Police Say They Can Learn From Their Shooting of A Woman Holding Her Baby
August 20th, 2008Lima, Ohio, chief says the community needs to assist officers.
The head of the Lima, Ohio, Police Department acknowledged that there may be some lessons to be learned in the shooting death of a Black woman while she held her baby, an incident that widened the racial rift between cops and the Black community. Chief Greg Garlock, pressed by Lima’s African-American preachers, released a statement saying that the department will review the findings of the various investigations into the practices of the S.W.A.T. team and its member, Sgt. Joe Chavalia, who killed Tarika Wilson on Jan. 4. The officer was acquitted by a jury earlier this month. “It is my intent to take the information derived from all those investigations, along with an examination of ‘best practices’ of other SWAT teams in the United States, to determine what we can do to enhance our internal practices,” Garlock said in his statement. He said that the community plays a crucial role in helping police solve crimes. Speaking for the ministers’ group, Coalition for Change, the Rev. H. Frank Taylor, described Garlock’s actions as “a good step. It’s good we have gotten such a quick response. …I believe police are here to serve and protect citizens of this community. If there is a perceived high-risk threat to apprehend a person, police move that mission to secure and apprehend. Under no circumstances do police move to a search and destroy mission,” Taylor said.

Oh, Please, give me a break, this story hurts my heart and it also makes me very very upset. I can not understand til this day why white cops murdering innocent blacks and getting away with it. This cop shot and killed this innocent women while holding her child, plus wounding the child and NOT to add, he did all this in front of her other children, leaving all her kids motherless, have he even thought what these poor children will go through and edure for the rest of their lives. This cop could care less, but I know for a fact, if this was a WHITE women and a BLACK cop did this, JUSTICE WOULD BE SERVED. The Black cop would go to jail, NO QUESTIONS ASK. Maybe someone from this young lady’s family needs to do the same thing to his family and lets see how he would feel. I pray that her family will get JUSTICE done or they sue this cop FOR EVERYTHING HE HAS EVER WORKED FOR HIS ENTIRE LIFE: THE BASTARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RIP PEACE TARIKA WILSON

I think that this is just crazy that they found this officer not guilty. This does nothing but say to the police that they can go outside of there training and have the right to search and destroy without proper procedure of the law. This is a sad day for Lima, Ohio!! I’ve been there on several occasions where the police just come into the clubs looking for someone to do or say or act in a manner so they try and do something to you…. again this is a very sad case for Lima, Ohio. I say to all of you there just steer clear of the police… they seem to have become and have always been crooked. You who live there know this!!!

But at least the community including the police r trying to take a positive high road to deal with preventing anything like this from happening again.
White Government thinks that they are going to continue to get away with all this mess….God knows all and is definately going to hold those accountable for thier injustices…and there are plenty…the blood of innocent people has covered the earth and the end of this type of Offensive Rulings in the JUST US system will have to end in Jesus Name….amen
