Obama Splits With Yet Another Clergyman

May 30th, 2008

The campaign cuts ties with the Rev. Michael Pfleger
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Thursday that he was “deeply disappointed” by a supporter’s sermon at his church that mocked Hillary Rodham Clinton, The Associated Press is reporting. The Rev. Michael Pfleger, a Chicago activist, also apologized for last Sunday’s sermon at Obama’s church, in which he said Clinton’s wrightpflegereyes welled with tears before the New Hampshire primary because she felt “entitled” to the Democratic nomination and because “there’s a Black man stealing my show.” In video circulating on the Internet, Pfleger said the former first lady expected to win the nomination before Obama’s sudden popularity. (See the video below) “She just always thought that, ‘This is mine. I’m Bill’s wife. I’m White.’ … And then, out of nowhere, came ‘Hey, I’m Barack Obama.” And she said, ‘Oh damn, where did you come from? I’m White. I’m entitled. There’s a Black man stealing my show,’” Pfleger said at Trinity United Church of Christ. He then went on to parody Clinton, sobbing and wiping his face with a handkerchief. “She wasn’t the only one crying,” he said. “There was a whole lot of White people crying.”Obama won the Iowa caucuses, the first contest of the nominating season, in January. Days later, Clinton’s eyes brimmed with tears and her voice broke as she talked with New Hampshire voters on the eve of the primary, which she won. In a statement in which he cut ties with Pfleger, Obama said, “As I have traveled this country, I’ve been impressed not by what divides us, but by all that that unites us. That is why I am deeply disappointed in Father Pfleger’s divisive, backward-looking rhetoric, which doesn’t reflect the country I see or the desire of people across America to come together in common cause.”Pfleger, the White pastor of predominantly Black Saint Sabina Roman Catholic Church on the city’s Southwest side, said he regretted his choice of words as he addressed the congregation of Obama’s church as a guest pastor Sunday. “These words are inconsistent with Senator Obama’s life and message and I am deeply sorry if they offended Senator Clinton or anyone else who saw them,” Pfleger said.Clinton’s campaign denounced Pfleger’s comments.”Divisive and hateful language like that is totally counterproductive in our efforts to bring our party together and have no place at the pulpit or in our politics,” the campaign said in a statement. Pflager previously defended the Rev. Jeremiah Wright when he was under fire for his fiery sermons. Obama recently broke with Wright, who had been his longtime pastor, after video of his sermons blaming U.S. policies for the Sept. 11 attacks and his calls of “God damn America” became fixtures on the Internet and cable news networks and created a political problem for the candidate. Pfleger, known locally as a community activist and organizer, was arrested in June 2007 with the Rev. Jesse Jackson during a protest outside of a south suburban Chicago gun shop. The criminal trespass charges were later dropped.

Uhmmmmmm, like it or not, that IS what she was thinking, she still thinks it and will keep thinking it even when he wins the whole thing. “She will be thinking because she is White, she will win” I would love for this to be a perfect world and a perfect America too! But it isn’t and that man said what Hilary and a lot of other white people are thinking, Hey, how is he winning he isn’t even White! We are making progress but this America isn’t that much different than the one 40 -50 years ago for lots of people. We need to keep pushing forward but don’t you dare think there are not alot of people thinking ill thoughts, he just happened to voice it. I know for political purposes he has to distance himself but come on . . . .

They pulling every trick in the book to try to destroy Obamas image. Let it go, he’s the nominee, deal w/it. I rarely see negative articles on Clinton & McCain, seems real funny to me. What does this preacher have to do w/Obama running for President, just like him wearing or not wearing a pin. Yall gots to do better

jenna said on May 30th, 2008

that is what i was thinking they pulling every trick in the book to make him look bad..he can’t be accountable for what every man says we have to look at Barack not his Pastor or a guest Pastor or any other pastor for that matter. i have visited churches that haven’t been politically correct and they sholdn’t be they are here to serve and uplift the Lord not running in any political race so please find something better than that…what u can’t lol nice try Barack is powerful and he has views that makes since for this day unlike i idiot president that we have today..good job Barack and keep up the good work..u don’t have to justify what anyone else said in a church it is a church….Obama 2008 yes it is a beautiful thing

Shun said on May 30th, 2008

Yes that is what she thinks, but we have to be smarter than that. We know they are now grasping at straws and will us the smallest thing to depict Obama’s character as someone he is not. The people that surround him should use better judgement because at this point in the race they are all under a microscope.

Hambone said on May 30th, 2008

It’s a shame that Obama has to distance himself from people who are backing him because White America dislike the truth! Both Rev. Wright and Rev. Michael Pfleger when, I believe, he himself agree with most of what both of them are saying.

Joy B./PA said on May 30th, 2008

I saw the vidoe this morning on the Today Show and I agree with everyone’s comments so far. That is how she feels and they are grasping at straws. I have to say that is was funny as hell though. It started my morning off on a funny note.

What kind of church does obama go to where the whole sermon is about Politics, those pastors need to stay in thier place!!!, they just should enjoy the collection plate money and preach the word!!.

Kareem said on May 30th, 2008

Focus on the things that unite us as a people not the things that divide us. We have to push past the past to get to a new revolutionary future. And guess what? …Yes, we Can!

First of all ANYTHING said by Barack Obama will be scrutinized more thoroughly than any white candidate. If Obama walks by something that goes wrong he will be mentioned along with the problem. The press made a big issue of Michele Obama saying she was really proud to be an american at this time,I do not see what the problem is,because as a african-american we were not really considered or treated like real americans.

