Praising Black colleges for their historic role in instilling hope and expanding educational opportunity for African Americans, President Obama proclaimed this week National Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Week. “This week, we celebrate the accomplishments of HBCUs and look to the future with conviction and optimism,” Obama said. “These institutions will play a key role in reaching our ambitious national education goals, including having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020. As our Nation strives toward this goal, we invite HBCUs to employ new, innovative, and ambitious strategies to help the next generation of Americans successfully complete college and prepare themselves for the global economy. During National Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week, we recommit ourselves to never resting until equality is real, opportunity is universal, and all citizens can realize their dreams.” The president noted that such luminaries as W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington, to Langston Hughes and Thurgood Marshall graduated from HBCUs before going on to shape the course of American history. “For generations, education has opened doors to untold opportunities and bright futures,” he said. “Through quality instruction and a personal commitment to hard work, young people in every part of our nation have gone on to achieve success. Established by men and women of great vision, leadership, and clarity of purpose, historically Black colleges and universities have provided generations of Americans with opportunity, a solid education, and hope.” For more than 140 years, HBCUs – situated in 20 States, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands – have served hundreds of thousands of students from every background, contributing to the expansion of the African-American middle class, the growth of local communities, and the nation’s overall economy, Obama said. “HBCUs have released the power of knowledge to countless Americans … and offer us a window into our nation’s past as well as a path forward,” he said.

Kudos to President Obama for acknowledging HBCUs. Our family has been recognized by BCU as a Total Family, all members are graduates of Bethune Cookman University. “Let’s Go Wildcat!”

Kudos to the Pres. He has acknowledged what I have always known as the truth, there’s nothing like the experience and education of an HBCU. I am a very proud graduate of NCCU, North Carolina Central University and will be sending my daughter to one of the 100+ HBCUs. As others have said, african americans need to support our HBCUs and stop sending our children to institutions that see our children as only a quota to fill, as well as our talented athletes. Bring that talent home. EAGLE PRIDE ‘TIL THE DAY I DIE!!!!!

This shows that even if President Obama did not attend an HBCU he still recognizes the contributions made by these institutions. Without HBCUs the black middle class would be significantly smaller. This was our opportunity to succeed in an environment where someone cared about your success. Perhaps his daughters might attend an HBCU. We know it’s all about exposure. I am a proud ‘76 graduate of Bethune-Cookman University located in lovely Daytona Beach, FL. GO WILDCATS!!!

I was fortunate enough to attend Bethune Cookman for one year and my remaining years at the great Howard University :) . Attending a HBCU was one of the best experiences for me. I thank President Obama for recognizing how strong HBCUs are for our community.

I attended Fayetteville State University to obtain a master’s degree in Special Education. I had some great professors. I really learned a lot while attending FSU. Because the clasess were smaller I was called by my name and not a number. I didnot have to wait in line and pick a number before I could speak with one of my professors. My daughter, Kiera is also attending Fayetteville State. She also, enjoy the fact that she is known by her name and not identified by a number. I attended a function at FSU during the summer and was touched by the fact that the professors knew Kiera not only as a student but knew her personally. This says something for a HBCU—the instructors learn the student as a whole. I feel sad when I hear people make statements like “if you attend a HBCU you will not get a good job” or “if you attend a HBCU you will not be able to integrate into the white society”—I am proud to say that I am a HBCU graduate and hopefully my daughter will be able to say the same. GO BRONCOS!!!!
