Sharpton Says Chicago Blacks Should Skip School

August 14th, 2008

He calls the public school system a throwback to Jim Crow days.

Rev. Al Sharpton
Because Chicago Public Schools have done far too little to distance themselves from the separate-and-unequal school system of the Jim Crow Era, parents should keep their children away from classrooms when school convenes on Sept. 2, says the Rev. Al Sharpton, who has joined the growing boycott. “Whether it be funding and whether it be graduation rates, we are still separated and unequal,” Sharpton said, speaking to the congregation at the New Landmark Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday morning. “Well maybe if it wasn’t unfair, they [ministers] wouldn’t be talking about a boycott.” Illinois Gov. Todd Blagojevich says he’s working with lawmakers to bring about educational equity, The Chicago Sun Times reports. “I have called the legislators back into special session on Tuesday to focus specifically on school funding,” he told Channel 2 News. “But I think it’s wrong to encourage kids to miss school.”

hey boycotting is what got things done and got peoples attention back in the day in order for things to change and that’s why i understand why he is asking parents to let their kids skip school in order to gain educational growth.sometimes you do what you have to do to get things stirred up.

Having kids to skip school is not hurting anyone but the kids!! We have a hard enough time getting kids to stay in school as it is!! At the rate our children are dropping out these days, we need to have them in school as much as possible!! Al Sharpton and others need to realize that these are not the days of Jim Crow and Civil Rights. It’s a new day, with new players in the game, and new rules and they need to adjust accordingly!! Besides, some of those kids are looking for an excuse to not attend school anyway so don’t give them one!!

Black kids today can’t afford to skip school. They need to go to school seven days a week and do a better job of keeping their noses clean and above all study their asses off. Black kids today have already lost out on academic opportunities to the point of being useless now and in the future. Their minds are on everything but school and they need to at least successfully get through high school. Can you rattle off the names of 10 Black kids you know who are even thinking about college? I bet not!
Black kids can dance, dress ridiculously, and screw-that’s about it. Sharpton is foolish telling them to skip school. They do that quite well without being asked to skip school. Too many are on the street anyway wasting time during the school year.

Nadja:

I don’t know what black kids you have been around but the ones I know have goals, plans and can’t wait to get to college. Stop acting like when there’s a problem in the black community that it’s ALL of the black community because you know that’s just a lie! If black parents changed their focus and put it on education and raising productive citizens and took back the authority in the house those black kids you talking about might change their ways!
