Politics: Calif. Has First Black Assembly Speaker; Obama Issues ‘Sweet’ Apology

May 15th, 2008

Calif. has its first Black Assembly speaker
Democrat Karen Bass has become the first African karen_bass_california_assemblywoman.jpgAmerican woman to lead the California Assembly since it was created in 1849. “California is a giant in crisis — and now it is up to us to solve that crisis,” said Bass, 54. “It is up to us to take the fear out of California’s future.” Her predecessor, Fabian Nunez, is required to abandon the post after two consecutive terms. Bass, the state’s 67th Assembly speaker, said that her priority would be repairing the state’s budget. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has released his revised spending plan for the next fiscal year that features a deficit that could reach $20 billion. “We have to decide how we will come together to mobilize the incredible assets and resources at this state’s command to solve the budget crisis,” Bass said. “Members, we have to respond to the current economic crisis the same way we would a natural disaster. We have to toss aside the boxes we put ourselves in and the labels we place on others and come together to get the job done. “I believe part of that job has got to involve looking at the big picture and really examining California’s overall economic structure. Most importantly, we have to ask the question of whether a tax structure that was established in the 1930s is sufficient to meet the needs of Californians in 2008. …”

Obama issues a “sweet” apology
Sen. Barack Obama, after getting spanked in the press for calling a woman TV reporter “sweetie,” apologized on her voice mail. During a campaign stop in Michigan, WXYZ reporter Peggy Agar asked Obama, “How are you going to help the American auto workers?” Responded Obama, “Hold on, sweetie” and told her that he would get back to her later on the question. Agar told CNN that Obama never did give her an answer. On Wednesday, Obama called Agar personally to apologize. He got her voice mail. “That’s a bad habit of mine,” Obama said in the message. “I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front.  “Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next,” he added. It’s not the first time his lips slipped out “sweetie.” He called a factory worker “sweetie” during a campaign stop in Pennsylvania.

WTF…. I am tired of all this little stuff if they(media) could stick to the issues like our unemployment rate poor schooling systems and our homes in MI. Sweetie… really this is news? Barack and Edwards 08′?…

Shay Said on

obama 08!

MM Said on

OK LOL:-) He can call me sweetie anytime!

cherry2000 Said on

That is the LEAST of our problems: Being ccalled sweetie?? We need to stop being so politically correct- NOW there are ways that can sound condesending, but Sen Obama isn’t the type of man who would disrespect women. Look how he treats the women in his family. I wouldn’t have a problem with him calling me sweetie!!!! Find something else to pick at, like the fact that McCain ditched his first wife for a prettier one, or how Bush has ran this country into the ground.

Joy B./PA Said on

I am sure Barack probably calls his girls and his wife that all the time and that is why he slips up and does it on the campaign trail, but was it absolutely necessary to make it into a news story? H*11 No! I just wish the media would get a life and quit trying to dig up the smallest grains of dirt you can just to get something started. Why don’t they try broadcasting on the issues that matter not only to black people, but to all people. Money, jobs, housing, inflation, gasoline etc. I could go on forever.

TCurry Said on

I don’t see what the big deal is, as usual. I know she has been called much worse in her life time.

phillysnewaddition Said on

AAW HEEEELL TO THE NAW– STOP THE RACE! STOP THE RACE!
IT’S ALL OVER, DONE DEAL… OBAMA IS OFFICIALLY INCAPABLE OF BECOMING PRESIDENT FOR CALLING SOMEONE “SWEETIE”. Give me a break people. Isn’t there something important going on in the campaign?

OBAMA ‘08

HD Said on

Phillysnewaddition its a term of endearment “Sweetie”. He could have went Imus and that would be a problem. That girl what does starving in Michigan have to do with Obama calling a girl sweetie. Give the man a chance he will make a CHANGE. YES WE CAN. Obama 08. Black Man running and it’s not from the police

Tom Said on

Hey Baby so many people have said that to me and what’s up Boo? So many people have said what’s up brother, Hey man!

dahchic Said on

being called sweetie is one tem that is not offensive. She couldv’e been called a lot worse. To make ignorant comments as if his choice of words has anything to do with the abiity to run a country (that girl) is ridiculous. If you are starving in MI, then a term should be your last point of focus. To have a blog on this issue or have to issue an apology for that term is a waste of time. Of all the issues in America, this doesn’t rank.
There are a lot worse things you could be called phillsnewaddition, so be content with the respect given when sweetie is used.

justbeingme Said on

Sometimes I call people’s sweetie. What wrong with that find something else to ride his back,Give this man a break. There are other things thats more important like the war that’s killing soliders………

jfffnn Said on

I never knew calling someone sweetie is offensive.I would see it offensive if he called her the B-word.
By the way what year does the poster want McCain too be President ?

Mikki Said on

If calling someone “Sweetie” is the worst offense he is capabale of commiting I think we can all live with that. Just stick to the issues, which is what he has done through out this entire campaign. He can call me”Sweetie” anytime!!! Go Barack, or should Mr. President!

Lynette Said on

I’m with everyone else….when did being called “sweetie” become offensive… He definitely can call me sweetie anytime

skipper Said on

Everybody Black calls each other either “sweetie or darling”.
She’s probably upset that he didn’t call her “mam”.
