Sharpton Says Chicago Blacks Should Skip School

August 14th, 2008

He calls the public school system a throwback to Jim Crow days.

Rev. Al Sharpton
Because Chicago Public Schools have done far too little to distance themselves from the separate-and-unequal school system of the Jim Crow Era, parents should keep their children away from classrooms when school convenes on Sept. 2, says the Rev. Al Sharpton, who has joined the growing boycott. “Whether it be funding and whether it be graduation rates, we are still separated and unequal,” Sharpton said, speaking to the congregation at the New Landmark Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday morning. “Well maybe if it wasn’t unfair, they [ministers] wouldn’t be talking about a boycott.” Illinois Gov. Todd Blagojevich says he’s working with lawmakers to bring about educational equity, The Chicago Sun Times reports. “I have called the legislators back into special session on Tuesday to focus specifically on school funding,” he told Channel 2 News. “But I think it’s wrong to encourage kids to miss school.”

hey boycotting is what got things done and got peoples attention back in the day in order for things to change and that’s why i understand why he is asking parents to let their kids skip school in order to gain educational growth.sometimes you do what you have to do to get things stirred up.

Having kids to skip school is not hurting anyone but the kids!! We have a hard enough time getting kids to stay in school as it is!! At the rate our children are dropping out these days, we need to have them in school as much as possible!! Al Sharpton and others need to realize that these are not the days of Jim Crow and Civil Rights. It’s a new day, with new players in the game, and new rules and they need to adjust accordingly!! Besides, some of those kids are looking for an excuse to not attend school anyway so don’t give them one!!

Nadja said on August 14th, 2008

Black kids today can’t afford to skip school. They need to go to school seven days a week and do a better job of keeping their noses clean and above all study their asses off. Black kids today have already lost out on academic opportunities to the point of being useless now and in the future. Their minds are on everything but school and they need to at least successfully get through high school. Can you rattle off the names of 10 Black kids you know who are even thinking about college? I bet not!
Black kids can dance, dress ridiculously, and screw-that’s about it. Sharpton is foolish telling them to skip school. They do that quite well without being asked to skip school. Too many are on the street anyway wasting time during the school year.

Pamela said on August 14th, 2008

Nadja:

I don’t know what black kids you have been around but the ones I know have goals, plans and can’t wait to get to college. Stop acting like when there’s a problem in the black community that it’s ALL of the black community because you know that’s just a lie! If black parents changed their focus and put it on education and raising productive citizens and took back the authority in the house those black kids you talking about might change their ways!

D said on August 14th, 2008

I agree with others here who have mentioned that asking parents to keep the kids home is counterproductive. If you want to show these people they’re wrong do it in the courtroom and leave the kids in the classroom where they can gain the most leverage BY REACHING EDUCATIONAL GOALS AND GRADUATING. It’s time good ol Rev Al rethinks his tactics. From this article I understand its probably one day, but leave the kids out of this so called boycott.

Theo said on August 14th, 2008

This is outrageous. You have a group of children who already don’t see the necessity of an education, which is why the students are graduating anyway. The graduation rate has more to do with their environment then the actual school system. Maybe if the kids did better in school they would get more funding. While I have a problem with not funding schools I feel it is outrageous for a grown, supposed Minister, to minimize the importance of school in the eyes of the young people.

Angel a,

Back in the day it was grown people doing the boycotting. They were boycotting for the rights that we have now. Yet, they’re not taking advantage of. How dare they boycott school that they don’t think is important anyway. How about Sharpton ecnouraging the youth to be serious about school and help boost the graduation rate so that the government won’t have any choice but to fund the school.

Sharpton’s emphasis should be placed on getting parents to actually act like parents and really prepare their children for school themselves. Too many kids are being routinely born into uneducated, unfit, and impoverished broken homes and it’s affecting every aspect of their lives. Some of our kids to have a chance from the begining because of their immature parents. We need to boycott unfit parenting. Truth be told, these kids are being dumped off at school with the expectation for the schools to do what the parents should be doing.

This is crazy, send those lil kids to school, we aint got time for all this black & white drama, its starting to get old. We all know about the past and how our people were slaves, well Barack gona change all this madness soon so Sharpton calm yo ass down. Our black people need there education now!!

Mmmm.. i think its better not to avoid something if its broken, skool and/or the skool system included. There are other programs that allow kids to still get a GED or High School Diploma… it realli takes the parent getting involved for students to realli enjoy alts like that. Most parents(I feel) Just use public skool as a big daykare. With that said, if the skool is kauses kids to have more problems then what it helps or fixes then yeah.. it has to be addressed. Thats not gonna happen until the public takes notise and this’ah do it. lol

Rev. Al is talking the white man’s talk. They love it when one of us tell children not to get an education. Do he have a plan B? Don’t go to the
public school but come to Rev. Al Sharpton’s school until the boycot is over.
I agree with the other bloggers, maybe Rev. Al should open a school for
these children’s parent - teach them what it is to be a Mother and/or Father.
With some education the parents would know how to make their schools better.