BlackButtaFly04 said on May 30th, 2008

Does anyone remember hearing what Mr. McCain’s pastor said concerning Jewish people??? Of course you don’t because they swept it under the rug so fast you didn’t have time to listen. It really doesn’t matter who is elected into office. Because the person who is will spend most of their time cleaning up all of Bush’s mess they won’t have time to f*ck-up themselves.

This is the first election where the Reverends are center stage in the election process. I don’t see what the Reverends have to do with how the American people decides to vote. Father Pfleger is not running for a political office; Obama is. I think the media is biased and trying everything in their power to destroy Obama because they don’t have anything on him. I hope the American people can see through this foolish story. Hillary is only in this race to destroy the democratic party. She knows that she can’t win.

HOW CAN WE POSSIBLY BRING OUR NATION TOGETHER WHEN WE HAVE MINISTERS AT THE PULPIT MAKING HATE STATEMENTS? I AGREE WITH SENATOR OBAMA. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT SENATOR CLINTON HAD THOSE THOUGHTS IN HER HEAD. SHE HAS DONE MORE FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY THAN HALF OF US WRITING IN THIS BLOG. I CERTAINLY THINK THAT OBAMA IS THE BETTER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BUT BECAUSE OF THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT I SHOULD SAY HATEFUL AND IGNORANT STATEMENTS TOWARDS CLINTON.

I don’t know what it is with a lot of people in America, especially the news media. Whenever someone speaks the truth some Americans are offended by it, the truth has been swept under the rug long enough. Everything that was said by both clergymen was the absolute truth, and I don’t view either of them as unamerican for saying it. The truth is that America has done a lot of things that it should be ashamed of!

Jacqueline said on May 30th, 2008

This country does need unity but it must heal first. SO PLEASE PEOPLE DEAL WITH REALITY !!! The reality is that this country was build on the backs of black people and white people must first admit their wrongs and being to correct them by stoping their racist ways and help us heal as a whole and then we must move on but until this happens we can’t. We all know the statements are true by both pastors, so get over it. I am so glad people are speaking out about racist and how it has so deeply hurt the black race ! Now God is good and he is using Obama to bring us together and I believe if we want togetherness then it will be granted.

Pamela Nelson said on May 30th, 2008

The words said by Father Pfleger are just as bad as the 3 words Don Imus said and he should be fired from his job. Why is no one outraged? Why isn’t other of our publicity Reverands shouting how racist theses remarks were? Does the racial door not swing both ways? It’s a sad day when a priest can act like a comic at the pulpit.

Calm Hill said on May 30th, 2008

I like Obama, but he has to do what he has to do to secure his place. He doesn’t really want to distnace himself from the ministers buth their words are used as ammunition against his campaign. The things that the minister said was true, but Obama can’t run the campaign with smear tactics like the Clintons have been doing. He probably agrees totally with what the say for the most part but at this point, brute honesty has it’s price when everything is really about perception anyway.

If she really cared she was just back him and hope he selects her as a running mate! But seriously that’s what I think she is thinking cuz why else has she not conceded defeat esecially when its not enough delegate votes for her to get the nomination!!

eva said on May 30th, 2008

I agree with some there is no need to drag a person in the mud just to get a vote we care about our country and we hope to get the right one that is to bring peace and no more wars. As for these pastor are whatever they suppose to be they need to sit down bring some dirt out of your closets. Leave people along and do whats right for the people and America.

Generally the preachers have nothing to do with Obama, but you forget one thing, the church itself needs the limelight to survive, so that the person Obama offers the best opportunity to come into the limelight out of the stupid racial matter.

To all those who will hold Obama accountable for what these Rev. had said just keep in mind that the media and those who are running the show of politics is banking on your negative reaction to these comments. They are playing on your weakness, fairs, doubts, and ignorance. The whole purpose is to cause divisiveness among blacks, whites, and brown people. Judge Obama based on his character alone and not who he knows. Lets face it we all know people in our lives who say things that might offend someone of another race. The question is to all of you. Do we denounce and disown those people we know or do we disagree with their views but keep them as company?

Anthony said on May 31st, 2008

Everyone that i have talked to agrees with the ideas that everyone on this board is posting. I know deep down inside that both Mccain and Clinton think that they should win the presidential election. Every news station is making a big deal out of this becuase Obama is black, if Obama wasnt black this would have not been an issue. Why didnt anyone make a big deal out the lady who said on national televsion that she wouldnt vote for Obama because of his racial backgroud. Everyone wants to think that this country is changing but nothing is. Almost every white person thinks everthing should be given to them. Another thing i think that everyone is shocked because the person who said it was white.

I’m a little curious here. Now I’m Chicago born and raised and I had never heard of Obama until 2004. What did he do in Chicago to get his name in the hat besides become a senator? He sounds alot like John Kerry to me. I remember hearing say “I’d never denounce my former pastor. That would be like denouncing my Grandmother for being white. And she hated Black people.” Sounds like the man can’t decide on what route to take to me.
But never the less the brother has my vote but he’d better get his act together and think for himself and stop letting his people give him “Q” cards telling him what to say. Now i know all about Pfleger and what he’s done for us, and he’s real about his. He is proactive in fighting for the rights of people of color and while it seemed inappropriate for him to mock Hillary, we all know that she’s mad that she’s losing to a Black Man or even a bi-racial brother. The fact that it’s just not her and McCain bother’s her and if she loses (and she will), most of the Obama haters will vote for McCain and then we’ll see where the loyalty lies and America won’t know how to act when McCain wins. The Democrats have been turned every which way but right.
