Obama Blasts Bad Hip-Hop Images

June 30th, 2008

Women-hating, money-glorifying lyrics are not positive forces, he saysObamaSen. Barack Obama, whose wide-ranging musical tastes include hip hop, took a swipe last week at the less than savory manifestations of the popular genre. “I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics,” the Democratic presidential nominee said in his highly publicized interview with Rolling Stone magazine. “It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves.” But Obama, who if elected in November would become the youngest president in history, added that hip hop has also been a positive force in America. “I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music,” he said, referring to hip-hop moguls Russell Simmons, Jay-Z and Ludacris” as “great talents and great businessmen.”

He is right, I’m 29, and the industry has filtered all positive rap out by shelving the music. Using the excuse it won’t sell is BS, people like what sounds good, period! Content doesn’t matter to most people. Since the Suits in the industry only allow this Gangster Prison mentality over the airwaves, our culture has reflected this smoking mirror, making it our own as if it was the truth. I think we should boycott the industry’s SPONSERS until it changes!

Lavette said on June 30th, 2008

I agree with Obama and I stand behind him 100%! Our children is our future and what way to reach them but through music! Children love to sing along with the lyrics or portray themselves as a rapper or singer, as well as do the newest dances. So I really do think music should have some positive quotes or encouraging thoughts besides her butt is big and I got a lot of money and I’m going to make it rain on her!

Us as black Americans needs to do better!

I agree 100% with Barack. I would be nice if some hip hop artist actually agreed with him too. Instead they get pimped out by the labels that own them to bring back the mone….ex. 50, lil wanye, bow wow, g-unit, david banner, etc.

Barack is right on target. Hip hop and rap is ok to an extent as long as it does not degrade our beautiful women.

seschris said on June 30th, 2008

I agree with Senator Obama, hip-hop is an art form. Like most things in life there is the good and the bad. But at it’s core, hip-hop has been a positive force of expression for an otherwise ignored segment of American society.

I wonder what would happen if all inner-city schools required classical music to be piped into all classrooms all day every day….to have these kids immersed in really wonderful soothing music. I truly believe you would see a change in behavior. Music appreciation classes changed my life and musicologists testify to the effectiveness of using clasical music to calm children. Worth a try?????

I’m in agreement with Stephani…..Mr. Obama has a right as a government official and a parent to address the negatives of rap music in terms of the lyrical content….There are good rap music with positive & upbuilding story lines & there should be more of them such as the need for strong family bonds, higher learning in terms of encouraging our children to further their education by attending college & graduating w/an B.A., B.S., M.A., or even a Ph.D. degree—-we should tell our children ‘the skies the limit’ & they can do and be anything they want…..Look at the prime example—–MR. BARACK OBAMA himself!!!!!

Toooooooo many of us have an excuse for everything! Obama has shed light on what these producers have been settling for and peddling on the airwaves/internet for years. Yes there are execs who basically put artists in a choke hold concerning what is artistic and what sells. But producers (waaaaayyyyy more so) have more clout than artists, by far. Yet they push alot of the garbage thats out there. PRODUCERS!!!!! A hot one can make a series of hot careers manifest. Yet the easy road is taken, hence music thats hot today and completely forgotten in a year or two, forget about five. Thats why not too many rappers today can make claim to classics. Look at the musical terrain of the last 7 - 10 years. Like I said, some garbage!!! Thank goodness for people like Jay-Z, Outcast and Mos Def, to name a few!!

Hip-hop music is entertainment, and should not even be a political issue. Don’t like it? don’t listen. Worried that your children will be negatively affected by the graphic lyrics? Be better parents and control what your children listen to, because you cant expect others to do it for you. We see violence, drug use, women degraded in movies every year in movies and on TV, and only hip-hop music is constantly blasted for it.

I have been producing music over the last few years and the lyrics that I promote are ones that either tell a story, talk about our plight (America) or talk about relationship. I try to write and promote something other than the negativity that has been out here too long. If it sounds good then it will sound. I am an old school rapper that has been producing with a new school flair. Obama, your right on point. By all means tell your story, how you struggled, came from so called nothing and became something with your music. Yes, these are truly stories of trumphant. You encourage, inspire and are power of examples of winners.

