Obama Blasts Bad Hip-Hop Images

June 30th, 2008

Women-hating, money-glorifying lyrics are not positive forces, he saysObamaSen. Barack Obama, whose wide-ranging musical tastes include hip hop, took a swipe last week at the less than savory manifestations of the popular genre. “I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics,” the Democratic presidential nominee said in his highly publicized interview with Rolling Stone magazine. “It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves.” But Obama, who if elected in November would become the youngest president in history, added that hip hop has also been a positive force in America. “I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music,” he said, referring to hip-hop moguls Russell Simmons, Jay-Z and Ludacris” as “great talents and great businessmen.”

Obama, your right on point. By all means tell your story, how you struggled, came from so called nothing and became something with your music. Yes, these are truly stories of trumphant. You encourage, inspire and are power of examples of winners.

However, for those who use their music just to exploit, to send our negative message, to degrade the female, and promote the mentality of Willy Lychn ~%#~*?, just to make a buck. Well, just know this, nothing last for ever, and your days will be numbered, and you will be just a faded memory.

I love rap and hiphop. It started with my generation. It’s here to stay. Just like everything else Rap and Hiphop will evolve. Nothing stays the same, everything is subject to change, and there are no exceptions to the rules.

That’s something to look forward to. I’m sure when this music does change , all those Willy Lychn Niggers who benefited, will not be able to raise to meet the new changes, and you know that saying, If you can’t put up, then you will have to shut up.

Ebony Rogers,
Yes, I did make grammatical errors while I was typing my last comment and believe me that was only because I was angry at the moment. Furthermore, I was being sarcastic in a lot of what I said, if you hadn’t noticed. Perhaps you should reread my comment and take that into consideration. In addition, I am a strong believer in the Lord Almighty and his Son, Jesus Christ, so do not question my Christianity. Yes, God makes the heart beat, the birds sing, the sun shine, but that was not in the context of which I was speaking. The comment was strictly relating to Good Ol’ Shucky’s comment about Blacks being stupid. Again, maybe you should reread. And just so you know, I have won awards and several honors of recognition for my writing skills. Moreover, I have severly raised the bar of excellence for African-American women by graduating college, law school and passing the Bar the first time all by the age of 25. I also am one the few African-American females who is practicing law with my own firm at my current young age of 26. I think you should stop judging people until you know. I am very involved with children organizaions and donate regularly to such, so againg do not judge me. Perhaps it is you that needs to reevaluate herself. I am preparing for the 2nd Coming, but until then I am still human, bound to err, but, still on the mission to stand up for my people. Try it sometime honey!

Real Black Girl: Who says that Chris is a brotha? A lot of white people that have ill intentions are on this site perpetrating as to be one of us! How many of us go around calling Obama ‘monkey’? That is the medias’ perspective and white folk have taken that and like to make light of it. And BTW-I am in total agreement with Obama. I haven’t even listened to the radio in over three years because I do not care for the direction of the music. The internet is where I get my R&B, Neo-Soul, House music and so forth.

Obama is right. Our young children are growing up listening to music that down grades our culture and women. The rappers can still sing their songs but use postive words instead of negative words. Our kids are now wearing their pants below their but cheeks and they think it is stylish because they see the rappers doing it. If the rappers would work together with other black role models that are trying to portray a positive image you would see less black males in jail and more living a postive life. Let us work together to change our culture and train our young black men to be better citizens and stay out of jail.

John F. Kennedy was the youngest President in histoty, at 43 years of age. Born in November 1917 elected in 1960 do the math. Barack will be 47 when he takes office. Born August 1961.

CagoPierre Productions Said on

Right on target Obama! We should be role models to our future!

Prof Said on

Just a little addition to Van’s comment (the first one). Obama turns 47 in August, and Kennedy became President at age 43. Kennedy was the youngest person elected President. However, Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest President when he became President at age 42 after the assassination of McKinley.

