Radio Hosts Call For Anti-racism ‘Blackout’
October 31st, 2007They say that Black folks can show their power by refusing to buy anything on Friday
Could African Americans put a dent in racism by agreeing not to spend a single nickel on the same day of the week? A group of Black radio talk-show hosts believe that Black folks – with an estimated purchasing power near $1 trillion – could force the U.S. government
to take a more aggressive stand against the seeming deluge of racial injustices, from the flurry of nooses and hurry to jail Black youths, to racial profiling and predatory mortgage lenders. Raleigh, N.C., Attorney and radio show host Warren Ballentine says that if African Americans keep their money in their pockets on Friday, they will send a clear message that the Black community is nothing to mess with. He says he got the idea after joining numerous protest marches this year. “After Jena, [the Louisiana march that drew tens of thousands of people] I decided there’s so many things going on in this country as far as [injustices within] the justice system,” Ballentine, who calls himself “The People’s Attorney,” told The Atlanta Journal Constitution. Among other radio personalities who have joined his crusade are Michael Baisden and the Rev. Al Sharpton. “I’m a lawyer and I’m seeing a lot of people across the board suffer from the mortgage crisis,” he said. “I’m asking all Americans to participate, not just blacks. I’m asking people — if you can — don’t spend any money.” With more than 36 million Blacks in the United States, Ballentine says an anti-racism economic boycott can be powerful. “It’s showing togetherness and unity, and it’s one thing we haven’t shown the federal government in a long time,” Ballentine said. “I know this is working because I’m getting death threats and advertisers are starting to worry that they’re going to lose money on this day.” Do you think this is a good idea? Will you participate in the economic boycott on Nov. 2?

This all sounds like a good idea, however, what is one day of not spending any $$ really matter?
We need to come together and embrace each other
everyday, not just one-day. Totally dis-regard
WHITE folks and their madness.
We need to focus on our communities. And to the person who mentioned about us buying and selling
drugs- that part is true, however, we also need to stop killing each other over someone elses product. This feeds into the MASTER’s plan.
We need to hold all politicans accountable-
those from the local level on up. For those
candidates running for President, they have alot
of explaining to do as to why the hell we should
vote for any of their sorry asses, Barack Obama
excluded.
Yes, the time for revolution is now. Black folks
should have woken up a long time ago!!!!!!
Iam a 56 year old woman who has participated in the civil rights movement since i can remember and I will be amoung those who support this effort of unity. Let freedom ring
Bro Jay, I concur but in many of our communities there are no black business other than beauticians and barbers and they are scarce. In some communities the soulfood restaurants are owned and ran by whites. We need a serious plan for black businesses to spring up every where that they can to service our people and keep our dollar recycled back into our community. A lot of organization needs to occur.
Let’s Do This!!! I will definitely let my family and friends know about this. Let’s take a STAND, God Bless!
That’s some powerful stuff. I will participate, but if it was not for this site I would of heard nothing of this. You can tell that “they” don’t want this getting out to the mass public.
SAVE THE CHILDREN
YOU KNOW PEOPLE GOTTO DO WAT THEY GOTTA DO. I SAY EVERYONE SHOULD GO FOR IT. POEPLE GOTTA DO DIS!!!IT’Z ON!!!!!!!!!!
I support causes to uplift and empower the oppressed, but like others have said if we don’t fix the problem in our neighborhoods and ourselves first we can’t expect others to take us seriously. When we were segregated we had our black educators educating our children, we were supporting our black business, we had role models in our communities. When we became unsegregated so did alot our people who have no problem giving money and voices but they don’t come back to the neighborhoods and work with the communities, or build community center so the kids won’t hang out on the streets or they see the role models that are not on TV. An ecomonic boycott will be effective if it last til the change you expect is expected. In my opinion you will spend the money you would have on the day of the boycott either before or after. But I am glad to see the togetherness an will support the movement.
