Police Withdraw Charges Against Arrested Black Scholar

July 22nd, 2009

Amid claims of racism, authorities in Cambridge, Mass., have abandoned charges of disorderly conduct against Harvard University Professor Henry Louis Gates, the world-renowned African-American scholar arrested last week after trying to gain entry into his own home. Initially, police in the Boston suburb claimed that Gates, 58, who had just returned from a trip to China, displayed “loud and tumultuous behavior” against officers who showed up at his home after a neighbor called police to report that an intruder was trying to break into a home. Gates said he immediately told officers that he was merely having a hard time opening his door. On Tuesday, Cambridge Police Department issued a statement saying, “The City of Cambridge, the Cambridge Police Department, and Professor Gates acknowledge that the incident of July 16, 2009 was regrettable and unfortunate. This incident should not be viewed as one that demeans the character and reputation of Professor Gates or the character of the Cambridge Police Department,” the statement said, adding that the charges were dropped. But the statement will do little to draw back the embarrassment experienced by Gates, and the incident serves as a reminder that even a preeminent Black scholar can be manhandled based on race. “I’m outraged that this could happen to me in my own home but I’m outraged that it could happen to any individual,” Gates said in an interview with The Washington Post. He called the episode “deeply painful and traumatic,” saying he would use it as the basis for a documentary on “racial profiling.”

What makes a person whom you try to judge less of a human. We as African-American or brown beautiful skin people are just as equal as our White or Caucasian counterparts. GOD made us all and who can judge, but him. The phrase you people all the time what do you mean by that. We are just as qualified an educated as well. The overall, picture that people of other races look at is the number of incidents and negative images that are displayed in the media. One day we will succeed and not have to face prejudice and the immorality of this human life.

If arresting him was the right thing to do, why were the charges dropped? David, you need to drop the “you people” attitude and stay off of “our” websites if you can’t handle the truth and don’t have anything positive to post!

David has no life so he comes here to spew his ignorance. I am happy they dropped the charges at least.

Racial Profile and Racial Discrimination is alive and doing much better after 8 years of Bush Divisive administration. Prof. Gates, identified himself to the police as the home owner. He also provided his driver license and Harvard Uni. identification card the police officers inability to walk away and realize that the caller was wrong is what make this incident a racial profile. The caller stated 2 black men are trying to break into a house. Homeowenrs do not break into their our home.

I watched the Sotomayor confirmation hearing and it was clear the tone of the questioning and the focus on HOPE that a “latina wise woman” made this hearing different than the last 5 I have previously watched. The emphasis on trying to label her as a judge who ruled through her identity politics was offensive.

This week we continue to have people insist that our President provides his birth certificate to the general public. I am a 50 year old proud American who at the early age became intrested in politics and history. I donot recall anyone asking the same question of Bush Jr., Sr, Clinton or any previous US President. The main fact that we have political, media, and community leaders encouraging this thinking clearly demostrates that race is still a major issue in our lives today.

Prof. Gates is completely right ‘It is “deeply painful and traumatic,” that we are not equal under the law in the eyes of so many.

As a Hispanic women married to an African American I encourage all to view Anderson Cooper interview of President Obama in Africa and to view CNN’s Black in American this week.

For David. It is not disorderly conduct in your own home? I’m a former cop

This is crazy. This shows racism stills exist when we have a black president. If he wasn’t a famous professor this wouldn’t of gotten any publicity. This happens everyday in segregated neighborhoods. Check out http://www.atlgravity.com for deals on everything. Deals on Deck

The situation could have been handled better on both sides….the police responding to the call and requesting his ID was proper…if Mr. Gates responded in a “disorderly” manner from that request, then shame on him, he should have kept his kool. Because had it actually been a situation where Mr. Gates was being kept hostage or something and the Police responded in the proper way, I’m sure he’d have been grateful for them going to the extent in which they questioned him and asking for ID…something he should have considered before becoming indignant. Now would he have been questioned/IDed to that extent were he the actual caucasian assailant (from hypothetical scenario)? We’ll never know…

