Obama Blasts Bad Hip-Hop Images
June 30th, 2008Women-hating, money-glorifying lyrics are not positive forces, he saysSen. Barack Obama, whose wide-ranging musical tastes include hip hop, took a swipe last week at the less than savory manifestations of the popular genre. “I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics,” the Democratic presidential nominee said in his highly publicized interview with Rolling Stone magazine. “It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves.” But Obama, who if elected in November would become the youngest president in history, added that hip hop has also been a positive force in America. “I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music,” he said, referring to hip-hop moguls Russell Simmons, Jay-Z and Ludacris” as “great talents and great businessmen.”

Who makes all the money in this country
See, we as artist “write what we feel” as they say. So is it that 80 something% of rappers feel negativity, feel that money, cars, and woman are what the world is made of. We as Blacks in America is just making one big excuse for not being as “sucessfull as Whites”, so we put more effort into being ghetto, rude, and what Capone was, Gangster. Sen. Obama along with everyone else has an argument, but what we all need is a reality check, we need Jesus.
Its not the point of raising your kids and keeping them away from bad images or lyrics…the point is WHY would today’s hiphop artists WANT to continuously curse and curse and degrade and degrade. There is a better way of relaying to the lister how you lived and there is a better way to give us graphic images other than the constant B*tches and H@es and F*%k this and F*%k that lyrics that are being pumped through our airwaves. The thing about movies is that it can somewhat be controlled but music is always on the radio. You don’t what you’re gonna get! I can’t enjoy a nice BET awards program without SOMEONE deciding that its OK to curse the entire performance knowing FULL WELL that there are children watching and perhaps in the audience. What makes it OK to do this? Our parent/parents/guardians raised us with SOME form of respect even through the trying times that some of us are unfortunate to have been a part of. If not, I truly feel sorry for your upbringing. Its gotten to the point now where we may have been willing to accept it in maybe one song even two but the entire album? And what is up with the young boys (they can’t possibly be men yet)going around blasting this vulgarity as LOUD AS POSSIBLE. HipHop is a beautiful artform that has unfortunately been dragged through the sewers. It is sometimes mistaken for Gangsta Rap I guess because now the lines are so blurred you can’t tell which is which. Obama is making a very valid point. Those who do not find anything wrong with it are probably those who don’t mind cursing in front of their grandparents…so sad to say.

STOP POSTING COMMENTS WHEN YOU HIGH MAN!
YOU MAKE NO SENSE!!!
Niecie … don’t get it twisted I am very proud of what you have done for YOURSELF. But there are MANY African American women that have done and doing what you have done …my niece and 4 of her friends have done the exact thing.
As a professional you should no not to quote stats unless you KNOW for sure and there is no way of really knowing now is there …do you thinl it comes on the news EVERYTIME and African American get a law degree?
i think not. keep up your good work …but i also feel unless what you are and have done directly helps your people …it does nothing for them at all you just end up working for them. If you are on your own cool …i guess but I’m not big on lawyers …I have yet to find one that any values whatsoever …including my niece. She thinks that paper the ”monsters” gave her makes her better …it does one thing …it made her more like them. IT NOT WHAT YOU DO ITS WHO YOUR ARE …and your email ..you are just bragging about the ”respect” you BROUGHT from the monsters …it really means NOTHING BABY GIRL …IT REALLY DON’T IN THE GRAND WAY OF THINGS ..But i could be wrong
It’s funny that BET would even have the courage to put this on their site. The most “positive” song I’ve heard on BET is that I.N.D.E.P.E.N.D.E.N.T and even then it still talks about a woman ” takin d*** ” and all this other madness.
My question is- Why the excuss about what won’t sell, if you put good music out here it would sell. Stop putting that BS and you don’t have to worry about what would sell. Look at the song that’s hot now- “looking boy”, it’s a group ribbing on one another, it’s blowing the charts. Now tell me what won’t sell!!!!!!
all theses negative comments, get a life!!! no really, get a life!!!!
obama, your comments are appreciated!!the comments that are made about women,
especially calling women ho’s!! our children listen to black men who is surpose to encourage is really down casing women, especially women of color.
obama, what i like about what i hear and see the most is your willness to make things work.
that is a sign of not only a good leader but a man that has some kind of relation with our GOD.
I’M VERY ENCOURAGED BY YOUR WIFE!!
Here is the problem I have with making political statements like these but not finishing the statement. Obama seems like he is acknowledging the mistakes of the AA community but no one else’s. If he can talk about our problems, be courageous and talk about the prejudice people who hate him simply because of the color of his skin. I have a feeling that he doesn’t say a lot of things because he CAN’T not because it’s not true. We apprieciate that he is the Democratic nominee, but that doesn’t give him the right to harp on what is wrong with our community only. From my vantage point, he has had to skate around ridiculous accusations from the white community, but he refuses to address the stupidity of those racially challenged people. “He is a muslim” is just one example. Make sure you shine a light on all injustice. That will impress me. As far as what he commented on, that may be, but the responsibility always lies with the parents. What are you doing to uplift your girls? What have you told your boys about respect of themselves and others? Are you invloved with the community to some extent, letting children know how you think and feel about current events? What are the actions of the adults in the area? If the adults are irresponsible, more than likely the children are. It’s how I relate to my children that will make all the difference in thier lives and though gangsta rap is prevalent in society, it has never been a statement to my household. We have to watch out for the complacency of allowing another entity to raise our households.
