N.Y. officer kills self after fatal stun gun case.

The New York City Police lieutenant who ordered another officer to fire a stun gun at an emotionally disturbed man who fell to his death killed himself Thursday, The Associated Press reports. Last week, Lt. Michael Pigott (pictured on the right), a 21-year veteran of the police force, was stripped of gun and badge and given desk duty following the Sept. 24 incident that led to the death of Iman Morales, who tumbled 10 feet to his death as shocked onlookers witnessed the tragic event. Morales’ mother had summoned police, saying that her son had threatened to kill himself. When officers arrived, Morales fled naked and perched himself atop a 10-foot window ledge. He then began to jab at police with an 8-foot fluorescent light.  Pigott then told an officer to zap Morales with a 50,000-volt stun gun, which sent the 35-year-old man lunging to the ground like a missile. A man below captured the unfortunate incident on a video recorder, who posted it on the Web. News stations have been showing the tape over the past few days. Pigot apologized, saying “I am truly sorry.” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly expressed condolences to the family of Pigott, who was to turn 46 the day of his suicide, saying that Pigott had served with distinction.

KMONEY, you give me the impression that if you could, you would rid the world of those who are mentally ill. God forbid should you have a child. I would hate to think what that child would have to endure under your care.

I hope all mental facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, will never employ you to work in their facilities.

As one post stated, no telling how many wrongful deaths was committed by this Lieutenant. He took that young man’s life and turned around and took his own. That young man was crying out for help. Apparently he took matters into his own hand and decided this young man didn’t deserve to live. His life was just as important as his and yours and mine and anyone else for that matter.

I’m sure by him giving the orders to stun this young man tormented him night and day. I, for one, hope they will go back and re-investigate all his cases he was involved in. He has been doing things like this for some time, but it’s a shame he is not here to face his consequences.

There are alot more cops that need to do the same thing.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for mental illness and unless you have money, hospitals won’t take you in for more than 24 hrs. (e.g., Oakland, CA) before releasing you back out into the general population. So, if you’re mentally ill or retarded and homeless, you’re SOL. God Bless those families that have to deal with their own mentally disturbed kin. I know it’s not easy!

Some cities (e.g., Baton Rouge, Louisiana) will put you in a State mental hospital when their local hospital wards are full. If only other cities could be so charitable to help out people and their families in distress, we wouldn’t have such tragedies. Did the policeman receive any counseling? Or was his ass just chewed out for being stupid! 2 deaths that didn’t need to be taken…

WHERE IS MY COMMENT.

Sounds like both men needed MENTAL help prior to this incident…I think more Cops than would like to admitt need not even be on our streets because of mental issues…whether it be depression on Comic Book Hero Syndrome (as I like to call it) they are human too and they treat other citizens/civilians like they are disposible toys in a game call street life….some of then get off by harrasing innocent people (unproportionately black males) aggrivating good black boys sometimes to the point of being parinod to even walk the streets….This is a travisty. But a true reflection of the Mindless and Sencesless dealings in Police and Society today….sad

This is truly an all around tragedy. Police officers need more training on how to deal with the mentally ill. I feel bad for the police officer and his family. I also feel for the mother who called police to help her with her son, but now he’s dead. I will keep both familes in my prayers.

he made a mistake and couldnt deal with it. Its sad that everyone is so against the people who risk the lives and make impossible decissions everyday for us. He felt bad give him a break it was hard for him. It was the wrong call and he knew it, only after it was over. God help them both

It’s a shame, that a man in distress, was mistreated and then forced to die………….all b/c of an idiot behind a badge! We may never know what drove the victim to the ledge that day, but we do know who pushed him over it. The officer was bold enough to use the taser, but not bold enough to face the consequences of it. I feel the office got just what he deserved…the death sentence that he gave to the victim. God bless the family’s of both.

Another cowardly act. Although I do not condone the police officers decision to use the taser on an innocent disturbed man, standing naked on a ledge about to commit suicide, I feel the officer should have seeked some type of counseling to help him get through this. I just wonder, if this man would have been black would he have decided to take his life….May his soul rest in peace and may the family of both deceased find strength and faith in our heavenly father to overcome this tragedy.

God cannot do away w/the whole race and that is why He sent His son.

Condolences to the Morales family and also the officer family. It takes a real man to say ” I am truly sorry”.

Kmoney are you an offspring of Adolf Hilter?

Keely Chow Said on

Kmoney, even baseball players have children out-of-wedlock. Just ask Chipper Jones. Everytime a football player or a basketball player has children out-of-wedlock, we always say something, but when a baseball player has a child out of wedlock, we don’t say anything because the NFL and NBA are predominantly black while MLB is predominantly white.

I guess they didnt think to put on of those thick mats that firemen use down before anything happened. IF they stunned him he would have fell and not hit the pavement. It’s very clear that officers need more training in situations like this. Why wouldn’t they think that a man wouldn’t fall after being tazed. you can’t control your body after that. I just think it was a dumb move in general and he deserved to get his badge taken. I don’t think he had to go and kill himself though.

lanesia Said on

Wow, I totally take back my words on him from the previous post on this story. A lieutenant should know better! Now, we have two deaths behind someone’s senseless thought of act.

I wish I could have pulled the trigger!!!

david,

when he starts to “do away with the whole human race” he needs to start with your mother and father first for having you!
