Politics: Bush Says He Was a Good Civil Rights President; Some Black Lawmakers Unhappy With Obama’s Cabinet Picks
December 23rd, 2008

Bush says he was a good civil rights president. President Bush says America shouldn’t forget about his contributions to civil rights. While acknowledging that Sen. Barack Obama’s election portends a “very hopeful moment for race relations,” the president pointed to such programs as No Child Left Behind education law, which he called “a piece of civil rights legislation” and his push to overhaul Social Security, saying it was aimed at giving Blacks a greater stake in the nation’s future. Read what else he had to say here.
Some Black lawmakers are unhappy with Obama’s cabinet picks. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus have not publicly expressed it but The Hill.com is reporting that some Black lawmakers are disappointed with President-elect Obama’s picks for his cabinet and the way he went about it. “People I’ve talked to have expressed that they were hoping to have seen a few more African-Americans in place, and in places where you can pinpoint needs,” Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill) said. He pointed to a notable absence of Black nominations to positions that specifically deal with policy on urban problems like education, housing, labor and improvement of cities. Another aide, speaking anonymously, said CBC members are not questioning the qualifications of Obama’s nominees but they expected two things: “a better consultation and communication process and, at the end of the day, more blacks in the Cabinet,” reports the Hill.com. Only one member of the CBC, Chairwoman Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), has released a statement commending Obama on his nominations. She praised the President-elect for picking Steven Chu, an Asian American, to head the Energy Department. So far, Obama has selected four African Americans to his cabinet.

Danan… I’m like you WHAT EVER because hes now our president and who ever he picked is fine with me…dont just pick people because he or she is BLACK. Mr Pesident picked who he think is quaified for the job, and color was not on the list. LOOK BUSH PICKED ALOT OF BLACKS FOR HIS CABINET AND GUESS WHAT HAPPENED. THE ONES WHO HAD MORE SENCE LEFT OFFICE BECAUSE SOMEOF THE BLACKS DIDNT WANT TO BE APART OF HIS LIES.
Guys we need to ease into this not bombard the world with our newfound ‘power”. Also its a known fact that Obama worked with a lot of whites in his campaigning simply because u cant win without them. He has to be smart and pick the best. Imagine if the entire cabinet was black and somthin went wrong u kno what they’d say about us. And he is just a man who happens to be black he’s not the saviour of the black ppl, okay! He’s not here to liberate black mankind, that’s our job to liberate ourselves!
BLACK LAWMAKER WAKEUPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS IS A NEW WORLD STOP TALKING RACISE
It is funny how the same Congressional Black Coons in office didnt think Obama was qualified and supported Hilary is now making demands on Obama.Bush and Clinton with the exception of Ron Brown, and Colin Powell chose yes men and Black flunkies.I believe if you look at Obama’s agenda for Urban America real improvements are finally going to happen in Black America. Not just some jobs for a few Black pompus cronies
WHEN YOU BECOME A SERVANT OF ..’SATAN”..OF COURSE YOU ARE BOUND TO PROVIDE THE BEST OF CIVIL RIGHTS TO HIS COMMUNITY!!.I AGREE WITH..” MR BUSH ONE HUNDRED PERCENT”!!!!!.
You people will never be happy with anything anybody does for you. You will always have that “gimme dat” attitude.
Lola:
I had to laugh at your ignorant comment: “You people (of course I knew what you meant by ‘YOU PEOPLE”) will never be happy with anything anone does for you. You will always have that ‘gimme dat’ attitude’….hmmm…time for you ‘catch a fire’ in your @ss from the west coast: First of all, YOU PEOPLE have the ENTITLEMENT attitude; thinking its your BIRTHRIGHT to treat those of a different skin hue than you like dite; your people have done that to ours and others for centuries and STILL continue to do it..as far as a ‘gimme dat’ attitude…my people were brought to this country unwillingly, treated worse than animals, beaten, lynched, families torn apart by slavery and sold for profit yet we remained strong enough to survive and contribute to your people’s comfort (the luxury of which we never had)…as far as ‘anyone doing anything for us’…hmmm..if you count stealing us from where we originated and enslaving us, raping our women, giving us diseases selling our children and killing our men as your people have done for time eternal – if that is what you call ‘doing something for us’ you are indeed a twisted chicken. I have never and don’t need you to do ANYTHING for me. Please.