He is totally right! I just heard one song , but T.I verse to Standing is pretty good. The flip flop to the legal sense. Hip-hop has been through some things ,along with black america. Men and women are both dependent on GOD.I told T.I. to snitch on me, and what was the information . The governor , mayor of any municipal corporation, district attorney, prosecuting attorney, city and state judges all a party to aggravated childmolestation, kidnaping, murder, conspiracy, civil rights, genocide. We were also using words to shot each other. We were prompting non-violence.I don’t know what he told ya’ll. We both were reporting terrorism , so I guess .I am a snitch too.So Mr. President Obama their it is, but I ain’t glorifying nothing negative except an HIV/AIDS test. Then as for mercer law school its on a board with the four cheif judges superior ,juvenile, state, and municipal court. Local radio station hip -hop didn’t issue no hit on me . It was ya’ll a party to the crime of slander from 1965 to now. I love my black kids. I put the rod to themout of love , and to teach them right from wrong . I refuse to let the system instruct me on displincing my childs. The same system suspects for aggravated child molestation-creulty to children-conspiracy child abuse-kidnapper’s-murderers’.
Maybe he was referring to
I’m intelligent
therefore i am always relevant
listen and allow me to enhance your own
word work out regiment
its true i love rap and i enjoy listening to it but its true i agree with him 101% everything he’s saying is true and something realy needs to be done about dat
I agree with Obama but there is still this issue it wont change unless we look at ourselves in the mirror and ask who am I you have certain females who judge a man on what he has music is just a way to express this issue I am an MC myself and when I hear songs that stress this issue it doesnt bother me because I know who I am I feel when we start acting more like women we will get the respect we deserve true you have the ones that may not know how to treat a woman because the were never taught so its up to us to mold our men I love HIP HOP its the air I breath and it can sometime get tooken in the wrong manner music has helped alot of people get out the ghetto and become very successful men N-E way to sum it up its a way of expression how you take it and what you get from it is on you but lets not forget its so powerful that one of our most talented rhymers (tupac)was took out the game because he had that thing that could touch the youth
I’m glad someone is talking to these senseless rappers about how they feed our children the wrong message about themselves. What the rap game portray about blacks affect me and millions of others in daily living. Heard to land a 6 figure job when a white person has the mind set of a black person having no etiquette or uses proper grammer or speaks proper english. This generation is breeding more dummies than we can afford. cousin Jeff Johnson should’ve had Barack and Michelle on the HIP-HOP vs America as a guess speakers also maybe they could’ve talked some sense into those, such as David banner and Delicious who feel that their work isn’t the blame for kids actions today. IT ACTUALLY IS PEOPLE IN ENTERTAINMENT! IMAGINE IS EVERYTHING NOT MONEY.
I pray that one day black people will finally get it together and unify so I can be proud of my black culture.
MY PEOPLE WE DON’T HAVE TO TALK SO RAW TO EACH OTHER! THIS IS JUST AN OPINION BASED BOARD! LADIES FORGIVE ME IF YOU THINK I AM PICKING ON YOU! BUT AS LONG AS YOU GUYS DANCE TO, STRIP TO AND ALSO BUY PLIES, WEBBY, LIL WAYNE NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE! IT AMAZES ME HOW MUCH SUPPORT SISTAS GIVE TO THE MUSIC THAT IS DEGRADING YOU.
IF WOMEN DON’T DANCE IN THE CLUB TO WHAT EVER SONG THE CLUB WILL NOT PLAY IT. IF YOUNG WOMEN DON’T REQUEST INDEPENT BY WEBBY ON THE RADIO THEY WON’T PLAY IT. MOST GUYS DON’T BUY BOOTY SHAKING MUSIC. IF A GUY PICKS YOU UP ON A DATE AND HE IS PLAYING SOMETHING YOU DON’T LIKE, I BET CASH MONEY HE WILL CHANGE IT. IF WOMEN DECIDED TO NOT TAKE ALL THEIR CLOTHES OFF IN VIDEOS THEY WOULD HAVE TO CHANGE TO STANDARD. POLO THE DON SAID IT BEST, IF WOMEN ONLY DATED DOCTORS AND LAWYERS, ALL MALES WOULD BE BUSTING THEIR TALE IN MEDICAL AND LAW SCHOOL. THAT IS JUST THE POWER OF A WOMEN.
JUST ABOUT EVERY THING A MAN DOES IS TO IMPRESS A WOMAN. MEN DO WHAT THEY ARE ALLOWED TO DO..TELL ME I’M LYING! HOW MANY SONGS TODAY TALK ABOUT A WOMAN IN THE CLUB, ON THE DANCE FLOOR, DROPPING IT OR ON A POLE? IT WILL NOT STOP ALL OF THE PROBLEM BUT IT WILL HELP I THINK. CAN’T BLAME IT ALL ON THE ARTIST!
i agree also. I odnt fill that he bad mouthed anyone somr rappers do go a little far but we have to remember we have the (FREEDOM OF SPEECH)
Fot those of you who have negative comments on Senator Obama’s comments all I have to say is “you’re entitled to your opinion”. It’s all about being responsible and I applaud his decision to say something about a subject that has long been ignored or simply swept under the rug. As a parent of a 16 and 11 year old I’d appreciate more positive Hip Hop or Rap for them to listen to. When Will Smith (the Fresh Prince) came out with “clean” rap most rapper distanced themselves from him and when he entered the acting arena they somewhat disowned him, but now they’re striving to be just like him. While we have freedom of speech in this country and rappers have the freedom on how they can express themselves I’m thankful that America has a Presidential hopeful that has shown some responsibility to our youth.
Obama my man tru stuff mann
whateva. you can’t criticize that aspect of hip hop then bigup jay z/ luda…they still rap about just that. but i guess 50 is the only negative aspect of hip hop.
this n ain’t no different
I agree 200%.