However, for those who use their music just to exploit, to send our negative message, to degrade the female, and promote the mentality of Willy Lychn **%~?%, just to make a buck. Well, just know this, nothing last for ever, and your days will be numbered, and you will be just a faded memory.

I love rap and hiphop. It started with my generation. It’s here to stay. Just like everything else Rap and Hiphop will evolve. Nothing stays the same, everything is subject to change, and there are no exceptions to the rules.

That& #8217;s something to look forward to. I’m sure when this music does change , all those Willy Lychn Niggers who benefited, will not be able to raise to meet the new changes, and you know that saying, If you can’t put up, then you will have to shut up.

Ebony Rogers,
Yes, I did make grammatical errors while I was typing my last comment and believe me that was only because I was angry at the moment. Furthermore, I was being sarcastic in a lot of what I said, if you hadn’t noticed. Perhaps you should reread my comment and take that into consideration. In addition, I am a strong believer in the Lord Almighty and his Son, Jesus Christ, so do not question my Christianity. Yes, God makes the heart beat, the birds sing, the sun shine, but that was not in the context of which I was speaking. The comment was strictly relating to Good Ol’ Shucky’s comment about Blacks being stupid. Again, maybe you should reread. And just so you know, I have won awards and several honors of recognition for my writing skills. Moreover, I have severly raised the bar of excellence for African-American women by graduating college, law school and passing the Bar the first time all by the age of 25. I also am one the few African-American females who is practicing law with my own firm at my current young age of 26. I think you should stop judging people until you know. I am very involved with children organizaions and donate regularly to such, so againg do not judge me. Perhaps it is you that needs to reevaluate herself. I am preparing for the 2nd Coming, but until then I am still human, bound to err, but, still on the mission to stand up for my people. Try it sometime honey!

Obama is right. Our young children are growing up listening to music that down grades our culture and women. The rappers can still sing their songs but use postive words instead of negative words. Our kids are now wearing their pants below their but cheeks and they think it is stylish because they see the rappers doing it. If the rappers would work together with other black role models that are trying to portray a positive image you would see less black males in jail and more living a postive life. Let us work together to change our culture and train our young black men to be better citizens and stay out of jail.

I totally agree with Obama, it’s gotten to the point as to where I just listen to old school hip-hop now. Back then, all of the artist had their own style of rapping, they were distanguished from one another. Today, everyone is talking about the same subject, bling, b*tches, money, etc. No one is actually talking about trying to come up in the hood, the struggles of the ghetto. They are proud to say that they’re ghetto, but not saying anything about how they’re trying to improve their lives or their community. Basically it all comes from what the white man (record lables) want to sell. They figure, we black people don’t want to do nothing but sling drugs, steal from each other, shoot each other, be lazy and not look for real jobs. This is their view of us, I am sick of it. It is time for a change here in America, it’s time for us black people to stand up and let these white people know that they built this country on the backs of slaves and other minorities, now it our time to run this country. We can not f*ck it up no worse that Bush has done already. We just got to remember where we came from and where we want to go.

BET represents MY culture and the things I like to watch and listen to. If people don’t like it let them change the channel.

There are 4 or 5 BET channels that offer something for everyone. Freedom of choice is what our country is about. Don’t limit my choices because I’m BLACK and some politico running for office thinks HE knows what’s best for ME. That’s my choice.

DON&# 8217;T MESS WITH MY BET, I LOVE IT JUST THE WAY IT IS. I Get my BET on TV, on the internet and on my cell phone.

True ghetto dwellers don’t have computers. Stop the myth — you’re not trying to “hear it how you lived it” because you’re not living it. The problem is that most young Black people think that Blackness is the ghetto fantasies that most rap is portraying. If rap were truly about the ghetto it would talk about the teachers, preachers, and people who help others in the ghetto; it would talk about single fathers and mothers who go to work everyday from the ghetto; it would talk about High school graduations, strong marriages, and Grandparents holding it down in the ghetto. The fact that it only talks cartoon gangster stuff shows it for the minstrel show that it is.