THAT WOULD BE O.K.. BUT,WE DO NEED TO SUPPORT
AMERICAN GANGSTA COMING OUT ON FRIDAY.ESPECIALLY SINCE THE BOOT-LEGGED VERSION HAS BEEN OUT FOR A MONTH.OUR BLACK ACTORS NEED OUR SUPPORT.
this is a great idea cause black folks do spend the most money on things
This all sounds so good in theory, but will it really take place? I certainly hope so, but our track record speaks for us. I hate to say it but I dont think that enough of us will actually participate in order to make a significant statement.
But just for the sake of arguement, lets say that the majority of people of color do participate. Then what? What will happen the next day and the next? This is the Christams shopping season. Money is still going to be spent and the so called “opressive culture” will still make their money and they probably wont even miss the 2 days worth of lost revenue, if any. This reminds me of the boycott that was suggested in regards to the gas prices. You know the one that called for everyone to not buy gas on a certain day. It was not going to be effective because it would have only caused most folks to fill up the day before and the day after and oil companies still would have made their money and more.
In order for us to make an economic statement, things like this have to be done on a long term basis. Someone bought up the bus boycotts back in the day. That protest worked because blacks were committed to doing it over a long period of time, not just for one or two days. The bus companies felt it in their pockets because they lost significant revenue, not just a few days worth.
Just because some of us may see different outcomes for this plan, does not make us uncle toms or give others the right to call us uneducated. It does not mean that we are satisfied with the status quo or that we dont recognize the need for change. The question is are we directing our resources and energy in the right direction. I am with “Queen” also in that we have to stop insulting each other just because we may not all agree. Having a Masters degree or higher does not mean that your opinion is more inportant than someone elses. And yes, I too have my Masters degree, but so what. It does not mean that I have more to say than someone else. I believe that one of the perks of being educated is that you learn to discuss different opinions and engage in debate without causing offense or being offended. Being educated means you are not afraid to think and express your opinions even if those opinions are not shared by the group. It means that you can hear differing opinions with an open mind. As educated people we have the responsibility to motivate people to think and see things from ALL angles, not just the ones that promote what we want to happen at the time. It also does not give us the right to be condesending to those who we feel are less educated than us. Afterall one can be educated and still be a fool.
I am also outraged at the blantant racisim that we have been subjected to in the media lately. But that does not mean that I have to agree with this plan, because I just dont see it as having the affect we need it to have.
We have to avoid the “group think” mentality. We cant just jump on a band wagon just because it is fueled by our anger and our need to do something. There is nothing wrong with looking at this thing from all angles. It does not mean you are scared to make a difference, but you have to be mature enough to hear all opinions.
I am all for a boycott, but it really needs to be something long term not short term so that a financial dent can really be made.
Also someone mentioned boycotting violence and other crimes and damage that we do to ourselves. Now THAT would really make a difference.
il do i t but im gonna want to see american gangsta to support the black actors.
YES, YES YES NOW THAT’S HITTING THEM WHERE IT HURTS IN THE POCKET AND MEAN IT DON’T APOLOGIZE, WE MEANT TO HURT YOU LIKE THEY HAVE BEEN HURTING US ALL OF OUR LIVES WITH THEIR HATE OF US AS A RACE OF PEOPLE AND I HAEN’T HEARD NO ON YET SAY I AM SORRY FOR HATING YOU, BUT I DO…SO GO FIGURE IF WE COULD HAVE THE KIND OF IMPACT FIANCIALLY WE NEED TO USE EVERY WEAPON THAT WE CAN TO SEND THE MESSAGE THAT WE ARE THE HEAD AND NOT HE TAIL WE ARE SUPERIOR NOT INFERIOR AND WE DEMAND OUR RIGHTFUL PLACE IN SOCIETY THAT THEY HAVE MONOPOLIZED FAR TOO LONG….SO IT IS TIME TO KEEP THE MARCHES GOING TO SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH AND DON’T BUY A PEECE OF BUBBLE GUM ON FRIDAY NOV.2, 2007 AND WE WILL GET THEIR ATTENTION AND THEY WILL REALIZE THE SLEEPING GIANT IS WIDE AWAKE….KUDOS TO EVERYONE INVOLVED.
