Patient Dies As Hospital Staff Walks By
July 2nd, 2008The 49-year-old New Yorker was ignored for more than an hour.
A shocking in-house video shows that a psychiatric patient at a troubled New York hospital fell out of her chair and was left to die on the emergency room floor as hospital staff walked past but refused to react for almost an hour. Read the article; watch the video here; and comment.

I agree with most of the bloggers. Heads need to roll, and i’ll say they need to 1st fire all staff and security that witnessed this poor black woman die and didn’t do anything to help this lady. That doctor needs to have his license revoked immediately. Damm a suspension. I’m talking permanently and the same for the nurse. We have to send a message to the Medical Industry that you will be held accountable for the way you treat your patients regardless of race, status, etc. They better be lucky if I wasn’t in the position to make those decisions because if i was they would be dealt with swiftly and quickly.
It’s a shame but the honest truth people just don’t care anymore. I live in New York and it was sad to hear and actually see that situation. That is someone’s mother, grandmother, friend that was laying on the floor and they just did nothing. What if that was your friend or relative you wouldn’t want that to happen to them. Come on people we have to start being a little more compassionate and caring. We are all god’s children.
If nothing else, we should learn from this story that if we know someone who has gone to the hospital…take the time to check up on them. Even if it’s a neighbor that left in an ambulance that you barely know. It doesn’t hurt to be human. Especially if we know they may not have family to do so. This woman had no family in the US and nobody went to check on her either. We must be our brothers keeper. Make sure that they are getting at least the basic level of care. Animals get better care than that.
This is very disturbing and sad in so many ways. What can we do to stop this apathy?? We should not allow, in our own daily lives, people to show indifference and disregard in our presence. We can no longer sit idly by and/or turn our heads. If we go to McDonald’s (or anywhere) and the worker doesn’t look us in the eye or is rude, we should in a calm, sophisticated way call them on it. We should stop to help the person in the broken down car on the roadside.
When we raise the standards in our lives, we will raise the standards of our society.
May we all do our part to not let this woman’s tragic death be in vain.
God Bless!
I was heartbroken because, some people care about animals more than human life.We as caregivers in the medical field should show more compassion and be there to save lives not just look for a paycheck.Life is worth more than money can buy.Lord have mercy on the family of this woman and comfort them.
We all should take in account Seschris last post comment,we really need to check on family, friends,
neigbors etc. That siuation should never happen.
This really shows how the health care system works in this country and how much hospitals care about patients without health care. I personally do not have health care and by the crace of God have not needed the services of a doctor, but this truly scares me. I am glad people were fired, I hope the security officer who scooted in his seat too lazy to get up and the nurse that kicked the woman.
wow…Those Empolyees don’t have any sympathy of there patient. Whether it be Mental Hospital or regular Hospital we are all human and showed be treated like it. Those employees shouldnt have licences if they dont know how to treat patient…
GOD don’t like ugliness. They all will have to pay for what they did. If they get away with it now, later on they will have to answer to GOD for being so uncaring and showing no compassion for the sick. It’s obvious that they don’t read the Bible enough to know how GOD regards a human’s life. This person probably could have been saved if the lowndown people would have just took the time. Never asked themselves one time, “What is that was one of my relatives?”
This hospital should be closed and never be reopened. The staff should also be fired. I’m sure this has been going on for a while now. Finally it has come to the light. I don’t care if this was a mental patient or not every person should be treated with respect. I hope her family get millions for their stupidity.
This is an utter disgrace. I hope that this inexcusable case of negligiance won’t go unpunished.
The Bible is fulfiling, people will have no love for each other. Don’t the health profession have a hypocratic oath? I thought that the health profession went into that field because of the help that they can give to the sick. I guess it is all about the money. Shame Shame Shame
the staff should all b fired. And any one that can walk by and not check on her does not belong in that field. What happened to compassion?
As I watched the video , tears fell , becuase I too was in this situation where I was a patient at a emergency room in Philly and was in need of care, my daughter was telling them that I needed help and they didn’t move . It felt like death was coming but fortunately I was giving a chance to live. This other lady wasn’t so fortunate.Well, then again she’s in a better place now away from these selfish , uncaring, no respect for human life having soul suckers!
This is crazy, were suppossed to put our lives in the hands of these people and they do this??? What is the world coming to, I bet you if one of there siblings were there and that happened , please believe that i would of been ruckus going on
Now they know that they are wrong i dont care if she was mentally ill they shouldve still checked on the lady. Now i personally dont feel as if them being suspended was enough, just think do you want them doing that to one of your non mentally ill family members
It’s a very sad(another one)day in our country when you are in the hospital emergency room to get help and you don’t get it, instead the staff act as if you are invisible. It breaks my heart and i just cried when i heard/saw this. There is no suspension for these people who were on staff that day/night, they should all be fired and never allowed to ever work in another healthcare facility/hospital. People are so heartless it’s terrifying. Something must be done, there has to be something put in law that will prevent this from happening to anyone else, anywhere, ever!!!! I once sat in the emergency room for what seemed an eternity for an ovarian cyst that ruptured. I was in terrible pain, so much so that I’d gone to the ladies room and was doubled over on the bathroom floor in pain & tears. I then slowly walked to the admitting window and demanded that i be seen soon because I can’t take this pain any longer and I’ve been here long enough. No less than 10mins. later they called me in. Unfortunately, this woman wasn’t that lucky. My heart goes out to her. This should have never happened……
