetary gains. African will unite and the rest of the world will kneel in our presence.

BET should apologise too. I remember watching Hell Date on two different were they were making fun of Nigerian’s. Once on the newer episodes (with a fat man depicting a Nigerian Chauvinist where he was the hell date). Then in a newer episode when one of the hell dates stated that Nigerian’s are crazy. I was offended as I am of Nigerian decent.

Barry, David does not understand that his race came from ours and that the whole human race originated in Africa. The Nigerians are correct in what they are doing. As all Africans in the diaspora really understand that we are all on the same page with this opinion, and people like David (the global remnants of racist colonialist attitudes and USA confederates) David and his ilk are realizing the power of the African diaspora as a Kenyan sits in what his thought was his personal whiteman only whitehouse. The power of the original race of man only increases while David’s feels that the whiteman’s power is waning. More power to Africa for speaking her mind.

I saw this movie and I agree that they showed the Nigerians in a negative way. They made it seem the aliens were put their because The US didnt want them. Then they said they assimelated to the surroundings and the people. And all they would eat was cat food and the Nigerians were using the aliens for monetary gains. Bull S–t movie all around. The movie industry offended me as an African American citizen. I actually couldnt believe what I was seeing. This movie was sooooo wrong on sooooo many fronts…so so wrong

You are cry babies. How many movies don’t place America in a bad light or other countries in similar positions and you don’t hear a “DEMAND” for apologies. It’s a movie, get over it.