You didn’t hear Kurtis Blow or Chubb Rock or Dana Dane or Whodini using the profanity or degrading women as some of the music does today. You CAN sell records without all of that mess…so that excuse needs to go out the window… And these acts have been performing for 20 years and they are still making money…Can these rappers today say that they will still be in the business selling their product 10 or 20 years from now?

I’m not American so Hip Hop and Rap are not major parts of my life. However, both genres of music are present in the media here in the Caribbean and as a teenager, I find the shallow lyrics repulsive. I have absolutely no room in my heart for the measure of vulgarity and materialism portrayed by so-called “musicians.”

Hip-Hop is only entertainment. If you don’t lie it, listen to Disney. And for anyone to say Hip-Hop is Black music is stereotyping, because Hip-Hop is music and regardless of your race, you can listen and be involved.

I can see where the future pres. is going with this. I understand that there are lyrics that are degrading to women and a lot of money worshiping. But in the same token you can make a career as a rap mogul and business man if you play your cards right. Right? I dont know I’m a little off on this one. All this talk about hip hop is very draining. I’m a big fan of both rap and hip hop and yea there’s a difference. (my old heads know this). ANd yes a lot of the information in hip hop and rap has influenced me. I still took the guidance of my paretns and instilled all that in my life. And I turned out ok. Guess what i’m tryna say is parents take control of our kids. And even if thats not your child you can still be a parent. And this is coming from someone who is not a mother.

I agree with Obama for sure….Hip Hop is an Art…but, some of it is just unnessesary redrick…and is only allowed to make it to the public ear because, just like drugs it knumbs the black community and causes death images to subliminally enter into the minds of the black community….then killing can be glorified in the minds of poor and even suburan black youth….

I love Hip Hop when it reflect Unity and Knowlege about Black History…also some of it Edifies Black Youth to have Hope for better life….Jesus would not have a problem with that kind of Hip Hop in my opinion….

I am glad Obama has such a balanced perspective of Hip Hop and is not just closed minded because of the Bad Hip Hop that is out there….

I remember when rap music was so much fun to hear and enjoy. I come from what they call today ol school. And the images of rap or hip hop artist then had much more substance than some of the artist you hear today. For example: look at the group Public Enemy they were socially conscious and had an awareness of what was wrong with the American society when it came to inner city life or politics. You barely heard them use derrogatory statements about women or talk about money as those it was the only way you can feel good about ones self if you had any. And the break through girl group Salt and Pepa. Though some of their lyrics were border line riska you never saw them as I remember exploit themselves in the way some of these female artist in videos do today. It might as well be porn.

Plain and simply there should be some kind of positive message in it whether it’s a rapper or singer promoting themselves, their situation, or speaking on the problems of the world. Not talking about super soaking a *%@ or any other negatives stereotyped perception that others try to associates us with. Like I was saying I work with independent rappers and singers and they were raw until I tried to instill more positives in them. Some of them still have some of it in them and and use some reference and profanity but it’s no where near how they were when I first started working with them. It won’t change until the writers and producer step up with some positive guidance.

How can these young rappers think that what they are saying, doesn’t have an effect on the young people that listen to their music. You are bright. And you can produce a music that we all can listen to and enjoy. Don’t listen to the person who put your music out there tell them what you want to sing or say. You can do it. I know that you can.God bless you and develope a new stand this year that. We all have a responsibility to look out for our children because Lawd knows everyone should not be parents! What is more influential to them (other than their parents/teachers) than TV and RADIO??

McCloud said on June 30th, 2008

Someone finally stepped to the plate…I Love Abama. I am a 45 year old single parent. And it is true, we learn a lot through music. I remember when rap first came out in the early 80’s (violence over the radio, I call it) I use to listen to it and stopped immediately, because I saw nothing but young people listening and the killing began, mainly in Washington DC (early and mid eighties), correct me if I’m wrong. I had a child that I would not allow him to listen, turned out to be a pretty nice kid. Now he is seventeen, he listen to it and he likes it, some days he acts stupid, but most days he doesn’t. The point is it starts at home, talk to your kids while they are young and you as a parent be in charge of whatever they do, it will be instilled in them for all eternity. I know, it’s called home schooling, if you don’t talk to them the negative streets and music do, than what do you think will be the outcome. Praise God first because he is worththy to be praised.

