Police Say They Can Learn From Their Shooting of A Woman Holding Her Baby
August 20th, 2008Lima, Ohio, chief says the community needs to assist officers.
The head of the Lima, Ohio, Police Department acknowledged that there may be some lessons to be learned in the shooting death of a Black woman while she held her baby, an incident that widened the racial rift between cops and the Black community. Chief Greg Garlock, pressed by Lima’s African-American preachers, released a statement saying that the department will review the findings of the various investigations into the practices of the S.W.A.T. team and its member, Sgt. Joe Chavalia, who killed Tarika Wilson on Jan. 4. The officer was acquitted by a jury earlier this month. “It is my intent to take the information derived from all those investigations, along with an examination of ‘best practices’ of other SWAT teams in the United States, to determine what we can do to enhance our internal practices,” Garlock said in his statement. He said that the community plays a crucial role in helping police solve crimes. Speaking for the ministers’ group, Coalition for Change, the Rev. H. Frank Taylor, described Garlock’s actions as “a good step. It’s good we have gotten such a quick response. …I believe police are here to serve and protect citizens of this community. If there is a perceived high-risk threat to apprehend a person, police move that mission to secure and apprehend. Under no circumstances do police move to a search and destroy mission,” Taylor said.

THIS WHITE MAN WENT INTO THIS BLACK WOMAN HOUSE OR SHALL I SAY BUST IN THIS BLK WOMAN HOUSE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE ELSE AND KILLED HER..GUNNED HER DOWN WHILE SHE WAS HOLDING HER BABY WHO WILL NOT ONLY BE TRAMATIZED FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE(ALONG WITH HIS SIBLINGS) BUT ALSO HANDICAPPED FROM LOSING HIS FINGER..HOW SAD..I TAKE IT THAT LIMA IS A PREDOMINATELY WHITE CITY..DONT I KNOW ABOUT THOSE..I STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM THOSE AS I CAN..HE KILLED THIS WOMAN AND GOT ACQUITTED…THIS JUST KILLS ME..WHERE IS THE JUSTICE…HAD THAT MAN BEEN BLK AND THE WOMAN WHT–OR BLK FOR THAT MATTER O U BETTER BELIEVE HE WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE FIRST THANG SMOKING WITH A CELL DOING LIFE W/OUT PAROLE..HE IS A WHITE COP IN A WHITE CITY WHO KILLED A BLK WOMAN..U KNOW THE PD DONT CARE SO I KNOW THEY WAS GONNA LET HIM GO..SOMEONE NEEDS TO PUT A STOP TO THESE CROOKED COPS KILLING OUR INNOCENT BLK PPL..MY VERY OWN COUSIN WAS KILLED BY THE OAKLAND PD IN 2003..HE WAS IN HIS BED SLEEP..THEY WOKE HIM UP HANDCUFFED HIM BROKE EVERY BONE IN HIS BODY AND SHOT HIM DEAD TALKING BOUT HE WAS TRYING TO GRAB THEIR GUNS..HE WAS HANDCUFFED..C’MON NOW..NO THOSE COPS…BASTARDS IS NOT SERVING TIME..MY AUNT NEM DID SUE AND GOT MONEY BUT NO AMOUNT OF MONEY CAN BRING MY CUZ BACK INTO OUR LIVES(RIP TERRANCE U R MISSED DEARLY)..THE POINT IS THESE WHITE COPS KILL US BLKS AND THEY GET AWAY WITH IT THE JUSTICE SYSTEM FAILS US ALL THE TIME AND THAT IS WHY BLKS DONT LOVE OR RESPECT THE POLICE…MAN I FEEL MYSELF GOING ON N ON ON THIS ONE CUS THIS REALLY HURTS ME TO MY SOUL TO KNOW THAT THESE TYPES OF THINGS GO ON EVERYDAY..I PRAY FOR THIS FAMILY AND HOPE THAT THEY GET THROUGH THIS AND JUST HAVE NO FEAR CUS GOD WILL NOT FAIL US..THIS MAN WILL HAVVE TO PAY THE ULTIMATE PRICE..HE WILL NOT BE BLESSED IN THIS LIFE…TO YALL POSTING ALL THAT OTHER BULL ON THIS YALL DISRESPECTFUL U KNOW WHATS WILL NOT BE BLESSED EITHER…YALL JUST DEAD WRONG..DEAD WRONG.

They always want to come up with a solution afterward. Two innocent lives were taking and no one is responsible. Let this be a white woman, this case would not be over and it would of been all over the news. When are we as African-American going to have real justice within our justice department?????????????

lets be realistic, just like all the other negative things that are in the streets, the police are always linked to it. this officer will not be punished. they will find a way to justify in a humble way what he has causes. the common phrase for them is that the officer did what they had to for the situation. now if it was someone from the street that did something like this ( and worse, if they were black) they would be buried under a jail and given the heaviest sentence possible. there is no such thing as fair anymore. police are not above anyone. most of them are actually on the same level as a lot of people but they have the city behind them so they are able to hide it well.
This whole story is truly amazing…it just shows that Martin Luther King & Malcolm X fought and died for nothing…and I say that meaning that America has not moved past hatred and ignorance. They must be turning over in their graves right about now. In 2008, black people have to move out of neighbourhoods and march for equality! Racism will never end because White America continues to live in denial. Denial about how they got here in the first place, Denial about what was done to the Native Indian and Denial about what was done to black people. Until they recognize that and own it, nothing will change.
