I HAVE TO SAY THIS AND SOME WILL TAKE IT THE WRONG WAY!!.”WHITE TEACHERS HAVE LITTLE OR NO EXPERIENCE”…WHEN IT COMES TO DEALING WITH CHILDREN OF COLOR..’ THEY GET FRUSTRATED”..AND GIVE UP TO EASY THE ONLY OPTION THEY HAVE IS TO WRITE UP THE CHILD OVER AND OVER AGAIN.. LEAVING A PAPER TRAIL LABELLING THE CHILD AS A TROUBLE MAKER”..ONCE THIS IS ESTABLISHED THE WORD IS SPEAD TO THE OTHER TEACHERS AND THE CHILD IS VIEWED AS A WASTE OF TIME.

Mr. Duncan has help Chicago Public School System out a lot. This man is all about the education of our children. He prepare grade school student for high schools. When in high school some students are taking college classes. I know President Obama has made a excellent choice. Mr. Duncan will be missed.

I too feel that white teachers (however well educated and concerned) do not always share the necessary nurturing quality of an African American teacher. This unique strength comes straight from the heart, and not a children’s psychology book. Some White teachers have their idea of what they presume to be “normal”for every child and will easily label an African American child as a problem and/or suggest medication for ADD, ADHD,etc. when they behave differently. I’ve watched it happen to many, including my son and a friend’s daughter. As soon as they went to the next grade (where there was an African American teacher) they got what they needed and acquired self-love; instilled in them by that special teacher who they felt “treated them like their own” and the reason why they say they presently attend college.

I’m sure that I’m stepping on some toes here BUT wasn’t there a story on this blog a few months back about how the Chicago Public Schools were in such terrible shape or something to that effect? That being the case how is this a good choice?

I agree with you. A non-black teacher that does not comprehend and accommodate; to a certain extent the unique requirements of SOME of our black children is not going to be of service to those children rather a hindrance and a detriment to them academically and possibly mentally. Those kids often get labeled as a disciplinary problem; ADHD or in need of special education. Not all but some black teachers are more aware of those special circumstances and can seek beyond the surface to get to the real problem. Unfortunately because of the demands on ALL teachers of elementary, middle school and high school teachers with limited resources to back them up in these non-teaching duties; those students get left by the way side and some end up dropping out, pregnant , in jail, drug dealers, etc…

In addiiton to lack of money, let us not forget that some kids are just bad, some parents are bad, some teachers are just bad and some school boards are bad!
