Obama Blasts Bad Hip-Hop Images

June 30th, 2008

Women-hating, money-glorifying lyrics are not positive forces, he saysObamaSen. Barack Obama, whose wide-ranging musical tastes include hip hop, took a swipe last week at the less than savory manifestations of the popular genre. “I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics,” the Democratic presidential nominee said in his highly publicized interview with Rolling Stone magazine. “It would be nice if I could have my daughters listen to their music without me worrying that they were getting bad images of themselves.” But Obama, who if elected in November would become the youngest president in history, added that hip hop has also been a positive force in America. “I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music,” he said, referring to hip-hop moguls Russell Simmons, Jay-Z and Ludacris” as “great talents and great businessmen.”

i can’t produce for negative artist any more.

Jessica Said on

I completely agree and this is the first time I ever have. Think about it though…if a Republican said that…hed be hated all the more. Because its Obama its okay though. I dont understand that but hes right. GEORGE BUSH SAID THE SAME THING!

UGLYMAN Said on

I agree; but my vocabulary is a bit off when it comes to words like “misogyny”; what does that word mean? When you run for president, does it affect your vocabulary in such an intellectual way that george bush couldn’t catch on?

It would take some mentally enslaved person to attmept to discredit what Obama said. He told the truth. Here is the catch if the music of hip hop artist is not purchased the music will totally disappear. I challenge each person that is a true lover of hip hop to flood the phones and faxes of the record companies and radio stations to show unity to hear the type of music that you want to hear.

Jessica Said on

Zemry is the ONLY one who got this completely correct! There are black ppl whove decided to come out and motivate themselves to do well and they have. Others dont. Why not? Is it really that hard? No. Stop making excuses. Trust in God and he will direct thy path. God said hed never give you anything you cant handle! And I agree halfway w/ Mohammed. Obama is half and half w/ EVERYTHING! He says hes Christian but doesnt believe in half of the things the Bible says-has to swear on the Torah but not the Bible. HE likes the artists but says to stop the music. THAT DOESNT MAKE SENSE! And claims to be American but refuses to say the pledge!!!

AA Said on

wow jessica!!!
Barack is a Christian he believes in the bible and by you judging him by saying he does not you are falling under the grace of god. Barack is patriotic and all this bull that people try to spread about is just making the political water murky and spreading fear. And where the hell does it say he swears on the torah.
What he said about the industry today is correct we need more positive uplifting artists in hip hop and in rap music.

It’s funny you all agree with Mr. Obama, but I but you still listen to what he is speaking against. The only reason this type of music sells is because you all buy it. If we didn’t buy it, it would be on the shelves also. Stop talking the talk and start walking the walk. “KING”

Jessica Said on

Thank you Barack O’bama for not being able to speak the truth. He is going to be a great leader for everyone. Maybe he will help the black community get past all of the negative images we see everyday and help us move in a different direction. Even if he does not get elected president (which I believe he will) he has done more than enough to set a postive image for African American men.

why yall all dissing hip hop, rap was real good for like over a decade and think s cant be hot forever like in any other music gerne, it just goes in cycles like other music, and yeah obama has an opinion but many other people been saying the same stuff for years, hip hip has a right to evolve everbody needs to quit hating all the time and think more intelligently on the issue and say things like we can improve lyrics and stuff but dont put pressure on anyone to make good music it must happen naturally, and if yall hat rap so much dont buy it dont be a part of the hip hop community and just live your life without even talking about rap

Kimme Said on

I cant stand the use of the N word in hip hop. That is the ultimate self hatred that we as a people must eliminate.

Yes. I agree with Obama all the way. Hip hop does not need woman haters or money hungry n****s. Hip Hop needs to discuss the concerns of our culture and our country. So Chris, grow the F**K up and don’t let G-Unit brainwash that rotten brain of yours.

It was inevitable, the De-evolution of our race. Check out the walk and the broken dialect, mongoloid bound. Don’t want to emulate anyone that is going somewhere but praise that which keeps you bound (sound Familiar)Squabbling, over a comment that turns the light on
to our shortcomings. Its time to Man and Women UP. Absolutely Nothing, is going to be given to us especially CHANGE. It has to be taken or made on your own. Just as Bill Cosby did a couple of years back. Pulling back the covers and exposing us so we can really see how far we have yet to go. I agree with Sen. Obama been saying that for years, and attempting to make a change in my area. Make history in your area. Elevate and Educate. Peace

IN MANY WAYS I THINK THAT HIP HOP IS VERY DEGRADING TO WOMAN AND YOUNG GIRLS, BUT THERE’S ALWAYS TO SIDES TO A STORY THESE MALE RAPPER’S ACTUAL LIVE THEIR MUSIC AND THEY ACK AND PERFORM WHAT THEY SEE. THEY NOT ACTUALLY SSAYING EVERY WOMAN IS A SLUT OR GPLD AT THE SAME TIME THEY HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN OF THIS GENERATION AND THE GENERATION TO COME. THESE CHILDREN NOW ADAYS DO WHAT THEY SEE AND DON’T THINK TWICE OF THEIR ACTIONS…..

Ava Said on

Come on where is my post BET. I posted a response since yesterday.

Stan J Said on

Yeah OBAMA is totally right but the brain washing has been set in the minds of a generation of youth. It will take more efforts to de-condition the mentality, the course of this type of behavoir and thinking than the industry, big business and society is willing to spend promoting it.
It’s truly a shame that our own people are getting rich by defaming our own people. Good music and a good msg can still sell. You just need to be creative silimar to that of Kanye who isn’t street but he’s still hood…………..Hip Hop ain’t going no where just realize who you are as a person and make good decisions and don’t get caught up in what you/they see and here.
