Radio Hosts Call For Anti-racism ‘Blackout’
October 31st, 2007They say that Black folks can show their power by refusing to buy anything on Friday
Could African Americans put a dent in racism by agreeing not to spend a single nickel on the same day of the week? A group of Black radio talk-show hosts believe that Black folks – with an estimated purchasing power near $1 trillion – could force the U.S. government
to take a more aggressive stand against the seeming deluge of racial injustices, from the flurry of nooses and hurry to jail Black youths, to racial profiling and predatory mortgage lenders. Raleigh, N.C., Attorney and radio show host Warren Ballentine says that if African Americans keep their money in their pockets on Friday, they will send a clear message that the Black community is nothing to mess with. He says he got the idea after joining numerous protest marches this year. “After Jena, [the Louisiana march that drew tens of thousands of people] I decided there’s so many things going on in this country as far as [injustices within] the justice system,” Ballentine, who calls himself “The People’s Attorney,” told The Atlanta Journal Constitution. Among other radio personalities who have joined his crusade are Michael Baisden and the Rev. Al Sharpton. “I’m a lawyer and I’m seeing a lot of people across the board suffer from the mortgage crisis,” he said. “I’m asking all Americans to participate, not just blacks. I’m asking people — if you can — don’t spend any money.” With more than 36 million Blacks in the United States, Ballentine says an anti-racism economic boycott can be powerful. “It’s showing togetherness and unity, and it’s one thing we haven’t shown the federal government in a long time,” Ballentine said. “I know this is working because I’m getting death threats and advertisers are starting to worry that they’re going to lose money on this day.” Do you think this is a good idea? Will you participate in the economic boycott on Nov. 2?

we got to all stand up for what is right
There is racism everywhere you go. As long as people are different, there are going to be some prejudices all around the world. Alot of racism in the United States is caused by black people. Before we go out and demand respect from others, we need to learn to respect ourselves. White America is not the total blame for our short comminngs, lets look at ourselves and make ourselves better people and then confront the “enemy”. Right now the man in the white hood is not nearly as much of a threat than the person who has the same color as you that you call brother or sister who has a knife in your back.
I am for any protest to show that we (Black people) still have power and unity in America.
Let us continue on this path, let’s not let this be the only thing that we do together. We are the only race that is divided let’s come together, we can do anything together.
i feel that this whole boycott is stupid. there will be other people to buy the goods and the next day everybody is going to buy what they didn’t buy the day before.this boycott will not change anything.if we as black people want change we have to start with the children, schools, community, etc. not paying for groceries or clothes is not going to change the fact that we are one of the poorest ethnic groups in the u.s. so they want us to boycott purchasing items so that means we are boycotting black owned businesses and other minorities because we are suffering. it is no one’s fault but our own why we are suffering so instead of putting the blaim on someone else we need to put it on ourselves.
First of all, I will do my best to participate, but I agree with 50% of what Lee says. He’s not totally out there…The “black-out” my be effective, but it want change anything. It won’t change anything because white people are not the source of ALL of our aggressions. As black people, we are our own set-back.The white man might controll the big businesses, but whose accountable for our actions. Just look at the news. Everyday, one brotha dun killed another brotha, or a brotha dun broke into anotha brothas’ house(jackson, mississippi). Its sad. Lets stop blaming white people for our problems. I intend to participate, but i refuse to believe that oneday of not purchasing things will change anything. If we wanna try something that’s really effective, lets get our brothas to stop selling drugs.Let’s get them to stop killing each other.Let’s get them to stop stealing.Let’s get them to stop beating the mother of their children.(this is not to say that white men don’t do it) Lets get them to stop making children that they are not yet ready for. And if you wonder why I am totally focused on the “black man”, it’s because it’s about time for them to fill the shoes of our forefathers, but they can’t. Think about it. You didn’t hear about Martin Luther King,Jr. selling drugs. You didnt hear about Malcolm X robbing anyone. You never heard of Medgar Evers making children with sue, sandra, sally, and sarah. I mean, it’s time for our black men to step-up. I’m not saying that it’s all of them, but it’s alot of them. So i encourage the brotha that is on the straight and narrow path, to stop and help the one that took the wrong path.Let’s encourage them to get an education so that their name too, can oneday be on the side of one the “big buildings”. But the way I see it is that our biggest problem as a race is that we can’t stop our children from having children. I mean think about it.What can a child teach another child. Black people, we have our work cut ourt for us. People we can’t correct white people until we correct ourselves.
We have to start somewhere. Today’s generation has lost its focus.
I just read the comments that were posted. I think it is great that so many of you want to stand up for what you believe in but I also think it is a shame that there is there are some of you who will let the negative comments being made make you post even more negative comments. Its like there are little kids on this website going back and forth and are just waiting for the teacher to tell you to stop so you can say “he started it.” If you believe in the boycott then so be it don’t worry about what others are saying or thinking because that will only show how weak you can be.
To add on: I know some of you are angry with Lee because it seems as though he is being harsh but he’s not. He actually speaking the truth. We need to listen to some of the things he’s saying.
The only thing I say please lets keep God, in everything we do because with him all things are possible but without him we will fail!
Keep Unity A-Live!
Why dont we y’all not take shower and save some watar. If i had a job, the blackout wood cause a bad economy and i would lose my job.
I am all 4 it, lets do it.
How about we boycott the Black criminal predators in our comunity by calling the police and telling them what crimes these thugs are commiting. How about we boycott Black crime, whic is far more damaging than racism. Lets boycott Black criminal predators being allowed in our schools. The Black criminal predators and his supporters cause far more damge than that white racist.
I think this boycott is a great idea and it great to see so many people working together. I am a college student who has alerted every black person about the march. We marched for the jena 6 and we will march for anything we feel is right. Its about time we stand up: its now or never
In the world we live economics is the key, so this boycott is a great idea. I just wish there was a way to make it have a lasting effect. We should start to build an economic infastructure within our on community to make it better for all.
Not just a few elite celebrities, megachurch pastors, and pro athletes. It’s time to educate our youth and embrace them and not let others predict our future. We have to want better for all our brothers and sisters in order for us to unify. Just our as forefathers believed in our parents, we have to believe in ourselves as well as our kids. To anybody that is successful, they is atleast one person who believed in them. So we must start here if this is what it takes. Finally, we must obtain knowledge, for the word says that people perish for a lack of knowledge.
There’s strenght in unity. Unite my people for the good of our community. It can be done
Thank GOD for Mr. Ballentine!!! I knew nothing about the national black out until my sister told me, i have since told everybody I know. We can all stick together and show the world that we have the power to change things! KEEP YOUR MONEY IN YOUR POCKET TOMORROW!!
This is a great idea and it will make a difference if everyone stick together. That’s why some are posting negative comments because they don’t want us to do this. My family, friends and myself will all be in on it. Let’s do it!!!!
