Radio Hosts Call For Anti-racism ‘Blackout’

October 31st, 2007

They say that Black folks can show their power by refusing to buy anything on Friday
Could African Americans put a dent in racism by agreeing not to spend a single nickel on the same day of the week? A group of Black radio talk-show hosts believe that Black folks – with an estimated purchasing power near $1 trillion – could force the U.S. governmentmoney to take a more aggressive stand against the seeming deluge of racial injustices, from the flurry of nooses and hurry to jail Black youths, to racial profiling and predatory mortgage lenders. Raleigh, N.C., Attorney and radio show host Warren Ballentine says that if African Americans keep their money in their pockets on Friday, they will send a clear message that the Black community is nothing to mess with. He says he got the idea after joining numerous protest marches this year. “After Jena, [the Louisiana march that drew tens of thousands of people] I decided there’s so many things going on in this country as far as [injustices within] the justice system,” Ballentine, who calls himself “The People’s Attorney,” told The Atlanta Journal Constitution. Among other radio personalities who have joined his crusade are Michael Baisden and the Rev. Al Sharpton. “I’m a lawyer and I’m seeing a lot of people across the board suffer from the mortgage crisis,” he said. “I’m asking all Americans to participate, not just blacks. I’m asking people — if you can — don’t spend any money.” With more than 36 million Blacks in the United States, Ballentine says an anti-racism economic boycott can be powerful. “It’s showing togetherness and unity, and it’s one thing we haven’t shown the federal government in a long time,” Ballentine said. “I know this is working because I’m getting death threats and advertisers are starting to worry that they’re going to lose money on this day.” Do you think this is a good idea? Will you participate in the economic boycott on Nov. 2?

Big Rich I wrote a paragraph on how the mayor of new orleans f**ked up Katrina. Sorry Big Rich Bet doesn’t want the white man spilling the beans sorry.

It is sad to see Baby grow up so quickly. Now she calls herself Mrs.Baby! Never saw an adult baby until now! It explains the comments. A baby trying to talk grown folks stuff. Keep re-reading it, it might make sense to you tomorrow.

Big Rich Thanks for the comment.

Vincent Thank you too. We as a Black People were given a means to have our own voice…”BET”. See, a white man believed in us enough to give us a voice.

Also, it is ironic that today would be the day for the Blackout when the American Gangster is coming out Today.

I would hate to spoil it for those of you who were not privileged to see the Opening, but in the first minute, Denzel without flenching, shoots point blank and kills a black man. It is about selling drugs, sex, and more killing with Denzel shooting another man in mid day and walking into a restaurant and asking “What?”. he also finds the way to sell drugs and moves the Mafia out, temporarily.

I have to say I was wrong for enjoying seeing him in this role, because this is exactly what we are standing against. I am not saying don’t see this movie, but I am promising myself to stop supporting black violent movies, I never liked rap, and will not put my money on things of violence, no matter the color. I only went because it was Denzel. I supported him as a Black Artist.

I am proud to say that I have and will not buy anything today, not even from the vending machine.

I don’t want you to get the wrong idea about me, which really does not matter, after all I am “QUEEN”, but I don’t think this Blackout is about white or black… Its about EQUALITY……

Even Martin Luther said he had a dream about White Men and Black Men working together. He stood for equality. We need to show them that there are good Blacks in America and I am one of them.

I work in a place where Credit, Banking Records are Criminal Checks MUST be clean (I can’t say where.. Top Secret), and the majority is white. I live in a neighborhood where most are white, so I know not all are black. No I am not colorblind or ignorant to the fact that not all whites are good, but I do know that not all whites are bad!

I had to mature to the fact that We are not in a White or a Black fight for who owns the biggest house, because some of them coin from me, I became mature when I learned I HAD TO DEMAND TO BE TREATED AS A PERSON, not a color.

Sure, our fight might be against the whites, but when we stand together, as we are today, and show that WE DEMAND RESPECT,,,,,,, WHILE GIVING RESPECT,,,,,, SOME THINGS HAS TO CHANGE….. WHEN THIS GENERATION AND THE UPCOMING GENERATION RETURN TO RESPECTING OUR OWN, THEN WE CAN DEMAND RESPECT OUTSIDE….. When we get educations and have an appearance that we want something out of life, then WE CAN DEMAND RESPECT….. When we tell our children or even our spouses, and friends that we don’t have to hang out on the “CORNDA” smoking crack, selling drugs, and invest in Mutual Funds, CD’s, Stocks, Beachfront Condos, Education from Universities and not just GEDs and Community Colleges, then WE CAN DEMAND RESPECT. For so long we have just accepted things.

We can do this… together… You and I, white and black…. young and old….. poor and rich.

I have learned finances from some of the best white people… This is why I can list some of the things above… Above, I was really talking about my finances that I learned from both white and black people.

No color is colorblind to change. Either you want to change or you don’t. Either way it is STILL CHANGE. Either you change the way you think, or you change from moving ahead!

AGAIN…. WE ARE MY BROTHER’S KEEPER.

I am down 4 the boycott because we as African Americans need to stand up for what we believe in and show that we are important to the economy. They must forgot that we were kings and queens back in the day and we owned them. So we need to step up and show who’s really the boss.

Queen Said on

Chasady Holmes….. Thanks… you are right. This is why I am “QUEEN”… It is a mindset.