When is the last time you have been in a class room any where Mr. Sharpton…by having children out of school you will be creating a larger problem…it amazes me how people come up with these ideas but don?t think them all the way through…most if not all parents are both working what do you do with the children…maybe they should all go to Al?s house….there are very smart and bright young people coming out the the schools…true a lot need work and better funding but the way is not to stand in the way of education….Parents need to get more involved…curiculum needs to be updated and changed…it does need to grab the interest of the youth…teachers need better salaries and support…there are so many magnet schools cropping up take a page from what they are doing…be pro active…have a plan….we run blinding into something an do think things through…it is wonderful to be passionate about a cause…but know what you are doing and how it will effect everyone involved…

Perhaps Mr. Sharpton should have been more clear on his reasoning for stating why the children should skip school. In some states school funding is based on the number of children who are in school during the first 10 to 15 days of school. This attendance determines the amount of money the school and the school district will recieve from the federal and state government. Now once the federal governmentand/or state government give the school district the money the district determines how and where the funds will be used. It sounds as if the school district in Chicago are not making good decisions or fair decisions about spending/funding for certain schools or areas. All children have the right to a free and public education and it is important for children to be in school. But don’t be to quick to settle for any type of education just because it’s free, strive to make it equal so that our kids benefit from the same educational experiences and opportunities that children from more affluent areas are given just because. Also history has always shown that there is power in money, if you want to change society hit them in the economical pocket. I bet the school district in chicago don’t want to experience any changes in funding they just don’t want you telling them how to spend it. Sometimes you must take a stand for something cause if not you will fall for anything. So perhaps Mr. Sharpton or the media should reveal his entire thought behind skipping school, I bet its just a temporary measure to get the attention of those who need to pay attention in order to make a change

I questioned what was the reasoning for Al Sharpton to suggest that Chicago Blacks Should Skip School. So inquired through other sources. Maybe this may shed a light on the situatio n.

Meeks said he expects several thousand Chicago students to travel in a caravan of buses to New Trier Township High School in the leafy, North Shore suburb of Winnetka, where they will attempt to enroll.
State statistics indicate that the New Trier district spends around $17,000 annually on each of its students compared to the roughly $10,000 a year spent for each student in Chicago public schools.
We, as a civilized people, can’t do it this way,” Meeks said. “We’re doing irreparable harm to hundreds of thousands of kids. 221;

I understand where Rev Al is coming from when he speaks of boycotting and keeping the children home from attending the first day of school, but, I also agree that keeping the children home from school will not help either.

It is not until we as “African American” step up to the plate with “New Leadership” and new ways of confronting prejudice, discrimination, rejection, failure, disappointments, hatred, and our lack of understanding, will our children learn to take a more positive lead towards the future.

There are some many things we can blame for the lack in our Community, but it’s time for us to stop blaming and start claiming. Yes, parents haves
some blame, Yes, children have some blame, Yes, government have some blame, and Yes, Educators have some blame, but when do we stop
pointing the fingers at ____and starting pitching in to help. We as
Blacks Folks do a lot of talking and not a lot of doing. It takes one person to
step up and pursue theirr dream of starting a “Center for Kids”, it takes another to person to step up and pursue their dream of “Cleaning up your neightbor with a cleaning party.

The reason most culture don’t respect us, is because most of the time we don’t respect ourself. I’m sure so of you who have great job or education will disagree, but most of you don’t respect those who are considered poor or below poverty. Once a upon a “Blacks” were hated, because everyone was jealous of our special abilities , special talents, and special looks, but now we are most hated, but by each other. Remember this,
“IF ONE IS DOWN AND OUT, WE ALL ARE DOWN AND OUT”.

I DONT KNOCK AL SHARPTON FOR WHAT HE IS TRYING TO DO, I DO HOWEVER QUESTION THE TIMING OF THE BOYCOTT, I THINK THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE DURING THE BEGINNING OF SUMMER RECESS FOR THE KIDS NATIONWIDE AFTER GRADUATION STATISTICS WERE TAKEN AND STUDIED TO SEE THE DISPARITIES IN QUALITY EDUCATION AMONGST THE CLASSES OF PEOPLE. UNTIL PEOPLE OF ALL RACES THAT ARE UNDERPRIVILEDGED UNITE TO PROTEST AND FIGHT FOR BETTER EDUCATION FOR THE MINORITIES ENROLLED IN SCHOOLS THEY LACK PROPER ENVIROMENT AND ADEQUATE LEARNING MATERIAL AND QUALITY TEACHERS WHO CARE, THINGS WILL NEVER CHANGE. I don’t agree with Rev. Sharpton, I think the parents need to find another way to handle this issue. I know that schools in the inner city are terrible but keeping kids out of school for any period of time is not the answer. We actually need to have school on Saturday and keep them in there longer during the week as well. Blacks need to improve Math, Science, Computer and Writing skills significantly. By the time a student reaches college level courses they should have the basics&# 8230;unf ortunate ly sometimes due to the quality of the education they received…they can’t write a simple essay. I have had to refer college students to a remedial writing lab to improve upon the essay that they submitted to me for grading. A college student should know how to write a basic essay. Fortunately I only have three essays on my syllabus but unfortunately for us it’s usually my black students from inner city schools that are struggling with the basics. Please keep them in school and at least teach them the basics so that they are prepared for college level work!