See, we as artist “write what we feel” as they say. So is it that 80 something% of rappers feel negativity, feel that money, cars, and woman are what the world is made of. We as Blacks in America is just making one big excuse for not being as “sucessfull as Whites”, so we put more effort into being ghetto, rude, and what Capone was, Gangster. Sen. Obama along with everyone else has an argument, but what we all need is a reality check, we need Jesus.

Elle A said on June 30th, 2008

Its not the point of raising your kids and keeping them away from bad images or lyrics…the point is WHY would today’s hiphop artists WANT to continuously curse and curse and degrade and degrade. There is a better way of relaying to the lister how you lived and there is a better way to give us graphic images other than the constant B*tches and H@es and F*%k this and F*%k that lyrics that are being pumped through our airwaves. The thing about movies is that it can somewhat be controlled but music is always on the radio. You don’t what you’re gonna get! I can’t enjoy a nice BET awards program without SOMEONE deciding that its OK to curse the entire performance knowing FULL WELL that there are children watching and perhaps in the audience. What makes it OK to do this? Our parent/parents/guardians raised us with SOME form of respect even through the trying times that some of us are unfortunate to have been a part of. If not, I truly feel sorry for your upbringing. Its gotten to the point now where we may have been willing to accept it in maybe one song even two but the entire album? And what is up with the young boys (they can’t possibly be men yet)going around blasting this vulgarity as LOUD AS POSSIBLE. HipHop is a beautiful artform that has unfortunately been dragged through the sewers. It is sometimes mistaken for Gangsta Rap I guess because now the lines are so blurred you can’t tell which is which. Obama is making a very valid point. Those who do not find anything wrong with it are probably those who don’t mind cursing in front of their grandparents…so sad to say.

Here is the problem I have with making political statements like these but not finishing the statement. Obama seems like he is acknowledging the mistakes of the AA community but no one else’s. If he can talk about our problems, be courageous and talk about the prejudice people who hate him simply because of the color of his skin. I have a feeling that he doesn’t say a lot of things because he CAN’T not because it’s not true. We apprieciate that he is the Democratic nominee, but that doesn’t give him the right to harp on what is wrong with our community only. From my vantage point, he has had to skate around ridiculous accusations from the white community, but he refuses to address the stupidity of those racially challenged people. “He is a muslim” is just one example. Make sure you shine a light on all injustice. That will impress me. As far as what he commented on, that may be, but the responsibility always lies with the parents. What are you doing to uplift your girls? What have you told your boys about respect of themselves and others? Are you invloved with the community to some extent, letting children know how you think and feel about current events? What are the actions of the adults in the area? If the adults are irresponsible, more than likely the children are. It’s how I relate to my children that will make all the difference in thier lives and though gangsta rap is prevalent in society, it has never been a statement to my household. We have to watch out for the complacency of allowing another entity to raise our households.

This generation is breeding more dummies than we can afford. cousin Jeff Johnson should’ve had Barack and Michelle on the HIP-HOP vs America as a guess speakers also maybe they could’ve talked some sense into those, such as David banner and Delicious who feel that their work isn’t the blame for kids actions today. It’s all about being responsible and I applaud his decision to say something about a subject that has long been ignored or simply swept under the rug. As a parent of a 16 and 11 year old I’d appreciate more positive Hip Hop or Rap for them to listen to. When Will Smith (the Fresh Prince) came out with “clean” rap most rapper distanced themselves from him and when he entered the acting arena they somewhat disowned him, but now they’re striving to be just like him. While we have freedom of speech in this country and rappers have the freedom on how they can express themselves I’m thankful that America has a Presidential hopeful that has shown some responsibility to our youth.