SHARONDA IS ONE OF THOSE WHITE PEOPLE WHO IS ON THIS BOARD WITH ILL INTENTIONS. SHE IS NOT A BLACK PERSON SHE POSTS STUPID AND RACIST COMMENTS THAT COULD NOT POSSIBLY HAVE COME FROM A HALF WAY INTELLIGENT BLACK PERSON. SHE IS THE WORST KIND OF POSTER BECAUSE SHE JUST SPEWS HATE AND IGNORANCE WITH NO DIRECTION OR LOGIC AND VERY LITTLE CONNECTION TO THE STORY. WATCH HER POSTS, NOBODY SPELLS THAT BAD OR EVEN SPEAKS AS BAD AS SHE DOES. SHE IS A WHITE PERSON PRETENDING TO BE AN IGNORANT BLACK RACIST PERSON.

you are too funny!!! of course when someone is cowardly enough to consistently post negative racial stereotypes degrading blacks on BET blogs on a daily basis (under the guise of “opinion”), I imagine that someone would be very concerned that internet security is tight, right?

I totally agree with Obama, it’s gotten to the point as to where I just listen to old school hip-hop now. Back then, all of the artist had their own style of rapping, they were distanguished from one another. Today, everyone is talking about the same subject, bling, b*tches, money, etc. No one is actually talking about trying to come up in the hood, the struggles of the ghetto. They are proud to say that they’re ghetto, but not saying anything about how they’re trying to improve their lives or their community. Basically it all comes from what the white man (record lables) want to sell. They figure, we black people don’t want to do nothing but sling drugs, steal from each other, shoot each other, be lazy and not look for real jobs. This is their view of us, I am sick of it. It is time for a change here in America, it’s time for us black people to stand up and let these white people know that they built this country on the backs of slaves and other minorities, now it our time to run this country. We can not f*ck it up no worse that Bush has done already. We just got to remember where we came from and where we want to go.

Obama is 100% right, hip hop did’nt start out
this way, mostly the songs were fun or had a
message and stimulated the mind, what happen ?

Juice Said on

Eric, hip-hop is more that entertainment. The reason why don’t like don’t listen don’t, because you hear it everywhere you go once you step outside your home. Like any ball game you attend, doctors office, dept stores, ever elevators.
So something must be said or done to protect these
young ears at there. Like the late 80’s & 90′S
they need to make the record companies make a
clean & explict version. More rappers talk about
life on the street. 90% of us lived or living now.

I think we all agree about Chris. Not the brightest one in the bunch. But there is always going to be some dummy trying to push our buttons we just can’t give into it.As far as Obama is concerned. He is right on the money.I’m in my late 20’s and the game has changed.Artists that have been in the game and have saying it for years now from Common to Nas to JayZ.Its nothing new.Hip hop was the ish’ but now its turned into a joke. We have artists (use the term loosely)like Soldier boy, Hurricane Chris sounded like idiots on the mic.Now I’m not saying that all hip hop is like that we still have real artists like Common,Mos Def,The Roots,Kanye making good music. But the record co’s are no idiots they know what makes $$$ & this is it.So until the artists make a stand & we do too as consumers this is what we will be stuck with. Sorry.

Seschris: cowardly?? How does one be brave in expressing the truth to a group of people? Going out with banners stating facts/statistics? That’s very smart there Seschris. I know for sure that you know my email address, and i know yours. BET has made a mistake in allowing others to see poster’s contact info. That’s all i’m saying. That is wrong on many levels.
When i state things, i never mean it regarding EVERY single Black person. That would be ridiculous, and incorrect. Every rule has an exception. Every group has good, and bad individuals. I am talking specifically about the subgroup that commit so much of the nation’s violent crimes (Black men ages 20-28). I know many brilliant Black people…as i know you’re smart as well. All of my previous comments, and every comment i ever make is not geared towards EVERY SINGLE person in any group…it’s the large/small subgroup.

Obama, Can’t have it both ways. On one hand he puts down the music (Hip-Hop genre)and than he praises the artists and producers. Then he praises the music and puts down the artists and producers.

Which is it?

BET represents MY culture and the things I like to watch and listen to. If people don’t like it let them change the channel.

There are 4 or 5 BET channels that offer something for everyone. Freedom of choice is what our country is about. Don’t limit my choices because I’m BLACK and some politico running for office thinks HE knows what’s best for ME. That’s my choice.

DON’T MESS WITH MY BET, I LOVE IT JUST THE WAY IT IS. I Get my BET on TV, on the internet and on my cell phone.

The only thing I would change are some of the shows from a “quality perspective”. Who produces their stuff? There must be some good programming people out there they can hire.