I think this will show US that Black people are very powerful and we have money too and just not white people. And it is not fair how the colored people have higher intrest rates and it still hard for our black people to get jobs because they dont see us as being intelligent but just the color of our skin.

Sade Said on

Queen much respect!! You have it totally right. Its not about not being proud of your color because I am very proud, but God created us all equally. It is a shame that people are being judge by their color or how much they make. Lets start motivating people all race to get along. We are never going to achieve anything with hatred. I am not saying to ignore the problem but lets be productive, and break this cycle of racisim.

I agree with the blackout in concept but it makes about as much sense in the long run as the many “Three Strikes” statutes that came in during the Regan Era. Sure, it SOUNDS good but you’ll just buy those products and services tomorrow. Maybe what might work better is to WATCH programs like “Dog The Bounty Hunger” and boycott his sponsors, writing to them and letting them KNOW why you’re not buying their products anymore. Focus on a cause and endure long enough to make it matter. I’ll personally be watching for Dog’s sponsors and not buying any of their products anymore. I’ll also be sure to let them know that they’re losing my money until they lose that racist jerk. The Blackout does SOUND good but does little……however, if it makes you FEEL good….DO IT!!! By and large, it’s NOT about race, it’s about CLASS. The UltraRich do Not care about the Working Stiff until we MAKE them care by attacking their pocketbook a Dollar at a time TOGETHER as a CLASS. Peace.

Thanks Sade. Your name is Cool. You can tell a lot about a person’s history just by the name.

Although a person have absolutely no control of what your parents name you, you do have control by ….not just want you call yourself…., but also, by what name you answer to!

If your family call you a wierd name and you answer to that, then that becomes who you are. By that, I want to add…., mothers and fathers, please be careful in what you name your children. Allow today to be a sounding board about a change we all make in one thing or another. Allow today to be like a 911. A date we all remember and relate to.

You can lock your children’s future out, just by their name. They can be dressed for success, but the name will tell you where you came from and unfortunately, sometimes tell you where you are going.

We all related the name “Shanaanaa” with some girl from the hood…. not even knowing her. She has a stigma for life because of her name.

The name “Junior” has no identity for himself. When they go on an interview and are asked… “What’s your name”? Shanaanaa and Junior…

That would be another area we can change. Something so simply. The way we talk, the way we look when we go to the store…. Ask yourself…DO I look like I DEMAND RESPECT?

I am not naming names, but… we also become what we eat. If we eat unhealthy, we continue to move statistics against us. Diabetes is the number one silent killer amongst us.

Sade, Thanks for being a cool positive thinker.

Hi. I was directed to this site while searching for articles on racism. I am white and just want to wish those participating in the boycott success. I hope it makes an impact. If it doesn’t make the impact expected, you might be able to re-organize and try again. I think the idea seems pretty sound and could work.

Jennifer Said on

The “Blackout” would only be effective if we plain and simply suffered (((without))).

If we “stock-up” a few days before, filling our gas tanks and refrigerators and stock up on videos
and chnage the day we get our hair-did.

It dosn’t do a thing but shift their profits to another day.Traditionally people tend to ((BUY MORE )) when “stocking up”, as well.

When we boycotted the bus …..we didn’t ride it six times when the boycot was over. They (( FELT))
the loss of income. Plus…. not as many white folks rode the bus anyway .

The key…is to start refusing to permenently or duration sustained boycott ( without stoking-up or …making- up ).

I would dare say…it would be altogther appropriate for us to frequent and purchase from ( Black-OWNED or Minority-OWNED ) business, during said blackout.

We are approaching the high buying season….
NOW THAT…has potential to show what impact we have as consumers from an economy that dosn’t support us !!!!

Blesssssssssssssss

I HAVE BEEN YELLIN THAT FOREVER BEING THAT WE ARE BIG SPENDERS AND A BIG PART OF THE ECONOMY ACCORDING TO RECENT SUDIES. WE BUY CLOTHES, EAT OUT, AND PURCHASE SHOES MORE THAN OTHERS SO IF WE HOLD ON TO OUR DOLLARS FOR A COUPLE DAYS THAN WE CAN LET THEM KNOW THAT WE MEAN BUSINESS.

Queen Said on

Hi Jennifer:

You have a very powerful statement. Thanks. I am thankful that someone made the suggestion to Boycott today in purchasing items, which so far I have not purchased anything, but I just wanted to make a mention, again, that it is a continual mindset. Not just for today, a mindset is forever. But Girlfriend, My wonderful sister, Jennifer, we don’t want anyone to “Suffer”. We may sacrifice, but not suffer. But I like your style. Hopefully, one day, we will not have to stockpile items, but will be blessed to have stuff that we can sacrifice going without for a few days or weeks.

Hopefully, the next Blackout we have deals with MINDSET.

Jennifer is very Powerful name too. No one can guess your race by looking at the name on a resume, which is in our favor! Be Blessed!

I’m sure that a more effective idea could have been thought of than a “Black Out”. In my opinion this is a poorly thought out idea. So you chose one day not to spend your money on anything. Do you really think that this is going to make a difference. Stores will not be hurt at all because people will either do all their shopping on Nov 1st or 3rd, therefore the stores don’t lose and you haven’t changed anything.

Dee Said on

If we really want to hurt the store. I think we should have a BLACK OUT DAY on BlACK FRIDAY. I believe that that would really hit them where it hurts.
