Radio Hosts Call For Anti-racism ‘Blackout’
October 31st, 2007They say that Black folks can show their power by refusing to buy anything on Friday
Could African Americans put a dent in racism by agreeing not to spend a single nickel on the same day of the week? A group of Black radio talk-show hosts believe that Black folks – with an estimated purchasing power near $1 trillion – could force the U.S. government
to take a more aggressive stand against the seeming deluge of racial injustices, from the flurry of nooses and hurry to jail Black youths, to racial profiling and predatory mortgage lenders. Raleigh, N.C., Attorney and radio show host Warren Ballentine says that if African Americans keep their money in their pockets on Friday, they will send a clear message that the Black community is nothing to mess with. He says he got the idea after joining numerous protest marches this year. “After Jena, [the Louisiana march that drew tens of thousands of people] I decided there’s so many things going on in this country as far as [injustices within] the justice system,” Ballentine, who calls himself “The People’s Attorney,” told The Atlanta Journal Constitution. Among other radio personalities who have joined his crusade are Michael Baisden and the Rev. Al Sharpton. “I’m a lawyer and I’m seeing a lot of people across the board suffer from the mortgage crisis,” he said. “I’m asking all Americans to participate, not just blacks. I’m asking people — if you can — don’t spend any money.” With more than 36 million Blacks in the United States, Ballentine says an anti-racism economic boycott can be powerful. “It’s showing togetherness and unity, and it’s one thing we haven’t shown the federal government in a long time,” Ballentine said. “I know this is working because I’m getting death threats and advertisers are starting to worry that they’re going to lose money on this day.” Do you think this is a good idea? Will you participate in the economic boycott on Nov. 2?

Yes – I’m 10 toes in.
I’ve been searching for some black leadership in this country for some time now. I’ve been writing a book about my father who is the first black to receive a scholarship to play major college sports in the whole, then segregated, south (1962) – the first at his university and the highest NFL draft choice in the schools history as well, but he’s not in the school’s Hall of Fame – which is nothing compared to the pattern of horrific/terroristic treatment towards my entire family in that schools state, my fam’s home state, for decades (ever since my father quit football in 1968). I can’t seem to get much help with this book. But this only illustrates to me just how powerful this story is. My family has gone through hell and America, especially Black America needs to see what happened to us. Ya’ll ain’t going to believe all of this. I ain’t giving up just yet – but take it from a black man who has been contacting some of Black America’s most renown so called leaders for help for years now about an important black issue with little or no response – WE BETTER START DOING SOMETHING/ANYTHING TOGETHER, AND RIGHT NOW !
and umm sfirx, if you can’t say something worthy of being read, do us all a favor and hush ..QQn around for Queensden..see I was nice my sista lmao…thanks
H-town you have lost your mind child. Please have a seat before Queensden has to come back to me and slap me on the wrists again. I’m trying so hard not to cuss. I placed msyelf on a cuss diet and said that I wouldn’t do it today. But child your comments have my cussing finger engaged. Child SIT DOWN PLEASE.
To Baby: Not all White People are against us. “Paleface” admits that she is in the movement with us. She was venting at EveningStar for his comments, which was on target.
Even Dr. Martin Luther King had white people who was in his corner. Remember those in office who were white that helped us, such as Lyndon B. Johnson and President John F. Kennedy. This is how we got the Civil Rights Act of 1964. So not all whites are bad. I am glad that a white person could come to our site “BET” (BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION) and can sit on our sofa and watch our TV with us and agree: Here is what “Paleface” said:
“I’ll start off by saying that I think the impact you’re supporting with this, “Blackout” as you call it, is a great idea and is exactly the kind of innovation that this country needs. However, I do agree with Lee when she said that a single, solitary day of NOT spending money shouldn’t really wound the economy that much. Instead, a longer period of boycotting OR buying African American merchandise only might cause more damage to society. [and yes, it does seem that you are attempting to cause damage to society.] …When you say “mah brotha’s and sista’s” I believe you are forgetting that I, too, am you’re sister..…I still have love for every human being on this earth, and that includes you. Please, realize that we’re not all out to get you, and some of us, like Lee and myself, support the movement that you are trying to launch.”