To all the parents in chicago please send your childrean to school and don’t listen to this man because he doesn’t know wat he’s talking about. Instead of fixing the problem he will just be making it worse by taking these kids out of school. Before anything comes out of his mouth again he needs to think it through and not sound like such on idiot.

Parents please send your child to school and then get your neighborhood together start to attend meeting make the teachers reponsible. This is a sure way to get the ball in play. Parents/guardian got to participate in the system that is the only way to get your child a decent education. Stop making up excuses someone from that family shoud support those kids in school everyday.

simmy said on August 14th, 2008

Al might be to the left with this one but i commend him for what he’s doing. I think what all of you fail to realize is these schools get money for every child that attends. if there’s no kids there’s no money and you have to hit these crackers where it hurts. You people Fail to realize by your kids not getting proper educations that hurts them even more in the end.

Theo said on August 14th, 2008

Ok, how does this make sense.

The kids aren’t getting the funding they deserve so we’ll just tell them to stay home. So if you aren’t getting paid what you think you should make are you going to stay home until they pay you better.

The fact that the graduation rate is where it’s at means someone didn’t care. Instead of adding to the problem why doesn’t someone try to make a difference that doesn’t involve taking youth out of class. Go to the school district hearings and protest or something.

Goodness, when will our people learn.

I agree with rev i’m here in Texas. Oh lord!!!! the education system is terrinble no bodies in the seats means no money to the big wigs. The school gets money based on attendance. This affects lunches, programs and pay. Yes send them a message. Give our Black kids what they need to succeed. And yes you do have black kids that want better schools. My God a decent gym, good food, buses that run, teachers that want to teah, equipment that works. I have kids in the school system and I attend school meetings, fuctions and i volunteer. So I have seen the difference in districts. Poor schools and the wealthy schools Major difference. Yes protest and stand for something Hell !!! the mexican immigrants came out in droves and walked out of schools and jobs!!!! We count too!!! Let’s do something proactive and le’ts see some results!!! We are tired of talking and discussing let’s see some action. Oprah did a show on the school system and yes she did show Chicago!!!! What a difference in the school districts!!!!!African Americans it’s time for a change!!!!!! Our children are our future!!! Let’s do something now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

I think firing the superintendent and creating a more diverse school board would be better than the kids staying home. Right now is not a good time for Chicago to be having a lot of drama when one of the presidential candidates represents that city. Rev. Al Sharpton is soooooo yesterday. I grew up in Chicago and my parents did all they could to make sure that I did not go to school in the city and I was blessed enough to not have to go. Chicago school system in the inner city is terrible. I moved out of state just to get my kids in different schools. They are over crowded and the teachers are over worked and under paid. On several occasions my kids teacher didn’t know where he was at the end of the school day. I am a very active parent and so I have an inside look and so much of it is funding. I am glad someone is actually calling attention to it finally.

Newvagal said on August 15th, 2008

This is not the 60s.

If these people want “equal” educational opportunities for their children, all they have to do is MOVE TO A NEIGHBORHOOD THAT OFFER THE TYPE OF SCHOOLING YOU WANT FOR YOUR CHILDREN.

The marching and boycotts of the 60s were needed because children were not allowed to attend THE (better) SCHOOLS IN THEIR OWN NEIGHBORHOODS just because of race.

That’s not what we’re seeing today.

Just another publicity grabbing move by a “Race Pimp”.

Maybe if these “self appointed” black leaders would go after the root of the problems then good number of the ills in the community would probably disappear. If they went after the parents (called out mothers, not just fathers) and media outlets (like Viacom) then the coonery and buffoonery would stop.

But they do not have the balls, they do not want to upset their fan base, nor they they want to make sugar daddy “media” mad.

“Self Appointed” black leaders, aka race/religious pimps will keep doing these stunts because the rest of the black community is content to sit back and allow it to happen and they simply tell people want they want to hear (instead of offering solutions and trying them out.)

Then again, I guess it is easier to point the finger at someone else (i.e. no good black men or Uncle Charlie) then it is to actually do some reflection and root out the problem, because we all know that requires work and effort…
