Ron Isley’s Tax Sentence Upheld
February 13th, 2008R&B legend won’t get out of prison early
Singer Ron Isley’s 37-month prison term for tax evasion won’t be shortened, an appeals court has ruled. A three-judge panel rejected the argument that Isley’s poor health and age made it fair for his release to be expedited. Isley suffered a stroke a few years ago, but began performing concerts afterward and was convicted in 2006 on five counts of tax evasion and one count of willful failure to file a tax return. A legendary performer since his days with the Isley Brothers, the singer had begun a reignited solo career with help from R. Kelly, who dubbed Isley “Mr. Biggs.” Isley’s imprisoned at Terre Haute, Ind., where he’s scheduled for release in 2010.

why are we discussing this we all know we have to pay taxes that is what makes our country the country it is we don’t stand in lines for food or have someone ditate our moves we have to pay taxes when you make the money these people make why would you not pay your taxes i do agree do they not have accountants or do they think someone will give them a free ride wesley should have been locked up too. stupid is waht i say. do the crime do the time berretta 76
THROUGH OUT HISTORY THE GUILTY HAVE NOT ALWAYS BEEN PUNISHED. AFRICAN AMERICAN HAVE BEEN MADE EXAMPLES OF TIME AND TIME AGAIN. QUESTION? IF YOU KNOW THAT THE PROBABILITY YOU WILL BE PUNISHED THEN WHY DO THE CRIME? YES THERE ARE LOOPHOLES IN EVERY SYSTEM BUT IF YOU CANT FIND THEM AND EXPLOIT THEM, YOU BETTER STAY ON THE RIGHT SIDE. NO ONE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO NOT PAY TAXES. DONT DO THE CRIME IF YOU DONT WANT TO DO THE TIME.
This is not the first or second time Ronald Isley has done this. He was truly warned many times. He even took money that was not his but belonged to his dead brother and still didn’t pay taxes on it. The reality is that eventually you get caught. If he had even acted like he was sorry, it may have had some impact. He is not sorry that he didn’t pay taxes all those years. He is just sorry that he got caught. I feel for him too because of his health issues, new wife and age not being on his side. But it will take an act from God to get Mr. Biggs out of prison. But you know he will be okay…anyway…and anywhere.
I am just sick reading about Ron Isley. I have been a loyal fan of him and all his brothers since the 70’s. It’s hard to believe that someone did’nt handle his $ affairs. It seems like he is taking the fall for someone else.
I hope this Super Star and American treasure can get this resolved outside of prison.
What can I say, white folks with power are at it again. There are laws for white folks and there are different laws for “black people”. How many white celebrities have gone without paying taxes and were given the opportunity to continue to work?
Ron, what did you do to the panel that made the decision to upheld your sentence? Panel members, there is no guarantee that your children and grandchildren will not face the same situation that Ron found himself. I’m not a betting person but I bet you guys will stop at nothing to call in some favors.
Oh please. I’m sorry but he should have paid his taxes and he wouldn’t be in this mess. He is not the first 60 something year old man to go to prison. And yes the man has stolen money from his dead brother and they didnt put him in prison. So he’s been warned already. You can’t break the law and then say I shouldn’t get punished because I’m old.
He will still be “Mr. Big” even upon release. This is another test or trail, but believe you me if we keep the faith and prayers for him, it won’t touch his integrity…
We still need Mr Biggs he don’t desrve to be there….
The lesson learned here is, don’t have too many hands in the fire. One doesn’t know what the other is doing. Someone slipped and didn’t pay taxes over the years, or Mr Ron Isley entrusted someone to keep up with this taxes, and they didn’t. Whatever the case may be, somebody “bhucked” up royally.
Just like I feel about Mayor Kilpatrick, “if you know someone doesn’t like you, have hate for you, why would you give them a reason to pull you down. It’s clear that something here could’ve been prevented – they can’t say: “it was beyond their control”
i myself being a Black female in her 40’s think it’s ridiculous for us to think just because of his age and illness that he deserves special treatment you do the crime you do the time now i love this mans music more than anyone else always have and always will but he is guilty ” LET HIM DO THE TIME” he knew he had to pay HIS TAXES just like every other working american hes no exception to the rule he makes excellent music but hes no exception so please Black people quit thinking we can get away with “NOT” following the laws of the land none of us have plowed any fields nor been beat by master so get over yourselves and live the good life according to the rules that apply and we won’t have to worry about the MAN as you call him coming after us later.
After all the beautiful music he’s made and after all the money he’s made and spent ! He failed to set an example of how a BLACK MAN in this Country should behave ! I think its a shame this happened to him, and I think its embarrasing to us as BLACK MEN that after all the success he’s had he still finds a way to get locked up by the MAN ! The “MAN” sets these traps for us and we know it and its up to “US” to be smart enough not to fall ! God Please Bless mr BIGGS with some wisdom ! While he’s down so that he can rise back up when he’s released !!
NOW COME ON PEOPLE!! THEY ONLY REJECTED THE APPEAL CAUSE THEY WANTED TO MAKE AN EXAMPLE OUT OF MR. ISLEY WHICH IS DOWN RIGHT PATHETIC TO ME. I FEEL LIKE THIS MAN HAS MADE A MISTAKE AND HE WILL PAY FOR HIS DEBT TO SOCIETY AND THE IRS IF HE GOES OUT THERE AND PERFORM AND THEY COLLECT SOME OF THE MONEY FROM HIS CONCERTS THAT HE PERFORMS. HE IS IN BAD HEALTH, BUT I WISH HIM IN GOOD HEALTH AND ASK GOD TO WATCH OVER HIM IN HIS TIME OF NEED.
WOW,I’M LATE. I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW HE WAS IN PRISON. BUT THE OLD SAYIN’ GOES “IF YOU CAN’T DO THE TIME, DON’T DO THE TIME” THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR HIM TO HOLD BACK ON PAYING TAXES WITH ALL THAT MONEY HE MAKES. I WORK AT MCDONALD’S AND I AM MANDATED TO PAY MINE SO WHY SHOULD HE BE EXCUSED?
ISN’T SAD HOW THEY TRY TO MAKE AN EXAMPLE OUT OF US! IT’S EVEN SADDER HOW WE LET IT HAPPEN!
I LOVE RON WITH ALL MY HEART AND I MISS HIS BEING HERE BUT MR BIG THESE ARE THE TIDE THAT BIND EVERYONE GETS AUDITED AT TIMES AND MUST ALL TAKE RESPONSIBILITY THIER ACTIONS, GIVEN CHANCES MEANS DOING BETTER. LAWS ARE WHAT WE FOLLOW IN THE USA THIS IS AN UMBRELLA AMD WE ALL HAVE TO BE UNDER IT SORRY BUD IT IS WHAT IT IS
I’m sorry but Ron asked for it because he should of had sense enough to pay his taxes like everyone else. He was so busy spending his money on a million dollar wedding on that child instead of giving it to the IRS. When you don’t do whats right it will come back to haunt you.
