Radio Hosts Call For Anti-racism ‘Blackout’
October 31st, 2007They say that Black folks can show their power by refusing to buy anything on Friday
Could African Americans put a dent in racism by agreeing not to spend a single nickel on the same day of the week? A group of Black radio talk-show hosts believe that Black folks – with an estimated purchasing power near $1 trillion – could force the U.S. government
to take a more aggressive stand against the seeming deluge of racial injustices, from the flurry of nooses and hurry to jail Black youths, to racial profiling and predatory mortgage lenders. Raleigh, N.C., Attorney and radio show host Warren Ballentine says that if African Americans keep their money in their pockets on Friday, they will send a clear message that the Black community is nothing to mess with. He says he got the idea after joining numerous protest marches this year. “After Jena, [the Louisiana march that drew tens of thousands of people] I decided there’s so many things going on in this country as far as [injustices within] the justice system,” Ballentine, who calls himself “The People’s Attorney,” told The Atlanta Journal Constitution. Among other radio personalities who have joined his crusade are Michael Baisden and the Rev. Al Sharpton. “I’m a lawyer and I’m seeing a lot of people across the board suffer from the mortgage crisis,” he said. “I’m asking all Americans to participate, not just blacks. I’m asking people — if you can — don’t spend any money.” With more than 36 million Blacks in the United States, Ballentine says an anti-racism economic boycott can be powerful. “It’s showing togetherness and unity, and it’s one thing we haven’t shown the federal government in a long time,” Ballentine said. “I know this is working because I’m getting death threats and advertisers are starting to worry that they’re going to lose money on this day.” Do you think this is a good idea? Will you participate in the economic boycott on Nov. 2?

CS,
Good point. I think other contributors have mentioned the same. Is the objective only to have an economic store owners on a given day, or is it to demonstrate purchasing power and thus economic power, even if the purchases are later made on another day and spending patterns haven’t changed? If it is just to hurt stores, you may be right. Boycotting buses for one day wouldn’t have made much difference either. If it is about a demonstration of power that can be built upon, however, I still think that it can be a strong statement if it has wide support.
You mentioned that you thought there is a more effective idea. Warren Ballentine has suggested a “black out.” What do you suggest that would be more effective?
this has got to be one of the most biggest cases of reversed racism i have seen in awhile. everything is “black this” and “black that” and “our people this”. we need to take a stand against injustices as a whole. we are just feeding into stereotypes and helping to make history repeat itself. why dont we just put God where he belongs in our lives and let him do his work in it as well. you want to not by the white man’s “this and that” but irregardless of those three days the money will still be there for him. its not like we are creating real “black-owned” businesses that are “keeping” the money in the community. u cant fight ignorance with more ignorance. lets line our lives up with the lord’s and all else will fall in place.
queen size panty hose,
I shall always be a Baby…don’t hate sweetie..I’m my parent’s baby, my husband’s baby and God’s baby. A slim goodie baby at that.It will be ok. Where I come from when we see the name Queen on someone we know that its a big gurl. So I shall excuse a portion of you. but as for the other portion..until yall {you and all of that extra weight} learns how to love yourself and accept yourself don’t expect anyone else to do it. Now back to your white people loving kick. You brought the fuel and I struck the match. Get over it. You and your love of white folks is not the topic here. Now I bid you {queen size}adieu ~snickering~
yes I’m a big girl and I love to eat and yes my pantihose are size 4X does it make me less of a human bean? I think not. You need to grow up baby
Eveningstar you have one big mouth for a ASU student who lives off mommie and daddy. You haven’t even left school to have a real experience in this world. I bet your hands are soft like a babys bu*t. I noticed you stopped posting so I’m going to guess your bi-polar ass is now whimpering in a corner somewhere raving about injustices that you have never witnessed yet alone lived though. Keep your flame burning you wet behind the ears little fool. Your ranting reminds me of a baby that has lost its rattle. Dance like the marionette you are when they pull your strings. You look great on the buckboard.
As a result of the boycott, I am reexamining my buying habits and will be curtailing future spending. We need to stop hoarding merchandise and start saving. I think some of our Jewish friends who own stores think we’re racist for boycotting and asked us how we would feel if they decided not to sell to black folks for one day. (Of course they’re too business-minded to do that!) They don’t understand our frustration and attempts to make a change. The one thing that I have a bigger moral problem with is my tax dollars being spent on a war that I feel is wrong, but I have no control over that spending.
My immediate family almost got away with buying nothing yesterday…my daughter went to a homecoming game and bought her ticket…one son spent $.90 on lunch, and another son bought some cookies for $2.65. My husband and I didn’t buy anything which felt good. WE DON’T NEED ANYTHING BUT FOOD AND GASOLINE ANYWAY! Our house is stuffed with unnecessary things that make us feel rich. We need to stop throwing our money away on frivolous things just because they are disguised as being “ON SALE” and start saving! American capitalists want you to buy just for the sake of it, and most things are junk or things we don’t need.
It’s time for a change.
I believe boycotting all businesses that are not owned by African Americans should be boycotted. I previously lived in an area where I only supported the Black owned businesses, even if I had to walk an extra block or more. We do not have much because we buy from businesses owned by those who hate us. Why have we continued this behavior? During the civil rights era, (not only for blacks) we stuck together. get it back! stop buying and save your money. This does not make sense. You are making your enemies rich and your communities stay poor. Wake up!
Log on to the website and locate black owned businesses – try http://www.everythingblack.com...
I cannot recall the name of the clothing designer who stitched within the inseam of the jeans “thanks “n”(word)for are making us rich”. Then, on national tv, donna karan exclaimed, “i did not design my clothers for black people. Truthfully, are u still purchasing her clothing? This is a wake up call. Black people, log onto websites and educate yourselves with racist symbols, signs, letters, series of certain numbers, businesses, etc…you will be well informed.
Pardon my grammar, I meant to write, you are making us rich, I left out the word you…
If this is is the most powerful way to try to get the respect we so rightfully deserve as people and as a human being, YES,let do this.
David, if you really thought that the boycott would have no effect, why did you waste your precious time writing against it. Just let the dummies make fools of themselves. By the way, the next time you really want to see a stupid person, look in the mirror.
