I think that “Mutt” remark was more about Obama easing the tension about race than about insulting bi-racial people. He’s trying to get people to lighten up about this race mess. I love brother Barack Obama, but my only criticism of him is that he referred to his self as a “mutt”. I find that offensive to our community. He needs to stay on message as a dignified Ambassador. I’m sure no one would appreciate it if we referred to Frederick Douglass as a “mutt”. Barack did appoligize to Nancy Reagan when he mispoke, though I don’t expect an apology about the offhanded “mutt” joke. I just hope that some how he gets the message from many of the public that the “mutt” comment is unexceptable and not funny. Just this week I had to defend my five year old grandson (in kindergarden), because the teacher poked fun of his being slightly over weight. Let’s continue to build self esteem, so that starting from the young on through to the Golden Years we can all feel proud.

Why should he have to apologize for making fun of himself? It seems like some people are so sensitive when it comes to race that they can’t take it when people poke fun of themselves. And rahbuba , a teacher making fun of a five year old’s weight isn’t the same thing at all. If the teacher would had poked fun of his (or her ) own weight, then it would be more relavant.

Obama has respect for his elders, an apology was appropriate. I respect Nancy Reagan because she was a loyal friend to John McCains FIRST wife, and shunned him after he left her.

Everything Obama says will be scrutinize so he needs to be very careful as to what he says in particular to anything that can be misconstrued. I am not saying that he is going to be a perfect President; but don’t make inappropriate lame jokes. Barack has been campaigning for two years and every time he said something off the wall it was made a big deal. He is now our President; and I hold him to the highest position in the land and I expect more from him. President Obama need to eliminate the jokes from his speeches.

I agree with Vane. When we say we can be whatever we want, that’s true. But not just because we’re Black and white people owe us, but because with work and a change of attitude, we can overcome the obstacles. Look at all the leaders in our history and in our community. Yet we still dwell on negativity and bitterness and usually find fault in them instead of learning from them. We quickly find fault in the same people who help to change the attitude toward our culture, who show us a path of success that is proven. I don’t understand that. We now have one of us as the President of the United States…. and there are still people on this forum that still don’t get it. These are the same people holding us back who confuse “sell-out” with “personal and cultural growth”.