The thing that (especially our young black men), has always got to keep in mind, is the “integrity,” that “they must” always promote, for our culture, our young “black” minds, regarding the “images” that for “better or worst,” and in this case, it seems to be for worst, that can and do, sometimes more harm than good. Can not listen to lolipop the same after they allowed Weezy to uncover some of his nasty lyrics on BET Awards.

I completely agree and this is the first time I ever have. Think about it though…if a Republican said that…hed be hated all the more. Because its Obama its okay though. I dont understand that but hes right. GEORGE BUSH SAID THE SAME THING!

UGLYMAN said on July 1st, 2008

I agree; but my vocabulary is a bit off when it comes to words like “misogyny”; what does that word mean? When you run for president, does it affect your vocabulary in such an intellectual way that george bush couldn’t catch on?

smagic2000 said on July 1st, 2008

It would take some mentally enslaved person to attmept to discredit what Obama said. He told the truth. Here is the catch if the music of hip hop artist is not purchased the music will totally disappear. I challenge each person that is a true lover of hip hop to flood the phones and faxes of the record companies and radio stations to show unity to hear the type of music that you want to hear.

Jessica said on July 1st, 2008

Zemry is the ONLY one who got this completely correct! There are black ppl whove decided to come out and motivate themselves to do well and they have. Others dont. Why not? Is it really that hard? No. Stop making excuses. Trust in God and he will direct thy path. God said hed never give you anything you cant handle! And I agree halfway w/ Mohammed. Obama is half and half w/ EVERYTHING! He says hes Christian but doesnt believe in half of the things the Bible says-has to swear on the Torah but not the Bible. HE likes the artists but says to stop the music. THAT DOESNT MAKE SENSE! And claims to be American but refuses to say the pledge!!!

AA said on July 1st, 2008

wow jessica!!!
Barack is a Christian he believes in the bible and by you judging him by saying he does not you are falling under the grace of god. Barack is patriotic and all this bull that people try to spread about is just making the political water murky and spreading fear. And where the hell does it say he swears on the torah.
What he said about the industry today is correct we need more positive uplifting artists in hip hop and in rap music.

Markeis Townsell said on July 1st, 2008

It’s funny you all agree with Mr. Obama, but I but you still listen to what he is speaking against. The only reason this type of music sells is because you all buy it. If we didn’t buy it, it would be on the shelves also. Stop talking the talk and start walking the walk. “KING”

Jessica said on July 1st, 2008

Thank you Barack O’bama for not being able to speak the truth. He is going to be a great leader for everyone. Maybe he will help the black community get past all of the negative images we see everyday and help us move in a different direction. Even if he does not get elected president (which I believe he will) he has done more than enough to set a postive image for African American men.

why yall all dissing hip hop, rap was real good for like over a decade and think s cant be hot forever like in any other music gerne, it just goes in cycles like other music, and yeah obama has an opinion but many other people been saying the same stuff for years, hip hip has a right to evolve everbody needs to quit hating all the time and think more intelligently on the issue and say things like we can improve lyrics and stuff but dont put pressure on anyone to make good music it must happen naturally, and if yall hat rap so much dont buy it dont be a part of the hip hop community and just live your life without even talking about rap

Yes. I agree with Obama all the way. Hip hop does not need woman haters or money hungry n****s. Hip Hop needs to discuss the concerns of our culture and our country. So Chris, grow the F**K up and don’t let G-Unit brainwash that rotten brain of yours.

to our shortcomings. Its time to Man and Women UP. Absolutely Nothing, is going to be given to us especially CHANGE. It has to be taken or made on your own. Just as Bill Cosby did a couple of years back. Pulling back the covers and exposing us so we can really see how far we have yet to go. I agree with Sen. IN MANY WAYS I THINK THAT HIP HOP IS VERY DEGRADING TO WOMAN AND YOUNG GIRLS, BUT THERE’S ALWAYS TO SIDES TO A STORY THESE MALE RAPPER’S ACTUAL LIVE THEIR MUSIC AND THEY ACK AND PERFORM WHAT THEY SEE. THEY NOT ACTUALLY SSAYING EVERY WOMAN IS A SLUT OR GPLD AT THE SAME TIME THEY HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN OF THIS GENERATION AND THE GENERATION TO COME. THESE CHILDREN NOW ADAYS DO WHAT THEY SEE AND DON’T THINK TWICE OF THEIR ACTIONS…..

