I understand Rev. Jacksons point, however, the UAW is not in the business of making automobiles, the factory workers are. The UAW have been successful in doing one thing ultimately, thats kill the big three. The UAW needs to be squeezed, if not forced out all together. Now why would I say that? When a company really cares about their employees and go after quailty production, they do everything within there power to take care of their people who are creating the quailty products! And their is evidence here to support that claim within the big 3 who are paying the insurance of retired workers, and 98 percent of their salaries when production is slow or stops! These guys care about their worker or they would have never agreed to such crazy terms. You don’t need a union to be heard in this enviroment, you need a good human relations representative!

I don’t think that squeezing the Union, who represents the worker is the right way to go to save the big three. Some additional things by the Union can be conceded like for instance the job bank, but targeting the representation of the worker doesn’t seem logical workers need to be protected but retirees’ and people who used to work there should get no more than any other union worker in this country. That seem fair and make a variety of smaller and cheaper hybrid and electric cars they will be fine.

Unions serve a purpose — to protect the working rights and benefits of the employees. For the last 3 or 4 decades many jobs have been “outsourced” to other countries, i.e. call center or help desk jobs within the IT world. If there was an IT union would this have happened — probably and these people would still be out of a job. However, the auto industry was birthed in the United States and while employees have been loyal — companies have not. So unions need to be in place to help protect the workers and their families. The one thing I’ve said about those who have generations of families working in the auto industry and did not pursue education of higher learning in some other field — too bad — you put yourself in a box and now the box is about to close and you have to learn to do something else — so sad.

It is sad to see such large corporations in financial distress, I believe that the American people are not responsible for their dilemma, In my lifetime in the course of 20 years a Chevrolet truck with no additional features went from 8,000 dollars to 22,000 dollars and the quality just went away, In today’s market a vehicle cost more than a home, why do they need help?