PS. Line six of my comment – I meant to type ‘dirt’…
I do care what the brother do in office, nobody is going to see eye to eye on anything around here. We just got somebody in office an i Think the brother is going do this an he going to that, Stop. Think of the time we wasn’t there at all an now we are there. All we can here is the brother isn’t looking out for us. We must get it right an think ,we are United States an look around smell the air an look around you an think. In the U.S. Army they always said to hurry up an wait. The speculation will not accommodate everybody, but we got to move on. Let’s show Love an appreciation for life around here. Proverbs 12:15 an if you take the time to read the words. God Bless an long LIFE an LOVE, Peace….
Lola I couldn’t agree more except should we really call them people they aren’t human, but then again on this forum I guess that they think they are, but we all know they aren’t
You people scream diversity but when comes to diversity ? you people don’t want it because ” diversity ” for you people means black only . And read the U S census about the U S population statistics for the future about all the minorities which are going to be greater in number . Learn it and live with it . you are not the only minority.
OK IF BUSH IS SO GOOD. WHY NOT LET THE UNITED STATE POSTAL SERVICES HAVE JANUARY 20, 2008 OFF
STUPID..” RED NECK BOY DAVID”..DIVERSITY IS SELLING FAT WHITE BABBIES !!..AND HAVING THEM GROW UP TO BE BLOGING ON B.E.T..YOUR ON HERE RIGHT!!
lola you right, until your mammy and grandmammy give me my 40 acres and my mule it will always be drama, now how bout that one
Lola, No one has EVER given us shyt! Anything we got we fought hard for, had to be twice as better as “you people” & still got passed up. So you need to keep that igorant azz comment to yourself. ‘You people” always had it easy, barely worked for anything so shut the fukk up. As for Obama’s picks, it’s up to him. I don’t care how biracial they are as long as they get the job done. Bush may have appointed more blacks but they didn’t do anything but destroyed the country. That should tell y’all that appointing more blacks is not always the answer so get over it. Let the man do him. Besides he can never fukk up as much as Bush did but “you people” elected him twice!
I don’t know how much Bush was on civil rights but I don’t think he did anything harm it. However, thank god he wasn’t able to do what he wanted to do to social security considering how the economy tanked. I don’t personally think he was looking out for blacks with that because he knew if he had priviatized it like he wanted, they might have been many black who would have used that money to make ends meet instead of investing in their own retirements. He just saw it as a way to get the government out of providing social security.
As far as Obama is concerned, he was smart enough to select the right people to help him get elected so I’m assuming he is smart enough to keep selecting the right people for the jobs. He is appointing people from various ethnics groups as well as a number of women. As long as they can do the job, more power to him. We can’t keep hollering racism for every little thing.
I have absolutely no respect for George Bush and I will literally dance the day that his lil azz leaves the White House. How can one man mess up EVERYTHING in just 8 years? Anyway, President elect Obama is in charge and I respect his judgment and his administrative choices. I want a cabinet that is diverse, strong, highly intelligent, effective and public service minded. I want a diverse cabinet not a black coalition. The US isn’t ALL black so why should President elect Obama’s cabinet be?
I believe President Obama’s thinking is that if anything goes wrong, the fall-out will be contained within his back yard and not Black America’s. If you recall, most of the CBC were Hillary supporters and we needn’t be reminded of Jesse Jacksons Sr.’s sentiments. The CBC hasn’t done anything note-worthy since the passing of the Civil Rights Act. Just look at the state of Black America and tell me different.
So who cares what Bush did or think(spititout1@yahoo.com)Essie Rerun Berry