Yeah OBAMA is totally right but the brain washing has been set in the minds of a generation of youth. It will take more efforts to de-condition the mentality, the course of this type of behavoir and thinking than the industry, big business and society is willing to spend promoting it.
It’s truly a shame that our own people are getting rich by defaming our own people. Good music and a good msg can still sell. You just need to be creative silimar to that of Kanye who isn’t street but he’s still hoodR 30;̷ 0;… ;… ..Hip Hop ain’t going no where just realize who you are as a person and make good decisions and don’t get caught up in what you/they see and here.

Barack is on point and to the ignorant ones, especially the clown that said Barack wouldn’t know good music if it bit him…… I’m saying it and I dare someone to say something different but hip hop as we know it is dead the art form is dead and the entertainment value is gone… And I’m like the sister that said she was showing her age I grew up on Run-DMC, Eric B. and Rakim, The Blast Master KRS-ONE, Big Daddy Kane, Salt n Pepa, Heavy D and The Boyz, and of course the four father like Afrikka Bambata and the Zulu Nation, Sugar Hill Gang and cant forget Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five…… The so called hip hop of today is so whack that the rappers should be ashamed of themselves, don’t get me wrong Jay-Z, Nas, Kayne & Common are all great but where does Hip Hop go after that….. People are riding LiL Wayne like he’s the second coming his music sucks, I sorry but to these new artist study your craft….. Study Paid in Full by Eric B. and Rakim, study By All Means Necessary by Boogie Down Productions, study Long Live The Kane by Big Daddy Kane…… Yall have a lot to learn

Lets look at everyone that has a part in the blame .When is someone going to hold “our” media outlet as equally responsible for “rap” bieng the be all & end all of “our” ills. The company whose name is on this blog is equally responsible for the distribution of this “bad rap”. We just had mass viewing of an award show people.Take a look at the programming on the station & tell me if it`s living up to the idea of entertainment for mature & young people of our ancestry. We live in a capitalist society & to qoute part of a rap lyric which fits perfectly here:”if it dont make dollars it dont make sense”….Don`t talk about it walk about it!!!!!!!

Stop blaming hip hop for the problems of the world. Hip Hop didn’t start it, hip hop just brought it out. The degrading of woman have been going on way before hip hop was in the game. the only difference is it was done inside of the home instead of in public. these rappers and many other’s are just bringing it in the light.

CHRIS- SHUT THE F**K UP U SHOULD KNOW BETTER THAN TO BLAST BARACK ON HERE….U WILL GET SHUT DOWN…N E WAYS ENOUGH ABOUT IGNORANT A** PEOPLE, BARACK IS 100% RIGHT…SOME HIP HOP ARTISTS (I AM NOT GOING TO SAY ALL BECAUSE SOME ARTISTS ARE MORE POSITIVE THAN NEGATIVE) PORTRAY NEGATIVE AND FAKE IMAGES OF THEMSELVES AND THE LIVES THEY LIVE…THESE ARTISTS GET IN THESE VIDEOS AND TRY TO “FLOSS” LIKE THEY GOT ALL THIS MONEY WHEN THE HOUSE THAT THEY ARE SHOOTING THE VIDEO IS BEING RENTED FOR THE DAY…THE CARS ARE A RENTAL…THE JEWERLY IS LENDED TO THEM FOR THE DAY…AND THE LIST GOES ON…AND ALL ALONG THE WOMEN THAT ARE IN THESE VIDEOS ARE BARELY GETTING PAID TO PARADE AROUND THESE FOOLS CAUSE THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO PAY THEM!!! MUSIC ARTISTS PAY FOR THEIR OWN MUSIC VIDEOS SO YOU KNOW THE ONES THAT JUST CAME OUT WITH ONE HIT ARE TAKING THE EASY WAY OUT TO CUT COSTS!!!!….AND FYI- DON’T TRY TO GET ANYTHING FROM THE FAMOUS JACOB THE JEWELER ANYMORE CAUSE HIS A** IS LOCKED UP FOR THE NEXT 2 AND 1/2 YEARS!!! WHY SHOULD ANY OF US RESPECT THESE ARTISTS IF THEY DON’T EVEN HAVE ENOUGH RESPECT FOR THEMSELVES OR ANYBODY ELSE TO PRODUCE MORE TASTEFUL VIDEOS…SOME HIP HOP ARTISTS ARE VERY MATERIALISTIC…YOU CAN ONLY RAP ABOUT THE MONEY, CARS AND H**S TYPE OF THING FOR SO LONG AND THE S**T GETS OLD….THINK OF SOMETHING ELSE TO TALK ABOUT AND IF YOU CAN’T COME UP WITH LYRICS THAT MAKE SENSE THAT PEOPLE CAN TRULY RELATE TOO THEN THEY SHOULDN’T BE ARTISTS AT ALL NOT EVERYBODY HAS WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TRUE SUCCESS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY!!!!!

