Obama Blasts Bad Hip-Hop Images

June 30th, 2008

Women-hating, money-glorifying lyrics are not positive forces, he saysObamaSen. Barack Obama, whose wide-ranging musical tastes include hip hop, took a swipe last week at the less than savory manifestations of the popular genre. “I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics,” the Democratic presidential nominee said in his highly publicized interview with Rolling Stone magazine. “It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves.” But Obama, who if elected in November would become the youngest president in history, added that hip hop has also been a positive force in America. “I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music,” he said, referring to hip-hop moguls Russell Simmons, Jay-Z and Ludacris” as “great talents and great businessmen.”

I agree with Obama because I’m a big hip hop fan but the music is getting out of hand…

Chris you still a spritual slave , sorry for you …

Mr. Obama is right some of the lyrics is awful and degrading to women and people of all color, just so much negative and gang banging and foul language what ever happen to the real music?

Eric Said on

Hip-hop music is entertainment, and should not even be a political issue. Don’t like it? don’t listen. Worried that your children will be negatively affected by the graphic lyrics? Be better parents and control what your children listen to, because you cant expect others to do it for you. We see violence, drug use, women degraded in movies every year in movies and on TV, and only hip-hop music is constantly blasted for it.

Those without sin cast the first stone, or haven’t Obama forgotten what is in his closet too?

Of course he’s right on sooooo many levels! This keen cultural insight on his part is soooooo important when it comes to how he perceives Americans across the board. However, I know some of you have such a f******g pee sized brain when it comes to talking about HIP HOP that this whole conversation is just above your head. Look at that fellow up above “Chris”. If Obama is a monkey than what are you a cockroach??? Get your head out of your a$$ please, for everybody’s elses’ sake atleast. HIP HOP just isn’t as intelligent, fearless, political, intstinctive and philosophical as it used to be. Its sooooo short yellow bus these days. REALLY!!!!!

I feel the same as Mr. Obama. “Some” Hip-Hop artists project negative images. The youth of today need positive role models in their lives not huge gold, diamond wearing, pants sagging, sneaker conscious individuals who glorify drugs, sex and money. Its an insult to our ancestors who have given up their lives for a betterment of our future. All of you gangsta rappers(wannabee entertainers), please do us all a favor and change for the better. Thank God for Ne-Yo. A brother with “CLASS AND STYLE”. I’m prayn you will rub off on the others.

Well said Sen. Obama!! I think this man is BRILLIANT, and remains true to himself REGARDLESS of people’s opinion of him. He has his own personal SWAGGER that will definitely DO US ALL SOME GOOD! He is EXACTLY what this country has been missing!

Don’t worry Chris, the koolaid kids only put what they want to on this blog- As we stated, those without sin cast the first stone, Obama? NPC

Chris why call another brother a monkey? The white guy in Georgia sold t-shirts with a monkey and Obama’s name beneath the image.Do you feel like the white man feels about blacks? Your type of thinking is the reason so many of us suffer financially, emotionally, and every other way. Even if you don’t agree with him, do respect him. He is no worse than John McCain and all of the white men before him. Give the brother a chance.

Ok now first off don’t come off quoting scripture until u live a perfect life that no one can live. No one is perfect but at least he is trying to make a change. We as christians need to stop talking about what others don’t do and look at what he is doing. So far us christians aren’t doing our job. Language is a part of everyones being. God gave it to us and we have polluted it. I use words to that I shouldn’t but I don’t look at no ones faults without taking my own advice and correcting me. So don’t just criticize him get after John McCain as well cuz he will make ur life as well as the world miserable while one man who is making history is making a difference for the PEOPLE. Get READY FOR CHANGE. Or do u believe?

Tonni Said on

I agree with you Eric, some of these need to raise their kids and let music and/or tv do it. I’m sick and tired of almost everyone blaming Hip-Hop for the way their kids and acting. Raise your kids.

I don’t know why this board allows other members to accidentally see other people’s contact information, but that’s not cool. For example, i just had ‘kUpkake’s info on my page. And someone used ‘chris’ username to write a fake post.

BET, something has to be done to prevent this.

THANKS OBAMA MAYBE YOU CAN SEND A MESSAGE TO THE BLACK FUTURE TO BE A BETTER FORCE IN AMERICA OTHER THAN GANSTERS,PIMPS,HOES,RAPPERS,AND BALL PLAYERS.BLACK FOLK NEED TO WAKE UP READ ISAIAH 19 I HOPE THAT WAS NOT US WHEN HE SAID A CRULE LORD WILL RULE OVER US AND WE WILL HAVE A PERVERSE SPIRIT.

I am definitley in agreement with everyone else’s assessment. The music at time puts us in such a negative light. I have been producing music over the last few years and the lyrics that I promote are ones that either tell a story, talk about our plight (America) or talk about relationship. I try to write and promote something other than the negativity that has been out here too long. If it sounds good then it will sound. I am an old school rapper that has been producing with a new school flair. For an example visit my myspace page under edward.jenkins38@yahoo.com to see that there are some that there are some who are trying to put out something different

I agree with obama 110% becuz he is brillant man…but only this statement is only a opinion… he entitled to his opinoin…but also say that hip hop shouldn’t be blame for the U.S problem I think the gov’t if in for blame…simply becuz they are the enforcers and they regulators… so don’t knock the “rappers” for tryn 2 make money… blame the gov’t…
