Obama Monkey T-Shirts A Hot Georgia Item
May 16th, 2008But a major publisher threatens to sue the Atlanta-area bar that’s raking in cash
Scores of people have been protesting the sale of T-shirts, featuring the cartoon monkey Curious George eating a banana with the words “Obama ’08,” at a Georgia pub. But now the bar owner, Mike Norman is facing some new problems as the publishing company that owns the Curious George image is threatening to sue him. “We find it offensive and obviously utterly out of keeping with the value Curious George represents,” said Rick Blake, a spokesman for publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. “We’re monitoring the situation and weighing our options with respect to legal action.” Curious George, a popular character in children’s books for many years who now has his own television cartoon series. Blake said that he has not been in contact with Norman or anyone else selling the shirts, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Norman, who owns Mulligan’s Bar and Grill in Cobb County, told the newspaper that he got the T-shirts from someone in Arkansas. His establishment is known for the controversial, ultra-conservative political slogans it plasters out front. This week the number of people protesting the shirts, which they call racist, began to swell. Norman told the Journal-Constitution that while he recognizes the racist roots of the imagery, he has every right to portray Obama as a monkey if he likes. “We’re not living in the (19)40’s,” he said. “Look at him . . . the hairline, the ears — he looks just like Curious George.” One guy called him up and ordered a hundred shirts, said Norman, 63. This response is for Willie Jones, I did not live in the 60’s, nor was I born in the 60’s…..But I do know this you can do anything you want to do, If I did live in the 60’s I would have not went through the stuff that was going on then, for one how dare someone tell me I can’t use the same restroom or schools…etc. The bottom line is you guy’s allowed them to take advantage of you, you let them control you, it’s your own fault that you was in that situation. As a black woman, I’m not offended in the least. I think it’s really funny. Each time a white person makes a offensive remark, it makes me laugh, because they are beginning to show, (and I’m talking about the racist people), how fearful they are becoming of blacks. We are moving forward, and it scares them to death. Instead of being angry we should laugh each time. Because the more you protest something that is said by a racist devil, the more you feed their devil ego. The more they hunger to see you upset. You feed the devil when you do as he wishes. We need to smile more in their face. We need to continue to stand tall, we are at that point in our lives that we have prove that we can not be pushed over. We are a strong race of people, we have proved we can not be knocked down. So my people of all races that feel the devil is trying to knock us down, stand your ground and give them the biggest smile you can bring across your face. The devil will diminishes, and maybe try again in another 2000 years. And we will continue to move forward. Believe my people God is on our Side. PEACE!

The bar owner had the audacity to say that we’re not live in the 1940s. Well the history lesson here is if we were, then Obama would not be running for president. Black men in the South were being lynched by people like this bar owner. I hope the owners to the rights of this bar sue him to the point that his racist antics cost him his bar. SOme may say that seems kind of mean. Well racism has been the venom of this country far too long. And white people who thnk that they can just say and do anything to black people that they want.