I agree. I would love to hear PE on the airwaves again. The suits have succeeded somewhat “dumbing down” hip hop. Some of it is fun but the rest needs to get a reality check and see that there is more to life than bling bling, Phantoms, and half-dressed women. Hip Hop has done quite a bit for American culture. It should not settle for the hand being dealt to it now. I love Game’s new song paying homage to the men and women who paved the way. Party on but party with a purpose!!!! Peace. We love you Obama you have a job ahead of you stay on point!!!

dear friends do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world, so there must be a spirit that will cause deception so that people will fall away from the truth and believe a lie, and thats were we will find arguments, quarrels, jealousy,
lovers of there own kind…
its not the music, its the spirits behind the music.

VI Lady said on July 9th, 2008

It is amazing how we (Black People) complain about injustices done by “The White Man” and yet everyday we (Black People) do unjust things to our own race: Killing, robbing, raping, neglecting (reference to parenting), etc. I grew up hearing, “It takes a village to raise a child”, but now I am hearing that it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that their child grows up with good values. As far as I am concerned, the whole world influences our behavior, values, character, morals, etc. We are all responsible, to some degree, for the choices we make in life, but those on the sidelines, who sit and watch or encourage wrong also are responsible. We are all here to help each other, not to sit and say, “well I didn’t tell Mr. Smith’s son to smoke crack. His parents should have told him not to. ” These are selfish, ignorant and unconcerned remarks. The people who say these things have a chunk of coal for a heart. Does a table not need the support of all the legs to stand? Remove one leg and see what happens. Then remove another leg and see what happens. This is what is happening to the world today. People are making excuses instead of looking the problem dead in the face and calling it for what it is. Remember these: Someone fed you before you could feed yourself and someone carried you before you could walk alone. We are all guilty when we expose children to improper things and behaviors, whether they are our kids or the neighbors kids. There is definitely a lack of RESPECT for women today. A lot of people, inlcuding RAPPERS, display this DISRESPECT for women. The people who don’t recognize that there is a problem with an “entertainer” who enjoys making money from disrespecting women and the negative way it affects our kids, then they are selfish, ignorant and miserable creatures. PEACE PEOPLE!

naudie said on July 11th, 2008

THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HIP-HOP FOR REAL ARE THE ONES THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. THE WOMEN IN THE VIDEOS ARE HOES AND WHATEVER ELSE THE SAY. I DON’T GET OFFENDED WITH THE WORDS THEY USE, BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT REFERRING TO ME. GO UP PEOPLE IF YOU DON’T LIKE DON’T LISTEN TO IT.

Nathaniel said on July 18th, 2008

I do agree with Eric, because music is simply entertainment. I agree that there is far too much negativity being influenced in our hip-hop/rap, but we also need to teach our children that not all music, no matter how often music in general is almost in the 1st person perspective, is true. To some, music is just another way to say something, but to people like me, it’s also just entertainment. I will say this though: I have seen a little bit of change, but not too much (Rick Ross with a love song in “Here I Am”, Weezy giving his opinion in “M isunders toodR 21;, etc.).