Racial profiling has been brought on by the Black and Latino communities. Why isn’t there a racial profiling problem against Asians? It’s because they don’t commit nearly as much crime as the aforementioned groups…PERIOD. When 50% of the jail population is represented by Blacks, there is a problem. Especially because Blacks only make up approx. 20% of the overall US population. And before you go on the ‘they were wrongly convicted’ rant, realize that if the police/courts got the wrong Black man/woman, it MOST LIKELY was another Black man/woman that did the crime since many of the offenses were in inner city areas. IT IS NOT THE MEDIA’S FAULT THAT THERE IS SO MUCH NEGATIVITY IN REGARDS TO THE BLACK COMMUNITY. OWN UP TO IT!! It’s like saying the photographer is terrible when you actually have an ugly face.
Secondly, our President’s mother is White, and he was raised by his White grandmother. Don’t forget this when talking about race, and the Presidency.
Thirdly, we don’t know the whole story here. One side said that he was acting disorderly. He should have been happy that the popo was responding to an apparent break in.
Finally (@ Arthur), not everyone believes in God. Personally, i believe that religion was created by man (Bible was), and was forced upon others through violence. Different groups/races believe in different Gods…there can only be one, correct? So, someone is wrong, or they all are. The earth was born 400+ billion years ago, and evolution is fact. All evidence against a God. Oh, and there were dinosaurs on this planet hundreds of millions of years ago…something that the man written Bible conveniently left out. They left it out b/c they didn’t know they existed. Wouldn’t God have mentioned them often???? They would have been created by him, no??

David (”you people”), you certainly are an idiot , and UMlaw, thanks for the history lesson that had virtually nothing to do with the subject. God is who or what you perceive him/her/it to be (case close). You are equally as idiotic as David (now, you own up to that)! Racial profiling is nasty business that’s been going on since slavery, and is still alive and kicking. Professor Gates was indeed violated by such discrimination. He had a right to be offended, standing in front of his home being man-handled. This goes on everyday in every state in the union (not just the south). And until police profiling (an abomination) is addressed in its entirety, it will continue to happen.

I thank GOD that Mr Henry Lewis Gates has finally seen the error of his negro views. I believe that this dastardly act of racial profiling both by his alleged neighbour and the half witted cop that answered the call was GOD’s way of letting him know that what he said some time a few weeks ago about the releveance of “affirative action”, the NAACP and other organizations like that that keep a vigilant eye on Racist AmeriKKKa and her institutions. Thank You GOD for making the devil vistit Brother Gates in the fashion that they did, and thank you God for his even more racist neighbour for getting the ball rolling they way that this alleged neighbour of his did. He needs to know who his real neighbour is, and who his real people are in AmeriKKKa. He needed to restructure his conservative “sell out” view/criticism of our soldiers in the field of battle, and see how he can better work with them. He needs to spit in his so called neighbour’s face for not interveneing to confirm his identity to the cops when they started to arrest him. but he/she is a devil and was doing what devils do. NOw Maybe Henry will become a real hero to the Black Community.

If a cop comes to you and wants to know if you are the owner of a home, that you are trying to get into in a unorthodox fashion, all you need to do is let him see your pictures on the wall of you and your family, but if you go to racist Police school, they probably teach that burgulars (especially Black ones) bring their own photographs for just such occasions, so the cops of the 21st century shgould not be fooled by this ploy……..You really do need to be a dumb ass to be a constant racist.

David before you post anything else you need to check your grammar. It’s identify himself. And stop using you people. That is racist in it self. And the professor gave proof that that was his house. It was racist. Read the facts. Even the president made a comment on that incident. African Amer. and Latinos do get pulled over more so than most others.

Listen people , If the the police officer was trained or giving training in RACIAL PROFILING then he should have handle the situation better. He just did not want to walk away thinking that “one got away on his watch” There is no law for rising you voice at someone espcially when you feel you have been violated.