I am definitely not going to spend any money 2morrow. I didn’t even know this was going on, but now that I know I am going to support it. I’m gonna do this for the Jena 6, Megan Williams, and all others who have felt racial tension in the U.S and throughout the world!
I am definitely not going to spend any money tomorrow. I didn’t even know this was going on. But now that I know, I’m going to support it. Gotta pay the rent
Will do. I’m broke anyway.
Thank you Camille43 for agreeing with me. Let me add to my statement so that it will make further sense. Some people may not understand why the one day. The one day is a beginning and a beginning and a beginning. Just like many of you rememebr Martin Luther’s Boycott. Although it was a long time ago and was more than one day and more than one issue, you remember it because it was meant TO PUT SOMETHING ON YOUR MIND! Martin knew he could not make them poor by boycotting, but he knew I could make you THINK! The boycotts may not cause financial harm, but it will cause your mind to be on the issue. This is why you remember it…. It CAUSED you to remember it. Just as you relayed the gas boycott, it too was one day… but it caused you to remember it…. Just like you remember the Jena move…. it was one day, but it caused you to remember it… They all had one thing in common…. I WENT GOT MY BIG BROTHER FOR YOU! ….ALL OF YOU!!!!!! You messed with me and I went got by Big Brother. When they messed with you as a child, and you went got your big brother, they remembered that….. Us coming together is telling them, you messed with me and here comes my BIG BROTHER! Remember, my name is Queen… Look out for my KING! I am saying to them, I am going to mess with your mind… Its not about money…. After all, most of us work in the areas where they pay our salaries. But I want to be treated equally! When we come together, we are saying: MY BIG BROTHER IS COMING FOR YOU! We are doing this not just for us, but for our children and grandchildren. The change may not take effect immediately. If Martin Luther would have just been about himself, we would not be where we are today. ARE YOU MY BIG BROTHER’S, Sista’s!? “I HAVEA DREAM… ONE DAY…..”
Hell yea…..lets do it
In order for it to be reeeeeal effective. It’s gotta be natiionwide. D**n we should’ve had this before the school season where parents had to go shopping for clothes and shoes. Foot locker and Champs would be hurtin(lol). This also should’ve been some kind of underground get together, so when the blackout goes down, big biz won’t know what him em, but folks blogged it on BET? Who’s owned by Viacom wit tons of readers from all reaces good and bad? C’mon now?
I CAN NOT BELIEVE HOW SOME PEOPLE AND YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE, ARE ACTING ON HERE AND GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH ONE ANOTHER, WE ALL ARE ENTITLED TO OUR OPINION’S AND WHETHER SOMETHING IS SPELLED INCORRECTLY ARE SOMETHING IS SAID THAT ALL DON’T AGREE WITH IS NO REASON FOR ANYONE TO TRY TO INSULT SOMEONE ELSES INTELLIGENCE, NO ONE CARE’S ABOUT THE COLLEGE OR DEGREE ANYONE HAS OBTAINED, THE BLOG IS SIMPLY ABOUT ASKING US AS BLACK’S TO STAND FOR A CAUSE, IF YOU AGREE THEN STAND, IF YOU DON’T SIT DOWN AND DON’T CRITICIZE THE NEXT PERSON, IT’S SO MUCH HATING IN THIS WORLD ITS RIDICULOUS, AND THAT MAY BE SPELLED WRONG TO BUT WHO CARE’S, THESE BLOG’S REALLY GET EVERYBODY IN A UPROAR AND IT’S NOT THAT SERIOUS!!!!!!!!!!
