Obama Blasts Bad Hip-Hop Images

June 30th, 2008

Women-hating, money-glorifying lyrics are not positive forces, he saysObamaSen. Barack Obama, whose wide-ranging musical tastes include hip hop, took a swipe last week at the less than savory manifestations of the popular genre. “I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics,” the Democratic presidential nominee said in his highly publicized interview with Rolling Stone magazine. “It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves.” But Obama, who if elected in November would become the youngest president in history, added that hip hop has also been a positive force in America. “I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music,” he said, referring to hip-hop moguls Russell Simmons, Jay-Z and Ludacris” as “great talents and great businessmen.”

I agree with Obama for sure….Hip Hop is an Art…but, some of it is just unnessesary redrick…and is only allowed to make it to the public ear because, just like drugs it knumbs the black community and causes death images to subliminally enter into the minds of the black community….then killing can be glorified in the minds of poor and even suburan black youth….

I love Hip Hop when it reflect Unity and Knowlege about Black History…also some of it Edifies Black Youth to have Hope for better life….Jesus would not have a problem with that kind of Hip Hop in my opinion….

I am glad Obama has such a balanced perspective of Hip Hop and is not just closed minded because of the Bad Hip Hop that is out there….

Go ‘Bama!!!

Go on Barack! Stand up for what is right, our people need to hear this. I agree with him 100%, give credit where it is due and try to educate those who are ignorant and wish to remain ignorant that way for the love of money nd greed.

Our children and people as a whole need to hear and instill POSITIVE lyrics, images and words of encouragement in all music.

If you’re angry to see a therapist, don’t put your anger upon the innocent of the next generation.

Praise God from whom ALL BLESSINGS FLOW!

I agree with Obama for sure….Hip Hop is and Art and just like any art there is good Tasteful and bad taste art….I am glad he is not close minded towards Hip Hop because of the BAD stuff….but everything in music is a reflection of society anyway…so maybe we all need to look at ourself CHRISTIANS included and see what we can do to change the atmosphere….

What is great about it is that he is addressing the issue.

Chris is white boy , who is racist and hates the position of Obama trying to smear his name this is a common trend now on different message boards white boys are pulling. So don’t listen to him

Rappers of today need to bring back the 70-80’s format of HIP-HOP where entertaining was the focus giving positive messages also displaying talents/skills being creative making people jam having fun with beats, rhymes , dancing giving people quality shows. money, sex & drugs been around in hip-hop for many years now, BRING the NEW SUBJECTS out back into the main stream, Bring back GROUPs like Run-dmc, Fat boys, juice crew, BDP,Steady B,UTFO, roxanne shante just to name a few our kids could listen again and have fun like we did growing up!!!!

I remember when rap music was so much fun to hear and enjoy. I come from what they call today ol school. And the images of rap or hip hop artist then had much more substance than some of the artist you hear today. For example: look at the group Public Enemy they were socially conscious and had an awareness of what was wrong with the American society when it came to inner city life or politics. You barely heard them use derrogatory statements about women or talk about money as those it was the only way you can feel good about ones self if you had any. And the break through girl group Salt and Pepa. Though some of their lyrics were border line riska you never saw them as I remember exploit themselves in the way some of these female artist in videos do today. It might as well be porn.

I think he is some what right but not all rap is bad people just dont take the time to listen to it.

Plain and simply there should be some kind of positive message in it whether it’s a rapper or singer promoting themselves, their situation, or speaking on the problems of the world. Not talking about super soaking a %@* or any other negatives stereotyped perception that others try to associates us with. Like I was saying I work with independent rappers and singers and they were raw until I tried to instill more positives in them. Some of them still have some of it in them and and use some reference and profanity but it’s no where near how they were when I first started working with them. It won’t change until the writers and producer step up with some positive guidance.

Leave Chris alone…LOL!…at least he admitted his wrong and publically apologized….forgive the nutty guy and move on Ya’ll.

Ya’ll leave Crazy Chris alone…bless his heart…at least he was big enough to admit his fault and apologize publically….next time he will just have to stay on the meds….

All I have to say is finally we will have a President who actually listens to hip hop. No matter what artist it is he likes rap music. GO OBAMA 08′

stanyslaw Said on

Hip-hop needs to take it back to the 70’s-80’s where talent/skills, creativity and pure entertainment for listeners of all ages. Today sex, money and drugs turned it to adult content as if thats all we know well it’s 2008 that style needs to be changed back to beats, dancing, lyrics on a positive note letting artist re-appear into the GAME

I am sad that we as a people don’t see our selves in a diffrent light wake up people! The world is a place for all of us. We don’t need to hear rotten music every day. we need to hear about how we in America are making our life better, how young people are growing up as decent people, how they are educating themselves, making a change from the wasteful life that they are living. These young people use the sayings to bully their peers when they speak to them, when they want to shot some one. How can these young rappers think that what they are saying, doesn’t have an effect on the young people that listen to their music. You are bright. And you can produce a music that we all can listen to and enjoy. Don’t listen to the person who put your music out there tell them what you want to sing or say. You can do it. I know that you can.God bless you and develope a new stand this year that. You can do it.

Obama is right and thank God he stood tall without worrying about the Hip Hop folks saying mean things. We as consumers MUST take a stand and STOP buying that music. I know it isn’t easy because I find my 25 year old son has it in his car but when I get in the car, he as the cds out or the radio turned off. It is the mass media company’s making money off of those who purchase the cds. So STOP young people…under 40! STOP BUYING IT!

Obama is on point. Some rap (as is other music) ignorant, disrespectful and DEGRADING TO OUR BLACK QUEENS. Chris, is obviously the product of this or a white boy fascinated with our blackness thus he finds himself on BET. We all have a responsibility to look out for our children because Lawd knows everyone should not be parents! What is more influential to them (other than their parents/teachers) than TV and RADIO??

McCloud Said on

Someone finally stepped to the plate…I Love Abama. I am a 45 year old single parent. And it is true, we learn a lot through music. I remember when rap first came out in the early 80’s (violence over the radio, I call it) I use to listen to it and stopped immediately, because I saw nothing but young people listening and the killing began, mainly in Washington DC (early and mid eighties), correct me if I’m wrong. I had a child that I would not allow him to listen, turned out to be a pretty nice kid. Now he is seventeen, he listen to it and he likes it, some days he acts stupid, but most days he doesn’t. The point is it starts at home, talk to your kids while they are young and you as a parent be in charge of whatever they do, it will be instilled in them for all eternity. I know, it’s called home schooling, if you don’t talk to them the negative streets and music do, than what do you think will be the outcome. Praise God first because he is worththy to be praised.
