POLITICS: Clyburn: Bill Opposition is Slap at Black Folks

February 20th, 2009

James Clyburn

Rep. James Clyburn, the highest-ranking African-American congressman, said Thursday that southern GOP governors’ opposition to the federal stimulus package by is “a slap in the face of African-Americans.” Many of the states whose governors are promising to boycott the Sean money. On Wednesday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said he would accept the money, and none of the others has rejected it outright. The Republican governors of Idaho and Alaska also said they had reservations about whether the money would come with too many strings attached, but Clyburn said he was particularly taken aback by southern governors who said they might decline it. “These four governors represent states that are in the proverbial Black Belt,” Clyburn said. South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford accused Clyburn of playing the race card. “Spending money at the federal level that we do not have represents a future tax increase on all South Carolinians, regardless of their color,” Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer said in an e-mail statement. “And in the process of doing so, he’s ripping off everyone he claims to represent.” Sanford had said earlier that being against the stimulus plan doesn’t preclude taking the money. He said he opposed President Barack Obama’s economic plan because it’s “a bad idea,” but would look over it and decide whether some parts would work for South Carolina.

I don’t understand how South Carolina has a republican governor with a lot of African-American people that lives there. I hope this is a wakeup call to the people for the states who want to reject the stimulus bill that it is very important for them to get involved in the political process and vote for those politicians that have your best interest in mind and not just theirs. If you are not a register voter you need to register and vote. The stimulus bill will not only help blacks but all races of people.

Where were these Gov. when the Bush admin was spending 160 Billion of unaccounted for funds? Plus they know that they can hold this repugnant news conferences because they know that there is a clause in the acceptance of money by others in their government. These are the same game playing idiots that will never change. Note that none of them have alternatives to helping out their states. Alaska, Please! She had better be figuring out how she’s going to pay her own government back that 17,000 that she has cheated them out of with her news shows to promote herself as the next President with her backward self. These clowns are a joke that should go away. I hope their people are listening and hold them accountable at election time

It’s really sad the day has come where politicians are taking such matters into their own hands. These actions are based on personal feelings and beliefs and not in the interest of upholding their oath of office. They promised to represent the body of people in their states. Poor showmanship of representation!

JUST FOR SPITE, ALL STATES SHOULD REFUSE THE MONEY NOW, BECAUSE JAMES CLYBURN HAS JUST PUT ANOTHER SLAP TO ALL OTHER RACES.

More racism from an elected official. Why does everthing always have to come down to race? The white people in Clyburn’s district must feel like “The Invisible Man”. Clearly, their interests are not being represented. And, no, Diane, the stimulus bill will only hurt everyone, most especially the poor and minorities. Most serious economists have already weighed in on this, and it’s a huge (and very dangerous) gamble with several generations of taxpayer funds. The largest fiscal bill in the history of the world, and only a small handful of people even bothered to read it. Must make this country look pretty damned stupid in the eyes of the world. There wasn’t even a hearing held on it. Shameful. Just shameful.

It seems to me that playing the race card is just the same game he plays all the time. Making race an issue is absurd. Unless the bill is targeted for African Americans, and it might be, the lack of stimulus hurts the whole state. Clyburn shows exactly how racist he is or he know something we do not.

A state that does not accept federal stimulus money is racist? Really?

Stop playing the victim Rep. Clyburn, stop trying to convince Americans that they can not make it without the government.

Spreading the wealth around is good for everybody.

to Khrish and Diane you both are so right, its like when Bush was in office no one cared or even looked at what he was doing, it was like what ever he do or say is good and all the lies he told now we have a great President and now we have the rep… with all these question, they are full of ~~?#.

fefe Said on

Now all of a sudden race is taboo, i don’t think so we need to address this situation, because if we don’t we will forever be haunted by our pass. And you white people need to stop trying to sweep race under the rug.

Lets get rid of the Govn. they didnt take this stand when bush was in office so we know that their intentions are not good for the state that they govern they are showing their ugly heads—-since they are not willing to back our president make them step down so that we can get a more open minded Minority in his spot——-South Carolina lets stand together and other states

David—I know that it is hard to be you—you are like a transexual —as far as feeling like they are not in the right body—you are fighting yourself bc you want to be black so bad—you believe that your comments effect us they dont we just see that you want to be us—you are on our sights more than we are—learn as much as you can David—we laugh at your type—bc we know that you are a coward you would never say any of this to a black person!

fefe Said on

To all the non AA’s americans,” WE HAVE ARRIVED”, racism is not going away if it wasn’t for the beginning of slavery we would’nt be in this mess. And the conversation is only going to get deeper you will have to bow down.

I’d love to be a fly on the wall when David slips and says some of his ignorant racist BS to a black person. Rejecting money that will help your constituents is dereliction of duty and grounds for impeachment (or at least loosing the next election). That Palin publicity whore needs to be concerned with the extreme poverty that a portion of her state is living in because rather than hire someone to oversee that portion of the states (where the funds were slated to be spent) to help them she decided to use the money to hire some public relations fool to clean up her tarnished image. If Alaskan’s are hoodwinked into re-electing this country bumpkin shrew to run their state when she can’t even run her own household properly they deserve what they get. I thought her daughter was getting married so fast to that redneck baby daddy. Palin was and is still lying about that situation too.