The whole point of the blackout is to get their attention….. Seems like we have begun to do that!
Bro Jay, I almost took a switch her butt.
I swear these children need a good old
fashion beating.
Whew I felt fever when I read what H-town
typed. Child almost got my pressure up
talking that foolishness. Whew
Queen,
I never believe the hype. I do believe that seeing
is not always believing. That is my opinion.
I simply asked a question and I shall await
the response of “paleface” thank you very much.
As far as Lee and Evening star, I think there is some confusion on the board that needs to be rectified. Lee is a male and Evening Star is a woman, correct?…**awaits this matter to be answered by Lee and Evening Star ONLY!!** since they are the only two that knows their genders. When I’m addressing someone I would prefer them to answer, not the committee to defend board. thank you very much.
Derrick,
I’m with that.
Thank you Derrick for being intelligent to know that all whites are not against us and that we have fellow whites americans. When they see that we can agree and disagree respectfully, they will join. If we want them to finally believe in us, we have to believe in them when they say they will support us. Otherwise we are doing this in vain.
Done!
I am all for the blackout. But I feel that we should have more notice. There are many black Americans who don’t get BET on-line. There are some who don’t even get BET. If we had the Blackout on the same day as the march against racism, it seems that would make a bigger impact. We need to really get the word out until then.
If the blagkout is not sucessful today and I
pray it is,no need to worry the dialog is
now in place ,the seed of our economic
power is planted, the movment will proceed and
continue until our voice are heard.I today, call-
out all the mega church who benifits from the
people, to play your part in getting the word out.
we the people GOD put you on notice…….
Let’s boycott the use of n*****, eploiting our women in videos and movies. What good will it do to boycott to get the white’s attention, when we still have black on black gangs, black on black crime, black poverty,
What will get their attention is when they see us take a stand to what we need to do for ourselves. Not crying racism everytime a white person is involved in a conflict with a black. I know I need to do better, our black leaders need to do better and we all need to do better.
I know i may get fussed out, cussed out, called uncle Tom, but I could careless; i deal with our own from working in youth center, to working with them at ng to the old and i know that the mentality for a lot of our people is screwed!!! Yes RACISM STILL EXIST, BUT WE MUST GO ABOUT A BETTER WAY IN DEALING WITH IT.
ABSOLUTELY!
DID U EVER WONDER Y WE GET MAD WHEN WE R CALLED “N”, BUT WE FREESTYLE THE WORD ALL DAY?????
Derrick,
I’m with you but in doing better, we can not invite all kinds of company {white folks} into the house being so trusting until we first deal with self. Sometimes company get too familiar and ends up knowing too much {i.e. note the white man Dog’s conversation with son via the telephone}. You have to get your house in order first. That means that company {white folks} need not have first hand knowledge of everything. There is a saying.. “never let your right hand know what your left hand is doing”. I live by that saying.
i’ve read a lot a good comments but this boycott is the best place to start but please lets not stop here and to all the people with these great ideas and i say that as unsarcasticly as possible my question is are you presenting these same ideas to action groups in your own communities.
I agree with a lot of you. Derrick I agree with strongly. We got to do better, so white people stop sterotyping us as looser, and anything else negative they can think of. Again everyone had some great ideas, and I salute everyone for having such positive ideas!
Sounds good. But it will not be a success. Why? One example… The opening of DENZEL WASHINGTON’S move “The American Gangster”. A lot of black folks have been waiting for this movie’s release for a while.
The opening night of this movie is a critical time for the box office count.
We definately shouldn’t stop here and we need to start doing something. For those who talk about our (blacks) negative behaviors such as black on black crime, drugs, use of the “N” word and inability to unite. Yes, of course these issues need to be addressed but please understand why these things are so prevalent in our communities…it’s not by mistake. We (Black Americans) are very unique in the history of the world as we remain and live in the land of our captors, enslavors and oppressors and therefore we have some unique issues. What we need to do, again, is realize our considerable power, organize and unite and pull ourselves up. For those who think the only answer is God. Remember that God sent you and I.
I’m down with the Black Out.
